Not only that, in future all the Mahindra cars will come featuring both petrol and diesel engines. The automaker is investing a total of INR. 1000 crore to develop the petrol engines.

Our homegrown utility auto manufacturer Mahindra is mostly popular for their powerful and rugged diesel engines, and we all are in love with these engines which are fitted under the hood of their utility vehicles, including the popular Scorpio and the XUV500. Although Mahindra had introduced a petrol variant way back in 2002, in their first generation Scorpio but the low demand for the petrol unit was the reason for its downfall and since then Mahindra has not used any petrol engines in their Utility vehicles.

Now it is still not sure whether this is a completely new engine or is a bottom block of the existing 2.2 L, MHawk diesel unit, while the rest of the components that are used are completely new. Some reports also suggest that our homegrown utility vehicle manufacturer Mahindra is working closely with SsangYong for the development of new petrol engines. If the reports are considered true then we must be seeing two completely new engines, which comes in the form of a 1.0 Litre, three cylinder, turbocharged unit which will do its duty on smaller Mahindra SUV’s while the other is a 1.2 Litre, three cylinder unit.

2013 Mahindra XUV500 W4

2013 Mahindra XUV500 W4

So far, Mahindra has been doing quite well with XUV500. Albeit sales are going slightly down thanks to the new products, like the Nissan Terrano, that are taking a portion of its customers. Also, the increasing input costs have forced Mahindra to hike the prices of its products including the XUV500. Up until yesterday, the XUV500’s base price started at Rs 11.90 lakh for the W6 variant and ended at the top-of-the-line W8 AWD variant for Rs 14.55 Lakh (Ex-Showroom Mumbai).

To make the successful package a little bit more cheaper, say by Rs 1 Lakh, Mahindra has announced a new base variant for the XUV500. Called the XUV500 W4, it maintains the low price point by ditching out some features that come standard with the W6 variant. For instance, the W4 will not come with rain-sensing wipers automatic cornering headlamps, front fog lamps, telescopic steering adjustment, automatic climate control, cruise control and steering-mounted controls. It also comes with a basic 4 speaker music system hooked up to a monochrome display (unlike the fancy touchscreen in the W8).

Don’t think Mahindra has compromised a lot to keep the price low. The car still comes standard with halogen projector headlamps with LED daytime strips, dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, disc brakes all around, tilt-adjustable power steering, electric wing mirrors, remote central locking, a six-way mechanical adjustable driver’s seat and foldable second and third row seats.

Under the hood the XUV500 W4 is powered by the same 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine that puts out 140bhp that is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. All the other mechanicals remain identical to the other variants.

Prices start at Rs 10.88 Lakh (Ex-Showroom Mumbai). Overall, if you aren’t crazy behind the features that the XUV500 W4 will miss, this is one tough product to look away from.

Mahindra XUV500

We admit, from even before the start of the review, we were already sold to the XUV500. This doesn’t happen very often because it’s fundamental as an auto journo to remain unbiased and have no preconceived notions. But the XUV500 is no ordinary vehicle especially if you’re Indian and it’s impossible not to like it. 2011 Mahindra XUV500

2011 Mahindra XUV500

After many anticipations we finally have the occasion to see the real shape of the new Mahindra XUV500. At its global presentation in Pune, the new model was launched in full glory with specs and prices starting from Rs.10.80Lacs (ex-showroom Delhi), a reasonable price for an Indian SUV. The design keeps the usual curvy Mahindra lines. But what we can say is that in this case, Mahindra made some nice steps forward in matter of exterior and interior designs.

According to carmaker, under the hood of the new XUV500 we will find an 140bhp (103Kw) mHawk engine with 330Nm torque and a 6-speed transmission, 5th Generation Variable Geometry Turbocharger.
Mahindra XUV500 will hit the Indian roads with its latest technology including All Wheel Drive with Interactive Torque Management which combined with the 140 bhp engine should ensure a nice ride. Besides the all wheel drive system Mahindra will keep you safe with its Electronic Stability Program (ESP) with Rollover Mitigation, 6 Airbags (front, side and curtain), ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), and the Hill Hold Control & Hill Descent Control.

After this big launch all we can do its wait and see how the Indian market will receive this new model, I won’t be surprised if it will be sold as well as Scorpio. From what it looks like , the engine and especially the price, the new XUV500 could have a bright future on the Indian roads.
