new Discovery Sport does not look boxy at all more importantly this SUV looks compact and well proportioned
As already mentioned above this is the first member of the new Discovery family, the Discovery Sport design has been inspired from the Discovery sport Vision Concept.
A major issue with almost all the Land Rover SUV’s is their boxy designs but this new Discovery Sport does not look boxy at all more importantly this SUV looks compact and well proportioned. The front with its newly designed grille and very minutely designed headlamps gives the SUV a dominating character, the front is further accented by the newly sculpted bonnet and the huge sculpted front bumper. While the side profile with the huge glass area looks really interesting, take a closer look and you will notice that the roofline gently descends towards the rear of the SUV which actually make the SUV appear sportier. Towards the rear of this SUV there is newly designed tail lamps which looks extremely futuristic and the presence of rear spoiler make things more interesting.
The Discovery Sport interior is built of high quality materials, the interior is really practical
Land Rover also unveiled a short video and few images of the interiors of the upcoming Discovery Sport. The Discovery Sport will be unveiled infront of the crowd at the Paris Motor Show.
In the above provided video you can clearly watch that the cabin and some of its features are highlighted as well as teased. The Discovery Sport will feature unique 5+2 flexible seating layout while it will also come with a full panoramic roof. Gerry McGovern, Design Director and Chief Creative Officer said the Discovery Sport with its 5+2 seating will provide generous load space and will feature configurable seating. He also added that the upcoming compact SUV from Land Rover truly deserves to wear the Discovery badge.
The Discovery Sport interior is built of high quality materials, the interior is really practical because it comes with plenty of storage options integrated into the cabin itself, there are four 12 V sockets and six USB charging socket which are available with all the three rows of seating via which the occupants can charge multiple electronic instruments. Although this is a compact SUV but Land Rover has designed it in such a way that it supports 5+2 seating.
The new Discovery Sport also comes with all-new multi-link rear axle which not only allows impressive and engaging driving dynamics but also an impressive space behind the rear seats. At the front the Discovery Sport also gets Head-Up Display which will help the driver to concentrate more on the roade while driving and also stay informed at the same time, In the center console an all-new 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system will keep the occupants entertained, the tilt-and-slide row-two seating will allow maximum interior configurability.
The Land Rover Discovery Sport has been launched in India with the 2.2 Litre diesel engine option which is available in two states of tune.
The TD4 variant produces about 148 BHp of peak power and 400 Nm of torque while the more powerful SD4 variant produces about 188 BHP of peak power and 420 NM of torque. All the models of the Discovery sport comes paired to a 9 speed automatic transmission which also does duty with the drivetrains of the Evoque. Apart from the 9 speed gearbox all the variant of the Discovery Sport also gets terrain response system, power assisted steering wheel etc.
RIDE AND HANDLING
The Land Rover Discovery Sport is built around on a steel monocoque chassis which is also used by other Land Rover SUV’s like the stylish Evoque. The Discovery Sport has been fitted with existing strut front long-travel suspension and the new and improved coil-sprung multi-link rear suspension which makes sure that the SUV is always refined and comfortable both on and off road.
This may be a compact SUV and also weighs much lesser than the existing Freelander but it has all the Land Rovers capabilities of performing some serious offroading duty, this SUV has a breakover angles of 25, 31 and 21 degrees respectively while it also comes with Land Rovers popular Terrain response technology and water wading capability of 600 meters. This SUV also sports a new and improved braking system which adds to handling characteristics of the SUV.

The upcoming Discovery Sport will face some tough competition from the Audi Q5 when it will be launched in the Indian market.
The third generation X3 has not received a huge amount of change on its exterior but it surely has everything to it which will help it to compete with its rivals in its segment. The X3 is available with two engine options in India the X Drive 20D which is powered by a four cylinder diesel unit and it is capable of producing about 184 of maximum power at 4000 rpm and 380 Nm of torque between 1,750 – 2,750 rpm while the more powerful straight 6 cylinder diesel engine produces about 258 bhp of maximum power and 560 Nm of massive torque between 2,000-2,750 rpm. Both these engines come mated to a 8 speed automatic transmission.
It was launched in the Indian market back in the year 2009 and although it didn’t became as popular as its big brother the Q7 we have to agree that this too is one worthy SUV. This SUV is available with both diesel and petrol engine options which is its biggest advantage. The 1984cc 4-cyls in-line direct injection turbo-petrol engine generates maximum power of 221bhp at 4500-6200rpm and 35.6kgm of torque at 1750-4500rpm, the other 1968cc 4-cyl inline turbo diesel engine generates 174bhp of maximum power at 1750-2500rpm and 38.7kgm at 1500-2500rpm. Whereas the bigger 2967cc V6 turbo diesel engine generates 245bhp of maximum power at 4000-4500rpm and maximum torque of 59 kgm at 1400-3250rpm. The pricing of this SUV starts from about Rs. 43.17 Lakhs.
The Land Rover Dicsovery Sport definitely brings with it fresh new styling and many modern technologies. This new SUV will be built at the Land Rover Plant in Halewood, U.K and will be available in more than 170 markets across the World.
Do not expect these engines to be over enthusiastic but it can certainly take you to different places. The huge amount of torque on the other hand will help you to actually overcome any obstacles if you plan to take your vehicle offroad. This Land Rover has got some offroading capability which are further supported by the terrain responsive system. Apart from all that the vehicle also has good departure and approach and even ramp breakover angles. It can also wade through 600 mm of water which is pretty impressive for this SUV.

