2015 Hyundai Creta
The Korean auto manufacturer in India Hyundai has been doing well lately in India with some of their latest products like the Elite i20, or the Eon and even the Grand i10. The company has a lot of offerings to counter-attack almost every segment available in the market today. Yet the Korean auto manufacturer has been missing from one of the most competitive segment of compact sports utility vehicles (SUVs) of the country which already has plenty of options available including the Duster, Ecosport and Terrano and also the soon to be launched Maruti S-Cross.
Thus taking this in account seriously, Hyundai lifted the covers from their latest iteration the ix25 at the 2014, Beijing Auto show and decided to launch it in the Indian market. The ix25 concept is based on the bigger sibling ix35 or Hyundai Tucson as known in many different markets around the world and provides a gateway to enter the segment where demands are brimming with each passing day. Currently the vehicle revealed is only made available in the sprouting Chinese market where the demand of such products is going beyond imagination but it was clear that Hyundai will surely target Indian market as well and recently after a lot of testing it was finally revealed in the Indian market. Hyundai also revealed the name of the compact SUV and this SUV will be called the ‘Creta’ which also happens to be the largest Greek Island situated in the Mediterranean Sea.
Surely, this new SUV looks good and also will be made available with the choices of single petrol and 2 diesel engine options, besides being fuel efficient the Creta drivetrain are also powerful as well. For driving pleasure it also gets an automatic transmission beside the manual transmission.
The only thing which is bit disappointing is the fact that the new Creta is only offered with front wheel drive.

The Creta is sculpted following the Korean giant’s latest design philosophy Fluidic Sculpture 2.0, which is lot less fluidic compared to the last generation of design and has added creases on the body to provide strong and more muscular feeling.
The Creta’s styling has been heavily inspired from the bigger ix35 SUV, the sharp swooping headlamps with daytime running lamps (DRLs) placed towards the lower side of the headlamp fills the space on either side of newly designed hexagonal shaped chrome grille which also holds the Hyundai logo in the middle and helps in creating a dynamic view of the vehicle from front. While the two large air dams on either side fills up the empty space and the integrated bumper design with a strong line dividing the upper and lower portion makes the vehicle appear smart, the china spec SUV also has integrated fog lamps placed in the lower bumper area. The lower body cladding forms a strong base around the vehicle. With black base and chrome colored highlights helps in giving the ix25 look rugged, it continues to from a ring around the vehicle which also makes the vehicle look very well-proportioned and helps in reducing the overall mass.
Towards the side profile the Creta will comes with an impressive ground clearance of 190 mm and also big wheels to give this compact vehicle a proper SUV like feel. While you can also notice the muscular wheel arches towards the front and rear which also adds character to the compact SUV.
Towards the rear the broad C pillar might interfere a little and block the proper view of those sitting at the rear seat which is also the problem with Hyundai’s many other hatches including the Eon. While towards the rear you will notice the split taillamps and the tailgate with the fluidic sculpture type design while the roof spoiler and the presence of Black elements in the rear bumper makes the rear profile of the SUV appear sporty.
The Hyundai Creta looks like a smaller version of the Korean auto manufacturers only SUV offering in India the Santa Fe and although it may not look as muscular as the bigger Santa Fe but it surely looks attractive and more like an urban SUV.
|Ground Clearnce||190 mm|
Just like every other Hyundai product the Creta’s interior too looks premium and quite upmarket. The dashboard in particular appears simple with the silver accents and the premium 7 inch touchscreen system available with the top end SX (O) trim, while just on the lower half of the dash you will find the climate control knobs which looks a lot similar to the newly launched Elite i20. Just beside the steering wheel you will find the push button start which too is available only with the top end trim, while the audio controls are also available on the steering wheel.
The Creta offers an impressive leg room for the rear seat passengers, the seats in particular looks comfortable too. However we do feel that the window angle is positioned a little higher than usual which might cause a bit of problem for the rear seat occupants. When it comes to features surely the Creta won’t disappoint anyone because even the base variant also gets rear AC vents, remote locking, a 4 speaker audio system. The top end SX (O) variant on the other hand enjoys from some exciting features like leather seat upholstery, keyless entry and go and 7 inch touchscreen system which also gets navigation system and helps by activating the rear view camera when the SUV is reversed.
The Hyundai Creta as promised is launched with an option of a single petrol and 2 diesel engine options which include 1.6 Litre petrol and the 1.4 Litre and the 1.6 Litre diesel unit. Let’s come to the figures now.
The 1.6 Litre dual VTVT petrol unit produces about 123 Ps of peak power at 6400 rpm and 151 Nm of torque at 4850 rpm, the engine has been mated to a 6 speed manual transmission which send power to the front wheels. The 1.6 Litre petrol unit promise to return an ARAI certified fuel efficiency figures of 15.29 kmpl. The 1.4 Litre CRDi base diesel unit produces about 90 Ps of peak power at 4000 rpm and 220 NM of torque in between 2200-2400 rpm. The engine comes paired to a 6 speed manual transmission just like the petrol variant, this engine promises to return an ARAI rated fuel efficiency figure of 21.38 kmpl.
The last and the most powerful engine on offer is the 1.6 LItre CRDi unit which produces about 128 Ps of peak power at 4000 rpm and 259 Nm of torque in between 1900-2750 rpm, this is the only engine in the lineup which is offered with both 6 speed manual as well as an automatic transmission. The ARAI certified fuel efficiency figures are as follows the manual transmission variant promises 19.67 kmkpl while the automatic variant promises 17.01 kmpl.
When it comes to safety for the first time Hyundai does not wanted to take any chances at all and as a result the Creta comes with ‘Hive Structure’ which actually offers a robust but lightweight body structure which also provides strength and rigidity. Apart from that the Creta also comes with six airbags, ABS, EBD and HAC (Hill Ascent Control). The best thing is that all the variants of the Creta gets ABS and EBD as standard feature while the top end SX (O) variant gets 6 airbags as standard.

EcoSport launched last year in the market and created great waves in the market. The EcoSport booking crossed every record and the demand swelled so much that Ford could not meet the demands of market and the waiting period extended till many months. The EcoSport is powered by three engine options in India, the EcoBoost 1.0 liter engine is the most popular one with a power output of 125 PS. The 1.5 Liter petrol unit produces 112 PS of maximum power and 1.5 diesel engine spews a power of 91 PS.
The Duster has really done wonders for the French car maker Renault in India. Recently they have even launched the 4X4 variant of the SUV although under the hood its the same old story. The Duster gets the 1.6-litre petrol motor churns out 102.5bhp of maximum power and the 1.5-litre K9K diesel engine generates 84bhp of maximum power.
The Creta definitely does not disappoint in terms of looks, interior as well as engine because this compact SUV definitely looks like a smaller version of the Santa Fe SUV, when it comes to interiors definitely the new Creta won’t disappoint because it gets the best of Hyundai’s new and developed interior with plenty of equipments to leave even some premium cars to shame. As far as their drivetrains are concerned both the diesel as well as petrol variant promises to offer plenty of power and torque figures while also returning an impressive fuel efficiency at the same time.
Overall this is definitely a tad bit expensive that the other compact SUV’s offered in the Indian market but it also brings with its lots of goodies which are definitely nopt available with other compact SUV’s of its segment.
