The premium hatchback from Hyudai has recieved subtle cosmetic updates for both its exterior as well as interior

Hyundai has updated their premium hatchback offering the i20 for the Indian market. There is no doubt that the Elite i20 hatchback attracted a lot of attention when it was launched but the sales figures dipped south when Maruti introduced the Baleno in India because it offered the better package at that price point. But Hyundai is unwilling to leave the competition yet and thus decided to updated their current premium hatchback.

Although the changes are subtle both inside and outside the additional equipment now added to the hatchback surely has made the current hatchback a better value for money product for certain. So without any further due let’s get straight to the point, shall we?

2018 Hyundai Elite i20 With Fancy Wheels Spotted Testing

2018 Hyundai Elite i20 With Fancy Wheels Spotted Testing

Will most probably get few cosmetic updates to the exterior and a new set of alloy wheels

A pre-production test mule of the upcoming 2018 Hyundai Elite i20 facelift was recently spotted caught being tested in India. The test mule was covered in heavy camouflage but what caught everyone’s attention was the new set of fancy alloy wheels. The design of the new alloy wheels looked identical to that of the Mercedes CLA Sport’s 17-inch 5-spoke unit.

The test mule was covered in heavy camouflage, but the facelift i20 apparently will continue with the same fluidic design language of the current generation hatchback. The premium hatchback will continue with the same hexagonal shaped grille towards the front with chrome slats. However, we do feel that the facelift variants front bumper will be tweaked while it will most probably also gets a redesigned headlamps as well. We will be happy if Hyundai launches the facelift variant of the hatchback equipped with a fancy set of alloy wheels. Towards the rear expect the hatchback also to get a redesigned rear bumper and taillamps. Although the test mule was covered and the interiors were not visible expect it to get an updated seat upholstery and a multi-information display in between the twin instrument cluster pods and a new touchscreen infotainment system as standard across all its variants.

Top 10 best-selling passenger cars in February; Kwid enters list

Top 10 best-selling passenger cars in February; Kwid enters list

After the storm comes the lull and this holds true for the automotive industry too. After the sales storm of the festive season, the sales of cars are coming back to normal. The sales in February though are not actually normal, as most of the automakers have experienced sharp decline over the previous year’s numbers.

It seems that whatever the market situation may be it will not have any effect on who occupies the top spot. Month after month it has been the same story and February is not any different with Maruti Alto still numero uno with 21,286 units sold. But the bestseller too has felt the heat with sales dropping 17% over the 2015 figure. The next three slots are also occupied by the country’s largest automaker. The Dzire compact sedan has swapped places with its hatchback sibling, the Swift, for second place. The sedan has managed 17,410 units while bucking the trend and managing a 2% growth. The popular Swift hatchback dropped one place while registering a huge slide of 21% but still selling 15,475 units; this fall can be linked to increased competition and even cannibalization from its stablemate, the Baleno.

The original tallboy – Wagon R– held on to its fourth position from last year with a slight 1% decrease in sales. The other two entries from Maruti in the list are the new Baleno premium hatchback and the Ciaz mid-size sedan; they managed to shift 6,888 and 5,162 units respectively. Hyundai confirmed its popularity after Maruti by putting three cars in the top 10 list.

The premium hatchback featured Hyundai’s ‘Fluidic Sculpture 2.0’ design philosophy and came loaded with new equipment that was seen for the first time in the segment. The hatchback went on to win the “Car of the Year” award in the country.

Hyundai will introduce touchscreen to i20, i20 Active and Verna

Hyundai will introduce touchscreen to i20, i20 Active and Verna

Earlier we reported in our website about Hyundai Elite i20 getting a new touchscreen infotainment system (Read it here), as we got the latest information, the auto manufacturer will install touchscreen infotainment systems to the i20 Active and Verna too.