Discovery competition to send four winners to space with Virgin Galactic
Land Rover has revealed the new Discovery Sport, the world’s most versatile and capable premium compact SUV. The first member of the new Discovery family, Discovery Sport, features 5+2 seating in a footprint no larger than existing 5-seat premium SUVs.
Discovery Sport’s progressive new design approach defines the new Discovery family with optimised volume, proportions and stance. Its design leadership combines with engineering integrity to result in a dynamic profile, the ultimate use of interior space and 5+2 seating configurability.
"Our challenge has been to combine premium design with exceptional versatility; the two attributes must work in harmony," said Gerry McGovern, Land Rover Design Director and Chief Creative Officer. "I’m proud to say we’ve achieved that; Discovery Sport’s dynamic design will resonate on an emotional level with consumers, and this vehicle is more versatile than any other premium compact SUV on the market."
Land Rover digitally revealed the new Discovery Sport at Spaceport America in New Mexico, USA, also launching the Land Rover Galactic Discovery competition. Four friends are set to win a once-in-a-lifetime trip to space with Land Rover’s global partner, Virgin Galactic as part of an innovative digital competition at www.landrover.com/gotospace.
This spirit of adventure is reflected in Discovery Sport’s interior, which has been designed with customers at its core. It features high-quality materials and a strong vertical centre console graphic to reflect the premium design of the exterior, while the core Discovery value of versatility is evident everywhere. Storage solutions are integrated into the cabin and up to four 12V power points and six USB charging sockets can be specified for all three rows of seating, allowing multiple electronic devices to be charged simultaneously.
A host of innovations have allowed Discovery Sport to introduce the versatility of 5+2 seating into the premium compact SUV class for the first time. An all-new multi-link rear axle not only provides engaging driving dynamics but it also provides ample and flexible cabin space behind the second row.
Coupled with supple long-travel suspension, the innovative rear axle also ensures the Discovery Sport is comfortable, refined and rewarding to drive on-road, while retaining the breadth of all-terrain capability for which Land Rover is world-renowned. In fact, with approach, departure and breakover angles of 25, 31 and 21 degrees respectively, Terrain Response® technology, and the ability to wade to 600mm, Discovery Sport offers class-leading capability in all conditions.
As with every new Land Rover, safety has been a key priority in the development of the new Discovery Sport, resulting in a first-in-class pedestrian airbag, autonomous emergency braking, and a state-of-the-art bodyshell featuring both ultra-high-strength steel and lightweight aluminium.
This represents a fraction of the advanced equipment available in Discovery Sport, which also includes Head-Up Display, an all-new 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and tilt-and-slide row-two seating for maximum interior configurability.
At launch the Discovery Sport will be equipped with a range of four-cylinder turbocharged petrol and diesel engines. Both the all-alloy Si4 2.0-litre petrol engine and the 2.2-litre turbodiesel feature stop-start technology, high-pressure direct injection, low-friction internal components and smart regenerative charging for outstanding performance and economy.
Later in 2015, a highly efficient ED4 turbodiesel engine will join the range with CO2 emissions of just 119g/km*. Both 9-speed automatic and 6-speed manual transmissions are available, along with a choice of two- or four-wheel-drive.
"Not only does Discovery Sport mark the introduction of the first new member of our expanding Discovery family, it also brings the versatility of 5+2 seating to the compact premium SUV market," said Phil Popham, Jaguar Land Rover Group Marketing Director. "Discovery Sport’s versatility is a key differentiator. It is quite simply the most accomplished vehicle in its segment."
Discovery Sport will be produced at Land Rover’s award-winning manufacturing facility at Halewood, Liverpool. It goes on sale in early 2015 alongside the existing seven-seat Land Rover Discovery in over 170 markets worldwide.

Land Rover is the first global partner of pioneering commercial spaceline Virgin Galactic
Global partners in adventure, innovation and exploration, Land Rover and Virgin Galactic, have opened the doors on the world of prototype testing and development. For the first time both brands compare the parallels and complexities behind the test and development of a new vehicle. Both Land Rover and Virgin Galactic have used their partnership to share values and experiences that have steered each brand to develop cutting edge technologies for both land and space.
The pioneering partnership, announced in April this year, has continued to make strides through Land Rover’s continued development of the new Discovery Sport vehicle while Virgin Galactic moves closer to the launch of the world’s first spaceline.
As the new Discovery Sport enters its final testing phase, Land Rover and Virgin Galactic, which continues its flight test and engineering programs ahead of the launch of its commercial spaceflight programme, are giving a glimpse of what goes into their test and development programmes.
Murray Dietsch, Programme Director, Land Rover, said: "There is a common philosophy towards engineering between Land Rover and our partners Virgin Galactic. We start with an idea and build from there, spending years refining a design and completing virtual testing before the first prototypes see the tarmac. As our partnership with Virgin Galactic develops, it will be fascinating to get closer to their team and explore common areas of engineering and expertise.
"Discovery Sport prototypes have covered approximately 750,000 miles during the testing phase, in some of the world’s harshest and most challenging terrains and climates. A total of 181 prototype vehicles were built, completing over 11,000 tests over their lifetimes around the globe, ensuring total confidence in the robustness of build and design of the vehicles."
"As we look to launching the world’s first spaceline, Virgin Galactic continues to push boundaries and develop pioneering new innovations that bring to life our vision," said George Whitesides, CEO of Virgin Galactic. "In engineering and design, like Land Rover, our focus is on precision, ingenuity, and unparalleled design."
