A Fresh new design and lot of Hyundai’s new technology has been added to this Crossover
Hyundai had released a teaser image of their soon to be launched Kona SUV a few weeks ago. Now after almost few weeks Hyundai finally took the covers off the much-awaited sub -compact SUV Kona. This new Sub-compact will join some other SUVs of the Hyundai lineup which includes Grand Santa Fe, Santa Fe and the Tucson. The Kona is expected to adopt Hyundai’s new design language and will also be the auto manufacturers first B-segment SUV to launch in 2017. According to Hyundai, this SUV will create a unique proposition in the sub-compact SUV segment.
The name Kona has derived from the Kona district on the Big Island of Hawaii. The compact SUV will be positioned below the Tucson and Santa Fe in their SUV lineup, and there is a fair possibility of it launching in the Indian market towards the end of this year or early 2018. Some reports state that the upcoming Hyundai Kona compact SUV will share lots of its components with the new Elite i20. The Kona SUV will take on the Ford Ecosport, Mahindra TUV300 and some other small SUV’s when it finally launches here.
The Kona SUV underpins the companies B-Platform and has a new and distinct styling which sets it apart from the rest of the Hyundai SUV’s. Now this particular SUV has been designed for the markets of Europe and US, however, we do feel that Hyundai surely has plans to launch it in the Indian market as well soon.

The Kona sub-Compact SUV is something that you did not expect from a manufacturer like Hyundai. It continues with Hyundai’s new design identity but adds a progressive character at the same time. The SUV with its modern design and premium features has been aimed to attract new customers.
Towards the front, the SUV gets LED daytime running lamps positioned on top of the LED headlamps which are integrated into the claddings. The Kona gets a modern looking typical Cascading Hyundai grille which takes mesh pattern. The Sub-compact SUV’s small and agile character is further exaggerated by the by the sleek profile with short rear overhangs and wing type fenders which suggest forward directions. The roof rack positioned on top of the roof gives a feeling that this car has been made for an active lifestyle lovers. The Kona also gets silver matte accents placed towards the fog lights and lower air intakes area which helps in highlighting the refined character of the vehicle. Hyundai has also used air curtains which assist in reducing turbulences in the wheel arch area.
Just like the front area the rear profile of the Kona SUV gets a wrap around claddings which houses the indicator and reversing lights. The rear spoiler of this SUV features a LED brake lights as well. To give this compact car proper raised and strong stance, Hyundai has provided 18-inch two-tone alloy wheels while it also gets a 17" alloy wheels as well as 16-inch alloy and steel wheels. Hyundai is also offering a total of ten exterior colours combined with two roof designs with this SUV.

The interior of this new SUV looks modern and well equipped. To begin with, the sub-compact SUV offers different colour themes inside the cabin which allows the owners to customise and choose their combination. The colour accents are featured around the air vents, gearshift, the engine start button ring, that Is not all these themes is then also continued to the seats stitching, and on the steering wheel as well. All the colour options come with a black ceiling.
The smooth contoured dashboard surfaces on top of the dash and dark painted surfaces go will with the contrasting colour combinations. Regarding equipment, the KONA SUV will get a floating screen of the optional eight-inch navigation touchscreen while the standard variant gets a 5.0 inch TFT screen. For the first time, Hyundai has offered a head-up display (HUD) which projects relevant driving information directly to the driver’s line of sight. This infotainment system comes integrated with navigation, media and connectivity features and the way it has been positioned helps the driver to stay entirely focused on the traffic. The climate and temperature control is also placed ergonomically on the central console. The SUV can accommodate upto five passengers inside and offers plenty of cubby holes and storage spaces including 1.5-litre bottle holders in the doors. The rear seat can also be folded in 60:40 proportions. The 361 Litre boot can further be expanded till 1,143 litres by folding the seats.

The KONA SUV gets a total of three downsized turbocharged engines which will boost driving performance while also taking care of the overall fuel efficiency at the same time. The petrol variant of the SUV gets an option of a powerful 1.6 Litre T-GDI four-cylinder turbo unit which is capable of producing about 177 Ps of peak power and 256 Nm of torque. This engine is paired to a smooth-shifting 7DCT transmission which sends power to the four wheel of the vehicle. For those who are looking out for a more economical engine can always opt for the 1.0-liter T-GDI 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol unit which is capable of producing about 120 Ps of peak power and 172 Nm of torque. This economic engine is offered only with front-wheel drive and a choice of only 6-speed manual transmission.
The diesel variant o0n the other hand gets newly developed, efficient 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbocharged unit available in two states of tune. The base unit generates about 115 Ps of peak power and is available only with front-wheel drive and an option of a 6-speed manual transmission. The more powerful unit is capable of producing about 136 Ps of peak power and 320 Nm of torque. This unit is paired to a 7DCT transmission and gets a choice between both four-wheel as well as front wheel drive.

RIDE AND HANDLING
Hyundai has developed a new suspension setup for Kona SUV, it got a McPherson strut in the front and coupled torsion beam axle in the rear for the two-wheel drive variant while the four-wheel option gets to feature a multi-link rear suspension which has been optimised for better ride and handling.
The Kona, also features a strong, light body which enhances not only driving pleasure but also increases passive passenger safety. It further also gets latest active safety features which include Autonomous Emergency Braking with pedestrian detection, Lane Keeping Assist (standard), High Beam Assist, Driver Attention Alert (standard), Blind Spot Detection and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. It also gets a total of six airbags on the inside (two front airbags, two side airbags and two curtain airbags from first to the second row protecting both driver and passengers).
There are no words on the India launch yet but if it does this SUV will compete with the likes of the Ford Ecosport, Mahindra TUV300 and the Nuvosport and thus expect the pricing to be somewhere near the INR.7-10 Lakhs rupee mark.
The Kona SUV surely looks a stunner and gets all the modern features and amnesties that one can expect from a modern day car. Although this car has been targeted mostly for the markets of Europe and US there is no doubt in the fact if Hyundai decides to bring it in India this can be the game changer for the Automaker.
