Updated 2017 Maruti Wagon-R Variant Spotted Undisguised
Only yesterday we have reported that Maruti is planning to introduce the updated 2017 variant of their popular hatchback Wagon-R in India. The 2017 model will be based on the same generation hatchback which is sold currently in the Indian market and not exactly the new generation Suzuki Wagon-R whose images recently leaked online on the Japanese social media channels.
The biggest change however will come in the form of the Stingray variant now being merged with the top end trim. That’s right Maruti has decided to eliminate the Stingray nameplate and add it with the current lineup and trims. The top end variant which is actually the Stingray variant will be called VXI+ trim while the other two trims on offer are LXI and VXI.
Now for all your information the lower LXI and the VXI trims will be based on the current car and gets few changes both inside and outside. The new hatchback gets few updates inside it now gets mildly updated seat fabrics. While the top of the line VXI+ trim which is based on the Stingray variant gets updated beige fabric upholstery on the seats and door cards. For the safety of the passenger the top end variant gets a driver side airbags as standard, while Maruti is providing dual airbags and ABS as standard across their range of cars as an option.
Under the hood the updated 2017 Wagon-R will not get any mechanical changes thus the 2017 model still continues to be powered by the same 1.0 Litre K series petrol engine capable of producing about 50 KW of peak power and 90 NM of torque. The engine is paired to a 5 speed manual gearbox while there is also an AMT transmission on offer.
2017 Maruti Suzuki Wagon-R Refresh
We already have reported few days earlier that Suzuki was planning to introduce the next generation Wagon-R soon. The leaked images of the next generation hatchback were also doing rounds on the internet and also on Japanese social media channels. We also have provided you all the information which is available about the new Japanese spec Wagon-R in our overview article. That said, we were actually quite surprised when we found out that Autos Arena in their latest reports said, Maruti actually has no plans to introduce the next generation Wagon-R in India anytime soon but instead of launching the new generation hatchback they have decided to give some updates to the old car and launch it as the new 2017 model.
The biggest news is that the new updated 2017 model will actually be based on their current Stingray variant. While the Stingray nameplate will be taken off their product chart. Furthermore the lineup will now also have a new top end variant as well.
The big decision was taken by Maruti Suzuki after they realized that the Stingray sells in very few numbers. What is even more surprising is also the fact that most of the dealers have now even stopped taking bookings for the top of the line Stingray variant.
Before we get into any other details let us inform you all that the updated 2017 Wagon-R model will be renamed as Wagon-R Refresh and it will be on sale in the Indian market soon.
