Why we shouldn’t underestimate Force Gurkha: Video
Indian customers are generally known for their love for SUVs and tough vehicles when it comes to automobiles. In Indian several automakers have been producing and selling SUVs and compact SUVs. While Mahindra and Mahindra has earned the respect from everyone, automaker like Force is yet to impress the customers. Although the Force Motors has introduced the Gurkha SUV way back in 2013, the car couldn’t fetch the automaker desired sales figure.
The Force Gurkha is a really tough off-road capable SUV, but despite coming with huge potential the car couldn’t impress us. The question remains. It is considered that the not so impressive styling and usage of plastic materials in a large amount has played a role behind the cars being not so successful. But we shouldn’t underestimate the Force Gurkha’s capability just because it is not a good looking car. The rugged looking off-roader comes powered by a Mercedes Benz sourced 2.6 litre OM616 turbocharged inter cooled direct injection diesel engine which can generate 82 PS of peak power at 3200 rpm and 230 Nm of peak torque between 1800 to 2000 rpm. The engine comes with a displacement of 2596 cc.
Impressive facts are, this car comes with a 210 mm of ground clearance. It can climb 40 degree slope without much effort and it also has a departure angle of 34 degree. The car can run through 550 mm of water, which is a very essential criterion for being off-roading worthy. The car is equipped with independent, solid torsion bar, hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers and anti-roll bar at the front and semi elliptical leaf spring with hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers and anti roll bar at the rear as suspension set up. This suspension set up equips the car with superior riding quality. So far, the car is a pretty well capable and well equipped off-roader, which we shouldn’t underestimate at all.

In India the concept of adventure trip is growing day by day, that might be to the rugged Himalayan terrains, or through the hilly jungle areas of north Bengal or north east zone or any other adventure tourism spots. And thus come the growing need and popularity of SUVs. Although the compact SUV segment is doing absolutely fine business now a days, but adventure loving people of northern Indian states like Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh generally love a bit rugged looking SUV’s than the sophisticated compact SUVs, that’s because of their macho and masculine nature and has a hardcore offroading gene planted in them.
Recently Mahindra launched their much acclaimed Thar in a new avatar, which is of course not comfortable like any other compact SUVs but, definitely the champion when it comes to executing off road tasks, it also earned the title ‘True Blue’ off roader, which really make it the king of the segment. With the Mahindra Thar in fray, only one vehicle is there give it competition, both as per looks, as well as executing tasks at hand, which is Force Gurkha. The later was launched in 2008 didn’t do much business, but compare to the pricing it came easier option for the people who care for their budget most.
Here we will take a comparative look at both the vehicle in a spec comparison

The Force Gurkha Rainforest Challenge is the only international off the road motorsports event of India which quite popular in Indian motorsports arena. The terminator leg of the competition took place at the Costi village of Goa, and the competitors were tested in various parameters like the articulation of vehicle, competitor’s knowledge about how to use recovery equipments to cross tough hurdles as well as how to use natural surroundings to progress in the competition. The exiting and adventurous motor sports event took place at the off road location of South Goa, like the Prologue leg of the championship, this time the Predator leg was very much competitive with the competitors fighting hard battle. With an overall score of 1444 points Malaysian driver, Tan Eng Joo of Force Motors Team came forward one step to take the top spot with his co driver Tan Choon Hong.

Force Motors is better known for their mini-bus Traveller and other commercial vehicles. They also manufacture the Force One SUV that is powered by a Daimler engine. Now, if recent reports are true, then Force Motors could be setting up a new engine manufacturing plant in Tamil Nadu. They currently assemble Mercedes-Benz engines at their Pune unit. So, what prompted the company to build a brand new facility?
Well, it is believed that Force Motors will build BMW engines under contract from the luxury car maker. Autocar Professional has learned this from a reliable source. Another reason for us to believe that this could be true is the fact that BMW assembles their cars in Chennai which is in Tamil Nadu state. It is a similar case with Mercedes-Benz who produces their cars not far from the Force Motors plant in Pune.
BMW India has not officially confirmed anything yet. Autocar believes that the new Force Motors unit could be up and running by early next year. The project is expected to cost about INR 100 crore. Until the official word arrives, we hope to hear more fresh developments in this regard.
When it comes to SUV manufacturer in India, Mahindra & Mahindra is perhaps the first name that comes to our mind. It is hoped that M&M will soon be challenged by the budding SUV Company, Force Motors. But the company is way too far from reaching the anticipated position as they have not yet launched enough products.
Last year the company had launched Force One EX variant with BS3 engine which is the base trim of the model. On the other hand, the LX trim, the highest of all variants which is driven by a BS4 engine and comes with a 4×4 mechanism has not yet been able to hit Indian road.
The company however seems to have other plans as recently they were spotted testing a new variant of Force One. The spy pictures from Car Torq speak that the variant must be the EX with BS3 engine and 4X4 mechanism and also come with jump seats. The other SUVs from Force One do not have the jump seats but rather have three rows of bench seats with middle captain seats as an added option. But it is speculated that these jump seats from BS3 variant will be able to accommodate a total of 4 adults.
Talking about the exterior of the SUV which looks very muscular, take a closer look and one may even notice the rear mounted spoiler. Under the hood, the BS3 variant shall be storing a 2.6-liter four-cylinder diesel engine that churns out 82 PS of maximum power at 3,200 rpm and 230 Nm of torque at 1,800-2,000 rpm respectively.
Though It is still not clear when the SUV shall hit the showrooms.
Force Motors has launched a new variant Force One EX, a base trim which is now on sale already. This new trim was an addition to its existing Force One SUV line-up at a price tag of 8.89 lakhs. This new SUV has been loaded with a 2596cc direct injection intercooled turbo diesel engine which has been borrowed from the Force Gurkha 4X4, another existing SUV from the Force Motors. This mighty powertrain is mated with a five-speed manual transmission gearbox, but this motor is only BS III compliant and comes with only 2WD. Force Motors with the launch new EX variant targets the fleet and the taxi market of India and thus the basic features like power steering, front fog lamps, A/C and central locking and steel wheels comes as standard in this SUV.
Force Motors will be launching 4WD model very soon and will be named as LX. This yet-to-be launched SUV will be available with all features that are present in the previous top end 2WD trim such as daytime running lamps, rear parking sensors, wing mirrors integrated with turn indicators, 16-inch alloy + all terrain tyres, 2DIN audio system with Bluetooth and steering mounted controls, leather seats, ABS and EBD, remote keyless entry and cruise control, etc. The price of this trim has yet not been revealed by the company.
The present model of 2WD variant of Force One is called as Force One SX and consists of almost all the features of the 4WD model except two features which are: shift-on-the fly 4WD system and the limited slip differential. The SX and the LX trims are loaded with the Mercedes-Benz-sourced 2.2-litre, OM611 common-rail engine which meets the BS IV emissions norms and churns out 139bhp and 32.6kgm of torque like that of Tata Safari. This SUV drives the rear wheels through the Mercedes-Benz G32 five-speed manual gearbox.
The prices of Force One SUVs are as below (ex-showroom, Delhi):
2.5 EX: 7-seater: Rs 8.99 lakh
2.2 SX 6-seater: Rs 11.79 lakh
2.2 SX 7-seater Rs 11.71 lakh