The South Korean auto manufacturer saw an 8.3% sales growth in the period of June, 2015 from the same month last year. With this success to boast, they are doing some revamp job on their vehicles, which comes in form of shedding some equipments from Elite i20, as well as adding a few to the premium hatch as well as to the upcoming i20 Active, the crossover based on i20 and also one the sedan Verna 4S. Hyundai already removed the 12V power outlet from the Asta Rim of i20, which is the top one, the mid spec variants too received some makeover jobs in form of removal of leathers wrapping over steering wheel and gear knob. We guess, they did this just to make the way for new touchscreen as it would help to keep the price hike level lower. We heard the new installation on i20 and i20 Active will take place on July end whereas The Verna will get the touch screen during the forthcoming Indian festive season, around October this year.

Hyundai i20’s biggest rival at present is new Honda Jazz, which was launched few days back, and as the new Honda Jazz got touchscreen infotainment system, therefore Hyundai needed to give their same segmented popular vehicles a makeover as an overdue requirement to keep up the competition. The Tata Bolt also features a touchscreen infotainment system, although that is not much popular like Jazz’s is.

Hyundai Elite i20 Loses Some Bling

Hyundai Elite i20 Loses Some Bling

The premium hatchback offering from Hyundai who also happens to be a direct rival of the newly launched Honda Jazz surely lost some of its bling. The Korean auto manufacturer decided some of the features which were available with the hatchback earlier.

The Magnum trim of theElite i20 has not received any changes but the other trim including base Era trim, the i20 Sportz trim and the Sports (O) trim and the top of the line Asta Trim will now come with some reduced features. Now talking about the changes the base Era trim will not be getting the passenger side vanity mirror anymore, while the i20 Sportz trim won’t be getting the leather wrapped steering wheel and knob which actually means that now only the top of the line Asta trim will benefit from the leather wrapped steering wheel and gear knob. The Sportz trim will also miss out the driver side window auto up function and will also get a single folding key instead of the two folding keys that it used to offer earlier.

If you actually think the top of the line Asta trim remains untouched from all the changes then you will be wrong because it will now be offered with a single 12V power outlet instead of two that it used to offer earlier. Apart from these major changes al the trims now also gets differently styled seat upholstery as well and they won’t also be getting the ticket holder as well.

The Hyundai Elite i20 To Get A Touchscreen Infotainment System Soon

The already premium interiors of the new Elite i20 will now get even more premium touches because Hyundai has decided to equip the new i20 with an all new touchscreen infotainment system.

This factory fitted infotainments system will feature satellite navigation, telephone function and an audio system. This touchscreen infotainment system will most probably only be available with the top end variant of the Elite i20 from the next month of July onward. As many of you already know the European spec of the Hyundai i20 already offers a 7 inch LCD touchscreen infotainment unit which also comes with a hands free Bluetooth system perhaps the Indian spec Elite i20 will also feature an identical unit.

The soon to be launched Honda Jazz already feature a new touchscreen infotainment system ( we have seen in the teaser video) and perhaps just in order to give the main rival of the i20 less edge Hyundai also decided to add the new feature to attract some more attention of the customers towards their hatchback. However the only hatchback which already offers a touchscreen infotainment system currently is the Tata Bolt. The Honda Jazz is surely raising some hopes and expectations in the minds of the customers with its spacious interiors and a diesel engine option along with petrol unit and perhaps Hyundai knows that very well that it is going to be touch competition and that is perhaps their little effort to make their offering even more attractive.

OVERVIEW 2015 Hyundai I20 Active

2015 Hyundai I20 Active

Do you like the concept of Cross hatchbacks? because quite honestly I do not. If you ask me why I can give you many and the list goes like this; how is it different from a regular hatchback upon which they are actually based on, these Cross hatchbacks are compared with SUV’s and just by adding some side cladding, rugged looking bumpers and changing some interior features or adding some new colors to make it look different from their standard hatchback avatar does really change the purpose or nature of the car without actually re-engineering it?

