Hyundai Santro was a very popular compact hatchback in India between 1997 - 2014

Hyundai Santro is one of the most famous cars this country has ever seen in its automotive history. When the South Korean automaker Hyundai entered Indian automotive industry in late 90’s they introduced the model Santro as the first tallboy of the country. Immediately after the launch of the car Santro became immensely popular in Indian market.

The Hyundai Santro is the model which went selling in India for 17 long years before the automaker stopped manufacturing and selling the car in 2014. But still after two years the car has been popular among people. The tallboy design and the MPFI engine was the main USP of the popular Santro. During its 17 years of lifespan in Indian market the car sold 13.6 lakh units in the domestic market, while it exported 5.35 lakh units to the overseas markets. When Hyundai was phasing out the Santro, at that time also the car was selling around 2500 units every month. In the first fiscal half of 2014 – 2015 Hyundai India sold 14595 units of Santro in India.

Meanwhile the automaker has garnered a strong customer base in the country, which has inspired the Hyundai to re-launch the Santro again. Last month we reported that the Hyundai is planning to introduce the Santro again to Indian market in an all new avatar. Now a spyshot has popped up in the web, which suggests the automaker is already in an advanced position in the development process of the next generation Hyundai Santro.

The new Santro will don exciting look and features and it will be based on the automaker’s new generation design language. Compare to the old model the new Santro will look aggressive and more stylish, as the spyshots suggest.

What do we know so far

There is no denying the fact that the Santro hatchback is that one car which has helped Hyundai to establish them as a brand in India. The car became so popular that it even challenged the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Alto. The small hatchback was introduced in 1998 and was actually phased out in 2014. Although Hyundai tried to replace it with a better and much more premium looking hatchback i10 but it definitely did not achieved what the Santro has achieved in its 16 year career.

Now according to current reports Hyundai has decided to relaunch the new generation Santro which will actually be positioned above the Eon and will replace the i10 available in the Indian market. Now although the car was not yet spotted being tested on road but expect it to be bigger, more premium and obviously will get a more powerful and improved engine which will also be fuel efficient at the same time. Some reports on the internet also suggest that Hyundai has already started on their upcoming hatchback.
