The lightweight new generation Jaguar sedan is here

The XF was first introduced in the Jaguar lineup in the year 2007 and as a replacement for the S-Type, it served well for Jaguar and also collected some impressive sales numbers, but as the competition in the premium executive mid-size luxury sedan market increased Jaguar needed to put their hands inside their magic bag and pull out a new surprise and that is what exactly they did. Jaguar introduced the new generation XF at the 2015 New York Auto Show before the live audience.

The second generation XF is much more technologically advanced than its predecessor and is also 80 Kilograms lighter than its competition. You must be wondering how this is even possible well! Jaguar has used their all new aluminium-intensive architecture which by the way is also used by XF’s sister XE sedan

The new and updated Jaguar XF surely looks gorgeous and because it uses almost 75 percent aluminium construction, the new platform and architecture has helped the structure to become more rigid and also lighter, like we already mentioned, the new XF is almost 190 KG lighter than its predecessor.

Before getting into the cosmetic changes let me inform you that the new XF is 7 m shorter and 3 mm lower in height than its predecessor but its wheelbase length has been increased by almost 51 mm which has helped in creating more room inside.

On the styling font the new Jaguar XF sedan looks like a grown up XE because it borrows most of its styling cues from the entry level offering from Jag. Perhaps jaguar wanted to keep the typical Jaguar’s visual elements alive so towards the front the new sharp headlamps will remind you of the XE in every way but what makes the front nose more interesting is how they have designed the front grille which actually looks like the front air vents, in this way the front does not look too aggressive nor too boring and adds a sporty stance towards the front. While towards the side profile the extra third window towards the rear actually helps more light to come inside and because this is not exactly a huge sedan it helps in giving more sense of space inside. You can also notice a new strong character line which starts from the top of the front headlamps and ends towards the rear taillamps.

Towards the rear the new detailing on the split taillamps looks sharp, according to Jaguar the new taillamps design has been inspired from their sportscar F-Type, while the twin exhaust adds the sporty look towards the rear.

In India the new Jaguar XF is offered in three grades which includes the Pure, Prestige and top-spec Portfolio grades. If we talk about equipment levels then the topo end Portfolio trim gets bi-functional Xenon headlamps alongb with integrated ’J’ shaped LED daytime running lamps. Towards the side profile the top spec sedan gets bigger 18 inch wheels while the other grades gets 17 inch wheels.

The new XF interiors blends the best of everything starting from quality materials and finishes, state of the art technology and also Jaguars newest addition the InControl Touch Pro infotainment system and also 12 inch TFT instrument cluster. This advanced infotainment display gets the 10.2 inch touch screen display which has duel screen view via which the driver can see various information such as navigation while the co passengers can watch TV or DVD. To handle all these data the InControl Touch Pro features a quad core processor.

Beside the Infotainment system the rest of the interior looks way too different than its predecessor, the central console for example appears to be wider and comes with lot of storage spaces. While the rest of the interior look neatly finished. Due to the longer wheelbase the sedan n ow has more room inside. It gets 15mm more rear legroom, 24mm more rear knee room and also 27mm more rear headroom than its predecessor.

The new XF is made available with both petrol and diesel drivetrains in India. The petrol variant gets the 2.0-litre petrol engine, which produces about 237 hp of peak power and 340Nm of torque, the petrol engine comes standard on the Prestige and Portfolio trims. The petrol engine can sprint from 0-100 km/h mark in seven seconds. An eight-speed automatic gearbox does duty on the petrol variant and sends power to the rear wheels.

As far as the diesel variant is concerned the XF diesel variant is powered by the 2.0-litre four-cylinder Ingenium diesel engine which is capable of producing about 177 hp of peak power and 430 Nm of torque. The engine is paired to the same 8 speed automatic transmission. The diesel variant is able to sprint from 0-100 km/h mark in 8.1 second.

The BMW 5 Series is one tough competitor for the XF because it has recently received a mid-life facelift while the new generation 5 series will be introduced in the year 2016. The 5 series is available basic, entry-level 520d is available in two trims, while the mid-range 525d comes solely as ’Luxury Line’ and the top-of-the-range 530d gets the M Sport treatment.

The new-gen XF is way ahead of its successor it is technologically advanced and light which definitely improves its handling while the interesting engine lineup too makes it one impressive competitor. The advanced premium infotainment system and the refreshed interiors add more upmarket feel inside the cabin. There is no doubt in the fact that the XF sedan got even better.
