Ford Motor Company might be one of the largest and oldest players in the world automotive arena, but in India the company has been struggling to get a strong grip of the market. Now inspired with the recent success the company is planning to introduce the Ford Fiesta premium hatchback, which will be positioned above the Ford Figo. 2014 Ford Fiesta VS Its Rivals

2014 Ford Fiesta VS Its Rivals

Ford launched the 2014 Fiesta in order to get their hand on the under 10 Lakh sedan segment of India. The new Fiesta was launched only with a diesel engine option and thus it faces some tough competition from other segment rivals namely the Fiat Linea, Hyundai Verrna the popular Honda City and the Volkswagen vento and its cousin the Skoda Rapid.

In terms of looks Ford has made minor but striking changes to the Fiesta’s exterior and as a result the facelift Fiesta looks more aggressive and modern in every sense. While talking about its rivals exterior styling, all of them surely are not beauty pageant winners but when it comes to impressing the crowd these sedans does that job pretty well, especially Hyundai with its new Fludic sculpture and Fiat Linea with its classy looks.

As far as their interior comfort are concerned we have heard in the past that Fiesta’s rear seat may not be the most comfortable space for spending time because it lacks sufficient leg room and the seats in particular lacks underthigh support unfortunately the new Fiesta rear seats are carried over from its predecessor and as a result of that it still remains perhaps the most uncomfortable amongst its segment. But then the new Fiesta definitely does score with its interior quality of materials, finish and also the equipment list.

There are plenty more information available for you in this comparison review so go through them and hopefully it will clear the doubts of all those readers who want to get their hands on a sedan priced well under the INR 10 lakh bracket.

2014 Ford Fiesta

2014 Ford Fiesta

Perhaps the Ford Fiesta sedan is the most neglected car in the Indian market, it has been here in the Indian market for quite some time now but there are no potential buyers for this particular car. Ford tried many ways to make this car attractive but somehow all their effort went in vain.As far as the American auto giant Ford is concerned they came back with a bang with the launch of the Ecosport in the year 2013, and since then there was no turning back for Ford, the Ecosport compact SUV was so popular amongst the Indian crowd that the waiting period for this car almost reached 6 months.

Now, Ford also wants a fare share over the sedan market and that is the reason why they will soon launch the new Fiesta which comes with exciting new looks, more interior features and lastly a tweaked engine which delivers even more power now. When the Fiesta will be launched in the Indian market it will compete directly with the segment leading Honda City and the Hyundai Verna, so you can already guess that the competition is intense in this particular segment. But unlike its rivals Ford decided to launch their new sedan with only one diesel engine option for the Indian market which is bit disappointing for those who loves the thrill and excitement of driving a petrol engine sedan.

The new Fiesta sedan will be available with only 1.5-liter four-cylinder diesel unit which delivers more power now but unfortunately comes mated with a 5 speed manual transmission only. So you won’t be getting an automatic transmission with this car either. But don’t get disappointed right now because there are plenty of new things Ford has done to make this car a worthy competitor to its rival so let’s find out what else is new in this car.

UPDATE 19/06/14: Ford launched the Fiesta in India today with prices starting at 7.69 Lakhs (ex showroom Delhi). The rest o the prices and variants has been updated below.

New Ford Fiesta facelift caught testing in India

New Ford Fiesta facelift caught testing in India

Ford has given the new Fiesta sedan a mid-life facelift and will be launching it in India soon. The Fiesta facelift was showcased at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo, grabbing attention of show-goers thanks to its almost Aston Martin like front grille.

The new trapezoidal grille has become a Ford corporate identity in recent times. Along with the Fiesta, rest of the Ford model range too has been given this cheeky front grille. The Ford Mondeo and recently, the Ford Focus received a makeover.

Now, Ford is all set to launch the new Fiesta in India. The company has promised to offer loads of features and unique creature comforts this time around. Some benchmark features that will make it onto the new Fiesta include the Emergency Assist System that made its debut on the EcoSport, automatic wipers and headlights and a dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The new Fiesta has just been spotted doing its usual pre-launch testing. It has already proven its road-worthiness with a 1.5-liter diesel and a similar capacity petrol engine on board. The Fiesta, though expensive, is one of the best handling cars in the segment. The engine too is rather special and we at Topspeed.in love it.

Ford to reduce prices of their Classic saloon

Ford to reduce prices of their Classic saloon

Ford only recently hiked the prices of their compact SUV Ecosport by a fair margin and now they have decided to reduce the prices of their Classic saloon which is basically the previous generation Ford Fiesta. Ford has taken this aggressive step to compete with the other entry level saloons of its class.

There is no doubt that the Classic is a worthy and tough competitor but its styling looks a bit backdated when compared to the modern generation entry level saloons like Honda Amaze or the Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire. The Classic saloon was launched way back in the year 2005 and since then there has been no such major changes made to the vehicle and now with the increased competition and competitive pricing people have lots of other options in their hand to choose from. So in order to exist in this competitive market and increase its sales figures, Ford has slashed the prices of their Classic saloon and reports says that the prices of the base variant Petrol variant will start from Rs.5 lakh onward which will be effective from this month end onward (Present base variant prices starts from Rs.564,999.00 ex-showroom Delhi) and will go upto Rs.7.5 Lakhs for the top end Diesel variant.

