Guwahati High Court revokes ban on small cars

Guwahati High Court revokes ban on small cars

Guwahati High Court finally revokes ban on small cars after the verdict initiated controversy. In its latest verdict Guwahati High Court has allowed sales of small passenger cars under the 1500 kg category, but only those cars will be allowed for sales which meet the crash test and emission norm of government.

A few days earlier, Guwahati High Court gave verdict to stop registration and sale of 140 models in total which were less than 1500 kg, due to safety norms. These models included cars like Hyundai i10, Hyundai EON, Honda Jazz, Maruti Suzuki Swift, Maruti Suzuki Alto etc. Due to this verdict sales of small passenger cars were heavily affected in the north eastern states like Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh, the sales figure dropped to almost 60%. Incidentally, Assam is the largest market for small passenger cars in north east India with a selling number of small cars reaching nearly 5000 units every month, which came to a dead stop all of a sudden after the verdict.

After this, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) immediately filed a petition challenging the decision of Assam state transport department which led to the ban. SIAM also stated in the petition, that all the small cars sold in the country are certified and have passed all crash test, emission and other mandatory regulations, which are prescribed by the Motor Vehicles Act of India and these cars have been tested by the authorities like the Automotive Research Association of India. They claimed, therefore these cars come perfectly meeting the safety norms, and there is no valid ground to ban the registration and sale of these cars, which ultimately resulted Gauhati High Court revoked the ban today.

Honda Jazz gains popularity over City and Amaze

Recently launched Honda Jazz new avatar seems doing quite well and upto Honda’s expectation, as the sales figure for luxury hatchback Honda Jazz beats City and Amaze with a large margin in July 2015 sales report.

In July 2015 Honda sold 6676 units of Jazz, while the sales figure for City and Amaze is 5180 and 4589 respectively. Practically, three of these cars proved Honda’s prime selling car, as they sold a total of 18606 numbers of cars in Indian domestic markets, while the export figure is 614, and with that the total number of sales for Honda is 19220 in July 2015, which is an 18% growth than the same period previous year. Although in its first innings Jazz was simply dull, but during the second innings it has grabbed the eyes and took the hearts away. While Jazz showed a new way to the automobile manufacturer the sales figure of Honda MPV Mobilio is declining gradually, as Honda sold only 909 numbers of Mobilio. While the new generation CR-V and upcoming BR-V is talk of the town, the remaining old CR-V is a real disappointment for Honda, as it sold only 130 units of CR-V. In terms of selling figure Honda also came up one step ahead and beat Mahindra & Mahindra, to become the third largest auto maker of this country. Mahindra sold a total number of 14556 vehicles in July 2015, and Honda officials believe this success came just because of the revamped Jazz.

The hatchback which will be launched in the Indian market is a new model and has been built from scratch however take a first look and you will instantly realize that it is definitely the Jazz. The modern Jazz takes some styling cues from Honda’s modern styling dictionary though and quite honestly it looks stylish as well as sporty at the same time and definitely way more practical. Lets us also inform you that the Jazz also happens to be the most spacious car in its segment and provides ample of room for all the five occupants inside. Honda will be offering the Jazz with both diesel and petrol variants which will come mated with both automatic as well as manual transmission option from its launch.

Upcoming Honda Jazz Gets Five Star Safety Rating

Yes! We all are excited about the soon to be launched premium hatchback from Honda the Jazz which will take on the Hyundai Elite i20 directly. Recently the Jazz which is already sold in the Australian market has gone through rigorous safety tests conducted by ANCAP (Australian New Car Assessment Program) and believe it or not it has passed the Safety test with flying colors and scoring five-star safety rating.

ANCAP who has been conducting such crash test for the past 15 years with its European Counterpart EURO NCAP has provided 5 star safety rating to the current generation hatch which has been sold across the World. Now the Jazz which has gone through this tough test was equipped with electronic stability control (ESC), electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), emergency brake assist (EBA), reversing collision avoidance (camera) and emergency stop signal (ESS) as standard along with 6 airbags. Don’t get too excited because we are still not sure how much of these safety features will be carried over to the Indian variant of the Jazz. The ANCAP conducted this test on the Jazz hatchback along with the help of ANCAP’s sister program, ASEAN NCAP in Malaysia and both these bodies are working together for the past few years.

Honda Jazz was able to score a total score of 36.58 out of a possible 37 which is considered a very impressive score in total. Honda Jazz will be launched soon in the Indian market and it will share its drivetrain with the Amaze compact sedan which means that the Jazz will receive a 1.2 Litre petrol engine under the hood while the diesel variant will be powered by a 1.5 Litre unit. The upcoming Jazz hatchback will be powered by a 1.2 Litre petrol unit which produces about 88 Ps of peak power and 109 Nm of torque while Honda will install their only diesel unit on offer under the hood of their upcoming hatch as already mentioned above. The 1.5 Litre diesel unit produces about 100 HP of peak power and 200 NM of torque and you have also seen it perform under the hood of the Amaze compact sedan and the City. There are also rumors that Honda might also equip the upcoming Jazz Petrol unit with CVT transmission which will also get the paddle shifters.

