An year after the Discovery Sport went on sale globally, Land Rover is finally launching the SUV in India. The launch is expected to take place on the 2nd of September. This comes a month after the car was spotted testing on Indian roads. Dealers have also started takings bookings of the vehicle. Land Rover recently started assembling the car at its factory in Pune.
The Land Rover Discovery Sport is a new compact SUV from the British manufacturer that takes its design cues from the Range Rover Evoque. The car gets features like self parking, pedestrian airbag, ambient lighting, 8-inch touchscreen system, panoramic sunroof and dual zone climate control. The car can seat 7 people.
The new SUV will come with a choice of 2 engine options. The petrol is a 2.0 litre turbocharged engine producing 250 PS while the diesel is a 2.2 litre engine producing 180 PS. Both engines will be paired to a 9-speed automatic transmission. Power is sent to all four wheels.
The car will replace the Freelander 2 in the company’s line-up and will take on the BMW X3, Audi Q5, Volvo XC60 and the upcoming Mercedes-Benz GLE. Expect the SUV to be priced around INR 50 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi).
This will definitely catch your attention because the Land Rover Discovery Sport was caught being tested on the roads of Mumbai which gives only one indication and that is Land Rover will be launching their newest SUV soon in the Indian market.
The new Discovery Sport is a replacement for the already existing Freelander2 SUV and it uses the same platform which is also shared with the Evoque. This SUV will be imported and sold in the market via the CKD route and thus it will be assembled at the company’s Pune facility and will also be priced aggressively.
When it comes to styling surely the Discovery Sport won’t disappoint anyone because the new SUV styling has been inspired mostly from all the new generation Land Rover vehicles including the Range Rover Sport and Evoque. Towards the front the Sport has been equipped with Xenon headlamps and horizontally position fog lamps while the front grille looks almost identical to the ones you find the other Range Rover vehicles beside all these you will also notice a muscular looking front bumper completed with skid plates as well.
The side profile of the SUV looks little less boxy mainly because of its aerodynamic design while the huge wheel arches and impressive ground clearance definitely will help you if you ever feel like taking this SUV off the tarmac. Towards the rear you can also notice some interesting looking LED taillamps as well.
Land Rover Discovery Sport which was introduced recently to the world and replaces the Freelander 2 will be launched in the month of August 2015 in India. This SUV has been built on the same platform which supports the Range Rover Evoque but Land Rover made plenty of modification to this platform in order to support the new SUV.
The Discovery Sport will be assembled locally at the Land Rovers Pune facility and thus expect the entry level SUV from Land Rovers pricing to be competitive. This SUV will compete against the already existing Audi Q5 and BMW X3. Although this SUV is not as big as other Land Rover SUV’s but it comes with a 3rd row seating but don’t expect the 3rd row to be spacious like the other bigger 7 seater SUV’s . The Discovery Sport definitely looks aggressive and will be equipped with Land Rover’s new InControl touchscreen infotainment system which is easy to operate, while for the comfort of the passengers inside the Discovery Sport also gets duel zone climate control and lastly Panoramic Sunroof. ZThe Discovery Sport also gets Land Rovers popular Terrain Response four-wheel-drive system which makes the SUV an equally good performer beyond the tarmac just like any other Land Rover SUV’s.
Expect the upcoming Discovery Sport to get the 2.2 Litre diesel unit under the hood which will most probably be available with 2 states of tune one producing 150 Ps of peak power while the other will produce about 190 Ps of peak power, this diesel unit will be equipped with a 9 speed automatic gearbox. Because this SUV will be assembled in India expect the pricing to be within 40-50 Lakh bracket (ex showroom).

The Discovery Sport is based on the Evoque platform and under the bonnet you will find a 2.2 Litre turbo diesel unit which also powers the Evoque and used to power the Freelander as well. This tried and tested diesel unit mated to a 9 speed automatic gearbox produces about 187 Bhp of peak power at 3500 rpm and 310 Lb ft of torque at 1750 rpm. This transmission sends power to all the 4 wheels and makes it an extremely capable SUV which can actually take you out of any situation plus the terrain response system and all those electronics that Land Rover has fitted inside the SUV really makes this SUV a true off road performer.

Jaguar Land Rover main focus always was to make sure that the person driving the vehicle remains informed and alert about their own vehicle and also their surroundings for their own safety and also for the safety of other road users, we have seen them inventing the invisible bonnet technology which will be used in their SUV Discovery in the near future. Recently we also have seen them unveiling yet another technology known as ‘Jaguar Virtual Windscreen’ concept which will aid road and track driving.
This new technology will provide the person driving the vehicle with high quality graphics and information virtually and thus will use the entire front windscreen just like a head-up display unit and will project high quality hazard, speed and navigation icons on the windscreen in this way the driver will never have to take their eyes away from the road ahead thus reducing the risk of any accidents. Land Rover has revealed the 2014 New York Auto Show bound Discovery Vision Concept. It is the first step towards a revolutionary change in design language for the rugged off-roader. If the Range Rover is for ferrying the high-class elite, then the Discovery has been the workhorse of the Land Rover family.
The new Discovery Concept has been designed around modern technology with innovative systems like Transparent Bonnet head-up display, Laser headlamps and gesture control, Terrain Response system with Remote Control Drive and Laser Terrain Scanning. The spacecraft is the brain child of Sir Richard Branson of Virgin and is amongst the pioneers of commercial space flight.
The Discover Vision Concept borrows cues from the current Land Rover line up. The slender grille and wrap around head lamps with a bold, upright stance is characteristic of modern Land Rovers. Unique design elements like the stepped roof and alpine lights make it on to the concept.

Since the acquisition of Jaguar-Land Rover by the Tata Group, the British marque has established a strong foothold in the Indian market. With renewed investments, Jaguar-Land Rover now assembles their products locally from CKD kits. This has helped bring the prices of their cars down to more competitive level.
Meanwhile the luxury segment in India is growing with a steady pace, despite the global downturns. To capitalize on the favorable market situation, JLR is constantly looking for more products that could suit the Indian buyer. Now, the firm plans to introduce a new SUV priced under the Freelander 2.
The upcoming premium SUV, codenamed Q5 will be priced in the range of INR 20-25 lakh and will be pitted against the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour and the Hyundai Santa Fe. It will be based on the current Freelander 2 platform with a few modifications to suit Indian road and environmental conditions. This project was initiated under the leadership of Carl Peter Forster, former CEO of Tata Motors. The upcoming SUV could also benefit from the technologies developed at JLR. It could also borrow diesel engines from the Freelander 2.
Now, Tata Motors had earlier tried their luck at a high-priced SUV in the form of the Aria, which didn’t go well. Now, with JLR onboard, Tata Motors might be more successful with their plans this time around. I mean, an SUV with a Land Rover badge and DNA seems like the right choice to beat the Fortuner on its own turf.
