Slowly but surely, the compact sedan segment is getting crowed as more manufacturers enter the fray. Hyundai today launched a new model in this ever growing segment. The market is nothing short of lucrative and Hyundai- the prime rivals of India’s largest car makers at Maruti Suzuki want to have piece of the action.

Hyundai has retired its ageing Accent and the void left by the popular mid-sizer of its time will be filled by the Xcent. Yes, it is called the Hyundai Xcent which was launched today at an very lucrative price. The Xcent is a compact sedan based on the recently launched Grand i10. The car was showcased ahead of the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo.

There is certainly a lot of excitement among folks and we could be looking at a sure-shot success story here. The Hyundai Xcent compact sedan will share its internals with the Grand i10 hatchback. A 1.2-liter petrol and 1.1-liter diesel is set to adorn the new Xcent. Hyundai will offer the car with the option of an automatic gearbox or a 5-speed manual.

Expect a similar kind of kit as standard proving it to be good value. Pricing too will be highly competitive especially since it faces competition from Maruti Suzuki Dzire and popular models like the Honda Amaze.

On the outside, the Hyundai Xcent resembles the hatchback it is based on. That said, the rear is where most of the changes have been made. The addition of an extended trunk means there are new tail lamps. Unlike, the Dzire which seems plain jane compared to the Hyundai, the Xcent boasts of its "fluidic" design language and stands out among the crowd.

The new Hyundai Xcent also has the biggest trunk in its segment. Also, the boot does not look out of place on this car as it blends in nicely with Grand i10 based design. Other than that, there isn’t much to report about the exterior as everything from the front fascia to the rear doors is the same as the hatchback.

Inside, it’s the same story. Almost all the bits are from the Grand i10 and even though we have seen this interior styling before, it is pretty descent quality and is well put together. The two-tone interior does add a sense of roominess to the cabin.

The plastics are of premium quality which enhance the driving experience. The center console is simple and is divided into two distinct parts. The upper section houses the audio system which comes with USB connectivity with small display screen in the center. HVAC controls are provided in the lower part of the console.

The steering wheel is a multi-functional unit, same as the Grand i10. The instrument binnacle is simple and clear with a large speedometer with a blue back light in the center and a tachometer on one side. Fuel gauge and temperature gauges take up the right hand side of the unit.

The cabin of the new Hyundai Xcent feels airy and has a premium feel to it. There’s loads of headroom thanks to the tall profile of the car. It boasts of decent legroom for rear seat passengers and is claimed to have the largest trunk in the segment. Another ’segment first’ is the rear air conditioning vent.

There are few additional features which are available with the Xcent sedan for example the top of the line SX variant gets automatic climate control and a rear-view camera. Steering-mounted audio controls, an audio system with Aux, USB, Bluetooth and 1GB of internal storage. The top SX trims also gets 14 inch wheels as standard but it also gets an option to upgrade to a 15-inch ’diamond cut’ alloys as well.

Hyundai will offer one petrol and a diesel engine on the Xcent. These are the same engines that are available on the Grand i10 and in the same state of tune. Hence, the 1.2-liter kappa petrol develops 83 PS of peak power at 6000 rpm. Torque on the other hand is rated at 114 Nm which available at 4000 rpm.

The diesel engine on offer is the 1.1-liter U2 second generation CRDi. This power house generates 71 PS and is good for 160 Nm of torque. Peak torque is available across a wide rev range, right from 1500 rpm to 2750 rpm. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard while the petrol can be had with a 4-speed automatic.

Suspension is composed of McPherson struts upfront and coupled torsion beam axle at the rear. The braking system on this car includes discs at the front and drums for the rear axles.

Maruti Suzuki Dzire

Maruti Suzuki is the benchmark in the sub-4 meter compact sedan segment. Powered by a 1.2-liter petrol and a 1.3-liter diesel, the Dzire enjoys the loyalty of a large customer base.

The updated styling of the Dzire has gotten rid of it bulbous trunk which makes it look just right. That said, it a very common sight on Indian roads and that could be one reason why folks might want to explore new options.

The 1.2-liter K-Series petrol engine is capable of producing 85 PS at 6000 rpm and max torque of 113 Nm at 4600 rpm. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic, much like the Hyundai. The diesel on the other hand is the same Fiat-sourced unit with a 1.3-liter capacity producing 75 PS at 4000 rpm and 190 Nm at 2000 rpm of peak torque.

It isn’t the most feature-packed of the lot, but it still gets tilt-adjustable steering column, automatic climate control, audio player with Aux-in and USB, cup holders, etc.

Honda Amaze

The Hyundai Xcent is based on the Grand i10 and in the same way, the Honda Amaze borrows its underpinnings from the Brio hatchback. Yes, the Brio looks small compared to the Grand i10, but it is rather spacious on the inside.

The philosophy behind the Amaze is similar. The exterior is indifferent from the Brio apart from a few detail elements. The grille for instance is different, the sickle lines along the sides though have been retained. The interior too is the same as the hatchback it is based on.

As far as the engine options are concerned, the Honda Amaze gets 1.2-liter i-VTEC petrol engine that puts out 88 PS at 6000 rpm and 109 Nm at 4500 rpm. Honda’s brand new diesel is nothing short of a peach. The 1.5-liter i-DTEC makes 100 PS of peak power at 3600 rpm and 200 Nm at 1750 rpm.

Another advantage of the Amaze over its rivals is its gearbox. The 5-speed manual is standard on both petrol and diesel versions. The automatic however gets an extra 5th ratio and is only available on the petrol model. The Hyundai Xcent and Maruti Dzire only get a 4-speed automatic.

The Hyundai Xcent certainly has loads of features to woo customers to the brand. Like most Hyundai models, the Xcent seems like a no-brainer when choosing between compact, value-for-money sedans. The build quality and feel is much better than the corresponding Maruti Suzuki.

The 4-speed automatic is an issue but seems well suited for the engine underneath. The Honda Amaze is a better drive though, courtesy of that extra ratio.

  • * Diesel lacks the punch of the Honda i-DTEC
  • * 4-speed automatic gearbox could affect fuel economy