When all the other Cross hatchbacks failed to create an impression in the Indian market like the Toyota Cross or the Volkswagen Cross Polo, Hyundai actually tried their best and launched the i20 Active in the Indian market which actually is based on their newly launched Elite i20 premium hatchback. Now Hyundai claims that this car is targeted towards the Active owners of India who wants something more out or their regular life or wants to live the ‘Active life’ and the new Cross hatchback surely looks adventurous or purposefully made to look like so.

The i20 Active surely looks different than the standard hatchback and the addition of lot of new elements has actually made it appear rugged but just like the other Cross hatches available in the Indian market the i20 Active too shares the same engines with the hatchback Elite i20.

But how does the i20 Active really differs from the hatchback variant is what we need to find here..

Hyundai I20 Cross Launching In March 2015

Hyundai I20 Cross Launching In March 2015

According to the recent reports Hyundai will be launching the Crossover variant of their popular premium hatchback Elite i20 this year March. The i20 Cross has not been revealed yet and although it was spotted testing on Indian roads number of occasions but was covered in heavy camouflage.

Now most of the Crossovers launched in the Indian market are based on their hatchback siblings and beside just an increased ride height and addition of some extra side claddings to make the hatch appear more rugged and muscular to play the Crossover character. Expect the Hyundai i20 too to be equipped with extra claddings towards its side; it might also get bigger wheels and extra few inches of additional ground clearance to get over some rough tarmac, attractive roof rails and most probably even a new front face which might perhaps also include an extra muscular front bumper. Expect the new I20 Cross to also comes equipped with a completely new set of projector headlamps and also front DRL’s(Daytime running lamps).

Under the hood of the i20 Cross you will find the same petrol and diesel engine engines which powers the regular Elite i20. The i20 uses a 1.2 litre Kappa petrol engine which produces about 85 Ps of peak power and 113 Nm of torque. While the diesel variant uses a 1.4 liter CRDi unit which produces about 90 Ps of peak power and 219 Nm of torque. The petrol unit has been mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox while the diesel unit remains mated with a 6 speed manual although there is talk that Hyundai might also introduce an automatic variant too later.

The i20 Cross will be manufactured at Hyundai’s Chennai plant which by the way will also be this vehicles main factory globally. Expect it to be priced almost Rs. 50, 000 to 70, 000 more than the Elite i20.

Spied: Is this the next generation Hyundai i20

Spied: Is this the next generation Hyundai i20

Hyundai is busy testing the next-generationi20 hatchback in Europe. This small family car is destined for the Indian market sporting what looks like a rather attractive rear end. Boot lid and the tail lamp graphics remind me of their sister brand Kia. I wonder what the front end looks like.

Anyway, the new Hyundai i20 will make its world debut at the 2014 Paris Motor Show in October. Under the bonnet, the car would continue to use the same engines as before. But, major changes have been made to the exterior. Although the front end of the cars is hidden from view, you can clearly see the wrap-around rear windshield with faux C-pillar, Looks neat.

Inside, the cabin is clearly inspired from the current generation Sonata. The steering wheel is chunkier and is a four-spoke unit. The instruments too are clear and the center console extends out of the instrument binnacle, overall the quality looks immaculate. The switch gear too seems premium. I’ve got a gut feeling that this new i20 will prove to be an eyesore for Maruti Suzuki.

The Indian version will be available with a 1.2-liter Kappa petrol with 84 PS and 114 Nm mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, whereas the 1.4-liter CRDi diesel puts out 90 PS and 220 Nm. The automatic variant comes with 1.4-liter petrol and with 100 PS of power and 136 Nm of torque.

Fastest cars in India

Fastest cars in India

If there is a manufacturer which ought to be happy and benefit from our list then it’s got to be Hyundai. Perceptions about Hyundai couldn’t have been more different from what our list suggests. Out of the 9 cars on our list of the fastest accelerating cars to 100kmph in India, 3 are Hyundai’s. In India and internationally Hyundai’s are known to provide value for money amongst other thing. ButHyundai’s aren’t considered to be tailored towards enthusiasts. Surprisingly enough and going against the flow, some of the fastest cars in India are Hyundai’s. There are also 2Skoda’s in our list which isn’t a surprise and the Laura has been praised by all automotive publications for its handling and performance. The Mitsubishi Cedia also finds its way which though might not surprise many readers but it would surprise some who had assumed that the Cedia was now out of production. Volkswagen is represented by the Polo 1.6 which is amongst the few aspirational cars in India. Another interesting entry worth noting is the Volvo S60 T6 which is a highly underestimated car but surprisingly there is only one BMW amongst the nine cars.

