Mahindra has been testing this SUV on India roads for a long time now and we all believed, perhaps this is the new SUV which will be replacing the old and ageing Bolero. However that is not the case the U301, which has been christened as the TUV300, will be selling alongside the Bolero SUV in India.
The compact SUV market has seen plenty of new launches recently from almost all the manufacturers present in the Indian market now and we are also sure that in the coming months we will also notice some new launches from different manufacturers. Mahindra already tried their hands on the compact SUV segment with the Quanto without much of a success, but the homegrown utility vehicle manufacturer is hopeful with their new product.
Coming to the new TUV300 compact SUV, the first letter of its name means ‘Tough’ which actually has been given to highlight its rough and tough stylish design. Not only the design is all new but it even gets a new platform which is really exciting because this SUV will surely handle and behave completely different than any other Mahindra SUV’s and especially the Quanto. Now as pormised the TUV300 has been launched with a single diesel engine which sia n updated variant of the MHawk diesel unit. The 1.5 Litre diesel unit has been paired with a 5 speed manual transmission while there is also an AMT on offer too.

The TUV300 is definitely a far better looking SUV than the old Quanto which actually looks like a smaller version of the Xylo SUV. The TUV300 definitely has its own unique identity which is its biggest point. What also sets it apart is the fact that it actually shares its chassis structure with the new generation Scorpio.
Coming to the styling the TUV300 looks rugged and its design has been inspired from a battle tank. Towards the front it gets this huge and bold looking grille and clear lens headlamps with well designed turn indicators. The front bumpers get rectangular fog lamps and even a rectangular air dam. The front bonnet also gets a bold design which actually helps in giving the SUV a commanding road presence. Now if we take a look closely you will notice that the front grille takes some of its inspirations from Jeep which is totally acceptable because Mahindra has added their own flavors to it.
The side profile of the SUV’s styling somehow helps to distract your mind from the overall boxy design of this compact SUV because it gets slightly slanting B pillar which actually seems to have worked in Mahindra’s favor, plus the addition of blacked out B and D Pillar definitely adds the premium feel to the overall exterior. The rest of the side profile gets squarish looking wheel arches and an impressive ground clearance which helps it stick to its true blue SUV character. The side profile also gets stylish roof rails too which can help in easy mounting of lifestyle accessories and other useful things.
Towards the rear the first thing which will attract your attention is the spare wheel mounted on the tailgate while the large wrap around taillamps helps in giving the SUV contemporary styling.
Now although the design does not look overdone but it looks abit more chunky considering the overall sub4 meter dimension of the SUV.
Step inside and the interior of the new TUV300 will surprise you because inside the story is totally different, the TUV300 gets duel tone dashboard finished in premium black and beige. The centre console gets hexagonal console which actually has been finished in Piano black and gets 2-DIN Audio compatible with Bluetooth, USB & AUX. The steering wheel in particular looks good because it gets mounted audio and phone controls.
The instrument cluster at the front gets twin pods which gets a sporty finish and definitely looks good at night time because of the amber backlighting and chrome ring on the dials. The hexagonal center console is not complete without the Silver accents on AC Vent outer ring. The TUV300 also has seating capacity of 5+2 passengers which has been made possible with the addition of the jump seats . The TUV300 also offers an amazing 400 litres of boot space at the rear which can be extended to 720 Litres if one folds the second row seats. There is also two 12 v charging points inside the cabin. While some top end variants also gets electronically adjustable ORVM’s.
The TUV300 is powered by 1.5 Litre three-cylinder mHawk 2-stage turbocharged diesel engine which is capable of producing about 84 Bhp of peak power at 3750 rpm and a class leading 230 NM of torque in between 1500-2250 rpm. This engine has been paired to a 5 speed manula transmission while there is also an option of first-in-class ‘autoSHIFT’ technology (Automated Manual Transmission) which sends power to the front wheels. The engine will surely feel punchy enough considering the overall size and weight of the vehicle.
This engine is extremely fuel efficient engine because it gets the ECO mode function and Micro-Hybrid Technology which is also seen in some other Mahindra vehicles including the Scorpio and XUV500. This diesel unit promises to return an impressive ARAI rated Fuel efficiency of 18.49kmpl.
The TUV300 will be Mahindra’s first SUV which will actually sit on the new body on frame chassis which has been developed for recently for the new generation Scorpio. The advantage of this new chassis is that it weighs much less than its earlier ladder on frame chassis, although the length of the Chassis will be actually shorter than that of the Scorpio for obvious reasons. For that reason expect the new TUV300 to also handle better than the compact SUV Quanto

The Mahindra TUV300 will take on the Ford Ecosport, Hyundai Active i20 and the Fiat Avventura.
Ford Ecosport definitely will be this upcoming compact SUV’s biggest rival keeping in mind the price point. The Ecosport is definitely one of the popular compact Crossovers of the country and also comes with plenty of engine options as well. The Ford Ecosport besides the petrol powertrains also gets a diesel powertrain as well which comprises of a 1.5 Litre which produces a healthy 100 ps of peak power and 215 Nm of torque.
The Fiat Avventura also earned quite a name for itself in the Indian market for its wild looks, although this is only a hatchback which has been made to appear like a SUV but both its exterior and interior will surely impress anyone. This Crossover shares the same engine options with the Punto Evo hatchback and its diesel variant is powered by a 1.3 Liter 16v DOHC four-cylinder unit which produces about 93 Ps of peak power and 209 Nm of torque.
The TUV300 like already mentioned above seats on a brand new platform which has been developed and built in-house by the Mahindra design team, while its research and development has been carried out entirely at the Mahindra Research Valley in Chennai. Its looks surely are inspiring and also give us a hint of what Mahindra has stored for us. Only time will tell whether this compact SUV lives upto the expectations or falls flat on its face.