At present the Classic sedan is offered with three trims namely LXi, CLXi and Titanium being the top end trim and with 1.6 Liter Duratec petrol and 1.4 liter diesel engine. The 1.6 Liter Petrol engine generates 101 Ps of maximum power at 6500 RPM and 146 NM of torque at 3400 RPM while the 1.4 Liter Duratorq diesel engine generates 68 PS of power at 4000 RPM and 160 NM of torque at 2000 RPM. Both the engines use a 5-speed manual gearbox which has slick with short throws.

Ford India Hikes Prices of its Lineup

Ford India Hikes Prices of its Lineup

The economic crunch faced by the Indian market has resulted in the price hike of various commodities, and automobiles are no exception. This tricky situation has compelled Ford India to finally announce a price rise for its line-up, since the input cost too has risen. Ford has increased the prices from 1 to 5 percent, depending on different models, which has come in to effect since 5th September, 2013.

Ford India has not yet disclosed any details regarding the matter. The line-up includes the compact car Figo, the popular sedan car Fiesta and the recently launched and highly popular SUV, the EcoSport.

The company however has revealed that there are many factors that has come into play that forced them to hike the prices like increase in interest rates and the decrease in the value of rupees. The input costs have risen and is expected to keep rising for an indefinite period. Ouch.

Facelifted Ford Fiesta Coming in 2014

Facelifted Ford Fiesta Coming in 2014

With the slump in sales, thanks to its wrong pricing at launch, Ford is planning to launch a facelift for the Fiesta sedan next year with a much better price tag. This sedan is important for Ford if it needs to tap the fierce segment that includes cars like the Honda City, Hyundai Verna etc.

One can expect the facelift to follow suit of the updated Ford Fiesta in Europe. The new design will put the car inline with its international brothers, with features such as an Aston Martin-esque front fascia, re-profiled front bumpers with improved headlamps and new taillights at the rear.

In the powertrain department, the car will feature the same engine line-up. So, people hoping for the fantastic 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine will now have to look at other options. Engines on offer include the 1.5-liter petrol engine that produces 107-horsepower and mated to either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic and a 1.5-liter diesel engine that produces 89-horspower and mated to only a 5-speed manual.

For the new Fiesta, Ford will concentrate on keeping the price low by sourcing parts locally. The target is INR 6.99 Lakh, though we doubt that because of the weak Rupee.

10 most fuel efficient diesel sedans in India

10 most fuel efficient diesel sedans in India

It is a surprise that only one Maruti Suzuki features in our list of the 10 most efficient diesel sedans in India. Even in the diesel hatchback list only two Maruti Suzuki’s featured. It seems like an improbable situation for India’s largest selling passenger car manufacturer to have only three cars in the 20 cars that we have researched on but that’s the fact. Tata however has been the surprise and have the most efficient diesel sedan and hatch and also the most fuel efficient petrol hatch. There are also three cars which use the same engine (the 1.5dCi is used by the Nissan Sunny, Renault Duster and the Mahindra Verito) which is not a surprise and in the hatchback list 6 cars shared the same engine.

Ford gives the Fiesta a facelift for 2013. Sedan in India would get the changes too.

Ford gives the Fiesta a facelift for 2013. Sedan in India would get the changes too.

Ford India was running out of ideas and options back in 2009. The manufacturer was reduced to the sidelines as it watched the Japanese and even the European manufacturers take centre stage. The Fiesta, the Endeavour and all other attempts had failed to get Ford its due that it thought it deserved. The manufacture was then rescued by the Australian engineered Figo which turned things around and the hatch won every conceivable automobile award in our country. Ford had hoped that the success of the Figo would rub off on theFiesta which was launched last year but that hasn’t been the case as the Fiesta because of its poor rear styling and cramped interiors has failed to be the success that Ford has hoped. Though we still await the Fiesta hatch, Ford has given the car a facelift for the 2013 model and these changes could well make it into the Indian Fiesta sedan too next year.

Though we still aren’t sure when the Fiesta hatch will come into India, the sixth-generation Fiesta has a completely revised front end and the car now gets the ‘Aston Martin grille treatment’. The grille seems to have been split into 2 parts with the bottom one being on the bumper and the two grilles form a hexagon shape that we are used to seeing on the Mondeo and the Aston too. There is an all-new front bumper as well and another design feature we particularly liked were the ‘laser-cut’ headlamps with daytime running lamps featuring LED technology. There is also a new bonnet design.