Honda Jazz Launch Delayed Again! Launch In July 2015

It was rumored that Honda will be launching their premium hatchback Jazz this year after they discontinued it in the year 2013 but it seems that the Jazz launch has been delayed. According to the report on Economic Times Honda will be launching their Jazz hatch in India during the month of July 2015 finally and according to close Honda sources the Jazz perhaps will be the Japanese manufacturers only launch during the New Year.

Jnaneswar Sen, senior vice-president for sales & marketing at Honda Cars India, confirmed to Economic Times that they will relaunch the Jazz in the Indian market but declined to share further details about the upcoming hatchback. He also includes that "We would like maintain the current volumes while expect to get incremental volume with re-entry into premium hatch category".

Expect the new Jazz to be more fuel efficient and will be launched with both diesel and petrol engine options under the hood. The petrol variant will be powered by a 1.2-liter i-VTEC while expect the 1.5-liter i-DTEC to power the diesel variant. Both these are the same engine which does duty under the hood of the Amaze compact sedan which is quite popular in the Indian market. The 1.2 Liter I-VTEC generates about 88 Ps of peak power while the 1.5 Litre Diesel generates about 100 Ps of peak power.

The Jazz definitely has received some cosmetic upgrades as well on its exterior while it will also receive some updated features inside too. Perhaps the delay is because of the fact that both Honda’s production facilities in Greater Noida and Tapukara are occupied and working on their full capacity to produce and meet the demands of City and Mobilio MPV.

Honda Fit (Jazz) introduced in NAIAS

Honda introduced the new Fit which is known as Jazz in our Indian market at the 2014 North American International Auto Show; the Fit will go on sale in the US market from spring onward. This will also be the first time when the 2015 Fit will be manufactured in North America at the new Celaya, Mexico plant.

Honda also has plans of introducing the new Fit in our Indian market this year. There are many new features which are installed in this new car. Although this is a hatchback but it definitely is bigger than the rest of the hatches out here in India and thus provides more room in its interior. The new Jazz now comes with a new refreshed cabin which has many new features like push-button start, 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen interface, Bluetooth connectivity, heated side mirrors and front seats and Honda’s exclusive LaneWatch but all these new features will perhaps only be available with the top end variant of the vehicle.

Honda claims that this new car is more fuel efficient and is much more fun to drive, the Honda Fit is powered by an all-new direct-injected 1.5-liter DOHC i-VTEC engine which generates 128 Hp of maximum power at 6500 rpm and 114 lb.-ft. of torque at 4600 rpm, the engine has been mated to a new 6 speed manual transmission but it will also get a CVT gearbox. We will perhaps get a smaller engine for our Indian market and maybe Honda will also introduce a Diesel engine later in the new Jazz.

The Japanese Auto manufacturer will also adopt many costs cutting methods to price the new Jazz competitively in our Indian market but don’t get too excited because still the new Jazz won’t come cheap, It can be expected that the base version of the hatch will be priced somewhere around 6 Lakh rupees.

Our pick of India's most value for money cars

All these 5 cars haven’t been amongst the best selling in their segment but their sales figures don’t reflect their true potential. The 3 hatchbacks, the Utility Vehicle and the luxury sedan in the list are all worth a look if you are looking to lighten your bank balance before New Year’s.

2013 Honda Jazz. Diesel engine a near certainty

2013 Honda Jazz. Diesel engine a near certainty

Most motoring journalists would be of the opinion that the Honda Jazz is the best petrol hatch in the country. The styling, interior space, passenger comfort, engine refinement and efficiency and the ride and handling, all are the best in the segment. After Honda reduced the prices of the Jazz in 2011, sales of the hatch did pick up but then because of the floods in Thailand production was severely affected and Honda couldn’t keep up with the demand which put off a lot of buyers. Lack of a diesel engine too didn’t work in the favour of the Jazz. If reports circulating are to be believed, the 2013 Jazz will come with a diesel engine and this would equip the hatch to take on the hugely popular Volkswagen Polo and the Hyundai i20.

2009 Honda Jazz

2009 Honda Jazz

Launched in 2009, the Honda Jazz was irrelevant to the Indian buyer because of its pricing. With the top-of the line variant costing over 8lakhs, for a hatchback this was stratospheric amount to spend. The Jazz had received rave reviews but in a price sensitive market like ours, no matter how well equipped and engineered a hatchback is, if it costs more than a mid segment sedan, its being really optimistic to think that it would sell reasonable numbers. Honda now has tried to correct its pricing blunder by reducing the price of the Jazz by over Rs 1.5lakhs and giving it an interior and exterior facelift. With prices starting from Rs 5, 50,000 to Rs6, 06,000 ex-showroom New Delhi, is the Jazz the best premium hatchback in the country?
