2016 Maruti-Suzuki Alto 800
Same old hatchback under a new skin
There is no doubt in the fact that the Maruti Alto is the most popular entry level car of India and why not it carried forward the legacy of the Maruti 800 which was the only popular peoples car back then.
The Alto has been in the Indian market for a long time now and has broken many record and achieved many milestones. But recently Maruti seems to be little worried mainly because of their latest rivals the Renault KWID and the soon to be launched Datsun Redi-Go which has been gaining sales volumes mainly because of their Crossover styling and plenty of new features provided inside the cabin offered at almost the same price point.
Now for quite some time Maruti was planning to launch the updated Alto800. The car was also caught few times being tested, the reports also stated that Maruti had plans to showcase the facelift Alto at the 2016 Auto expo, but somehow that did not happen. Now that Maruti has launched the facelift variant of the Alto800 in India finally we have provided you all the information which is available at this moment about the new facelift Alto800.

This is only a mid-life facelift for the Alto so as we all expected the changes to the exterior styling are minimal. The front profile gets a restyled headlamp cluster while there is also a newly designed grille and bumper added to the front. Maruti has also left a provision for fog lamps towards the lower front profile as well. The car actually has grown in size because of the new front bumper design. The facelift Alto800 also gets both right and left side ORVM’s for the first time as well.
Apart from these changes there were no other changes made to hatchback.
|Overall length||3430 mm|
|Overall Width||1490 mm (without side molding)|
1515 mm (with side molding)
|Overall Height||1475 mm|
The noticeable changes to the interior include a completely new dark gray interior. The seats too appears to be new while surprisingly the face lift Alto800 gets a rear seat headrest integrated with it. The rest of the interiors look identical to the ones you will find in the pre-facelift hatchback including the dashboard, instrument cluster, steering wheel and the audio system. The new door trim also matches with the overall interior which leaves a premium feel inside.Maruti has also added a new bottle holder for both the front as well as the rear passengers.
Like we already mentioned earlier also the facelift the Alto800 won’t have any mechanical changes under its hood and thus it is powered by the same 796 cc F8D engine which is capable of producing about 47.65 PS of peak power at 6000 rpm and 69 Nm of torque at 3500 rpm. Although we thought that Maruti could introduce an AMT gearbox with the facelift variant this time but that is not the case, thus the engine will be paired to the same 5 speed manual gearbox.
Besides the petrol engine this entry level hatchback from Maruti is also available with a CNG variant as well.

The facelift Maruti Alto800 gets a driver side airbag only which is bit disappointing there is not even any option of a passenger side airbag as well.

The biggest competitor of the facelift Alto800 is definitely the Renault KWID, the KWID with its unique Crossover styling and plenty of features inside definitely make it stand out in the crowd. Powered by a newly developed BR-8, DOHC petrol engine which is capable of producing about 54 Ps of peak power at 5678 rpm and 72 Nm of torque at 4, 386 rpm. The engine is paired to a 5 speed manual transmission.
The newest entrant to the entry level hatchback market is the Datsun Redi-Go which will be launched in first week of June here in India. The Datsun Redi-Go uses the same KWID 800 cc drivetrain which produces about 800 cc unit produces about 54 Ps of peak power and 74 Nm of torque under the hood. The engine is paired to a 5 speed manual gearbox. The car will be priced aggressively and definitely will be counted as one of the top contenders of this segment.
The Alto 800 facelift has not received any major changes it still remains to be powered by the three-cylinder F8 petrol unit, unfortunately if you want an AMT variant you still have to spend all that extra money and go for the bigger and more powerful Alto K10. Just like the exterior the changes to the interior are also minimalist and because there are no changes to its mechanical ’s the facelift Alto800 basically is the same car under the new skin.