2012 Ford Fiesta Classic Titanium

Ford’s latest attempt in bringing life back to the Fiesta Classic is the Titanium variant which the manufacturer has now introduced. The aging Fiesta was renamed Fiesta Classic last year after Ford introduced the all new Fiesta and with the Titanium variant the manufacturer hopes that their sedan offers the best bargain available on the market because it is loaded with features. Ford is also giving a standard 2 year/1,00,000 km warranty. Speaking at the launch Michael Boneham, President and Managing Director, Ford India said, “We have been listening to our customers to offer a value proposition with smart technologies and best-in-class features with the introduction of the Titanium variant in our Ford Classic range. By bringing in Bluetooth telephony in this segment and integrating eight other outstanding features, we have delivered on our promise to democratize technology and add unmatched value to a reliable, fun-to-drive Ford Classic.” Anurag Malhotra, vice president, marketing told Economic Times, "The entry level sedan segment is doing well and is growing faster than the market at 30-40% per annum. We want to capitalize on the growth in that segment and draw our fair share." The Fiesta Classic Titanium is priced at Rs 6,86,400, for the petrol variant and the Classic Titanium Diesel variant is priced at Rs 7,82,000 ex-showroom, New Delhi.

Ford Fiesta to get 1-litre Ecoboost engine this year

Ford Fiesta to get 1-litre Ecoboost engine this year

The Ford Fiesta could get the highly acclaimed 1-litre Ecoboost engine by the end of the year or early next year. The 1-litre, 3 cylinder Ecoboost petrol engine according to the manufacturer provides the same performance as a 1.6-litre petrol with 15 to 20 percent better fuel consumption. The engine has high pressure direct fuel injection, turbo charging and variable timing and produces 125PS and 170Nm of torque @1400rpm. Acceleration is expected to be brisk and the real USP of the engine will be its fuel efficiency.

The flywheel on the Ecoboost engine has been kept unbalanced to ensure smooth running and the motor includes three tiny pistons with four valves per cylinder, a minute turbocharger and a maintenance-free oil-lubricated camshaft drivebelt. It only weighs 97kgs and another of its strengths is the amount of torque available at low revs. The cylinder block is made of cast iron and not aluminium and this engine would also be seen in the EcoSport compact SUV.

The Fiesta currently comes with a 1.5-litre double overhead cam engine which produces 109PS@ 6045rpm and a peak torque of 140Nm@4500rpm. This engine delivers an ARAI claimed figure of 17kmpl and there is also a 1.5-litre diesel engine that produces 90PS@3750rpm and 204Nm of torque between 2000 to 2750rpm.

2011 Ford Fiesta Automatic

2011 Ford Fiesta Automatic

The premium midsize car segment for good reason is overcrowded and just about every manufacturer serious about making it big in India is present in this segment. When Ford launched the Fiesta last year in the Indian market, the manufacturer had hoped that after the success of the Figo the Fiesta would too be able to cash in on the momentum and ride home the advantage. Ford after all was enjoying its best time yet in India but the Fiesta just didn’t take off and sales have been below mediocre. The advertising campaigns and marketing was strong but the sixth-generation Fiesta which also echoed Ford’s Kinetic Design styling language, failed to build from where the Figo left. Ford has now launched the Fiesta with a dual clutch automatic gearbox, a first in the segment. The ‘PowerShift’ transmission features a dry-clutch setup in a completely sealed unit and Ford claims that the transmission is maintenance-free and good for 2.4 lakh kms or 10 years. Prices for the Fiesta Automatic start from Rs 8.99lakh to Rs 9.70lakh ex-showroom New Delhi.

2005 Ford Fiesta Classic

2005 Ford Fiesta Classic

It’s now become both a habit and tactic for manufacturers in India not to discontinue models even after their newer variants arrive. The older variants, the ones that are replaced internationally, continue to be sold side by side in India. The Hyundai Accent is a two generation old model compared to the Verna Fluid, so is the Santro compared to the i10, same is the case with the Mitsubishi Pajero and Montero and Tata does the same with the Indica and Indigo models. Invariably the older model gets reduced to the entry level of its segment as it has been the case with the original Ford Fiesta which was renamed the Fiesta Classic after the launch of the new model. The Fiesta Classic now is an entry level sedan and since its launch it has sold over 100,000 units. With prices starting from Rs5,50,330 to Rs7,30,000 for the petrol and Rs6,58,300 to Rs8,20,300 for the diesel ex-showroom New Delhi, has age diminished the Fiesta Classic’s shine?

2011 Ford Fiesta

It’s important to make most of the momentum and ride home the advantage when the time is right. Strike while the iron is hot, as they say. Ford is enjoying its best time yet in India with the success of the Figo and with the launch of the Fiesta, Ford would be hoping that the market position that it enjoys will help the Fiesta sell in strong numbers. The American manufacturer has had a strong association with India ever since the launch of the Escort and the Ikon over a decade ago. The Fiesta followed in 2005 and Ford has now launched the sixth-generation Fiesta - the first global Fiesta and India is the fifth country to manufacture the car. This is also the first Fiesta to echo Ford’s Kinetic Design styling language. With prices starting from Rs 9,27,200 to Rs 10,42,200 for the diesel variant and Rs 8,23,500 to Rs 9,42,200 for the petrol variant ex-showroom New Delhi, is the Fiesta good enough to worry the Volkswagen Vento and Hyundai Verna Fluid?