2012 Fastest accelerating diesel hatch in India

2012 Fastest accelerating diesel hatch in India

If you were surprised on knowing that the Hyundai i10 Kappa is the fastest accelerating petrol hatch to 100kmph under 5lakhs then you’ll definitely wouldn’t haven’t predicted that the i20 is the fastest diesel hatchback in India. The i20 is thought of as a practical car for families which provides good space but has never been on the radar of those with a need for speed. What is surprising though is the fact that the i20 is faster to 100kmph than the Maruti Suzuki Swift. Hyundai had given this hatch a facelift earlier this year and prices for the diesel i20 start from Rs 6.92lakhs to Rs8.66lakhs ex-showroom New Delhi.

2014 Hyundai i20 WRC

2014 Hyundai i20 WRC

Hyundai at the ongoing Paris Motor Show has revealed the i20 WRC car which would mark the manufacturers return to the championship. This isn’t the first time that Hyundai would be entering WRC and the Korean manufacturer ran the Accent sedan from 2000 up to 2003. But unlike the Accent which was developed by a British firm Motor Sort Developments, the i20 WRC has been developed completely in-house from scratch. While Hyundai is expected to take part in some events next season more as a process of evaluating and further developing their car, a full WRC programme is expected only by 2014. Speaking on the occasion of unveiling of the i20 WRC hatch at the Paris Motor Show, Mark Hall, Hyundai Motor Europe’s Managing Director, said, "The World Rally Championship is recognised as one of the most dramatic sporting series on earth," he explained. "It’s a spectacle filled with excitement and dynamism - the perfect embodiment of the Hyundai brand. Our participation will demonstrate Hyundai’s engineering excellence and durability, and will also help to enhance our passenger vehicles in the future." “The World Rally Championship provides the most technically diverse challenge for an automotive manufacturer. By taking part we want to demonstrate Hyundai’s engineering excellence and durability, and improve our future models,” he added.

2012 Hyundai i20 1.2

Until recently, a new model from Hyundai didn’t give manufacturers sleepless nights. Things though have changed dramatically since then and in India and internationally Hyundai has come into its own as an automobile manufacturer. It has been bringing out increasingly competent offerings and no longer sits in the basement position in the market. The i20 was one such car that propelled Hyundai into the limelight. Hyundai at first didn’t have big plans for the i20 when it launched the hatch in India. India was only going to be the manufacturing hub to export the i20. The response to the i20 in India however changed things dramatically and the manufacturer has now launched the facelift version of the i20. The supermini retains Hyundai’s tried and tested virtues of a modern design, frugal engines, a generous standard kit and safety. Prices for the i20 start from Rs4,73,400 to Rs7,67,405 for the petrol variants and Rs5,96,334 to Rs7,44,012 for the diesel variant ex-showroom New Delhi.

Competition in the premium hatchback segment heats up but the i20 is still going strong

Not too long ago hatchbacks were considered cheaper alternatives to sedans. You bought a hatchback because either you couldn’t afford a sedan or because it made more sense to drive a more compact car in the city. But those days are far behind and the premium hatchback age is well on its way. While it was the Maruti Suzuki Swift which set the ball rolling, the Hyundai i20 moved this segment into a whole new direction. The i20 was a complete departure from the boring Santro and the age old Accent, it was stylish style and sensible. With prices starting from Rs4,63,753 to Rs8,23,664 ex-showroom New Delhi for the diesel and petrol options, the i20 still forms a good option when considering a premium hatchback.
