Most of our readers and are well acquainted with the term ‘Hot hatch’ which is actually shortened version of hot hatchback. For those who don’t, these hatches is actually the more performance oriented variants of their regular body forms.

Honestly, I never thought that I will ever get a chance to write something about these cars sitting in India but thanks to Fiat we are able to get a taste of hot hatch now.

Recently Fiat launched the Abarth 595 Competizione here which is actually a performance oriented variant of the standard Fiat 500. Although this car may be way beyond reach of many because this is a premium offering from the Italian Auto manufacturer and is targeted mainly towards those customers who are actually finding an alternative for the Mini Cooper S.

But what about those customers who are running on a tight budget but wants to get a taste of a hot hatchback? To our surprise Fiat, acted as a savior for them too and decided to launch a performance oriented variant of their entry level hatch Punto Evo, which is actually a facelift variant of the Punto hatchback.

So is it just a sticker work and a new paint job or there is something more to it?

Thankfully it’s not, Abarth Punto Evo was showcased infront of the public at the Buddh International Circuit during the time of the Abarth 595 launch, it not only adorned the Abarth Scorpion badge but actually gets a more powerful 1.4 Litre T-Jet engine which also powers the Linea sedan. This new unit replaces the 1.4 Litre petrol unit which powers the standard car.

Does the 1.4 Litre T-Jet actually make any difference?

Offcourse! It does make a huge difference, the new engine generates about 143 Bhp of peak power under the hood which is almost 53 Bhp hike compared to the 90 Bhp that the 1.4 Litre unit produces under the hood of the standard hatchback.

Abarth has made quite a lot of interesting changes to the exterior of the Punto Evo to complement its drivetrain change but because Fiat also has to keep the pricing point in mind and thus were on a tight budget and it shows.

The changes made to the exterior of the Punto Evo are subtle but it definitely looks hotter compared to the other hatchbacks. Towards the front profile it gets chrome engulfed grilles, while the door handles and exhaust tips also gets wrapped around in chrome. The rest of the car remains identical to the Punto Evo. The other differences that you will also notice comes in the form of those Abarth badges which replaces the Fiat badge and also the Abarth style racing graphics positioned towards the lower half of the side profile of the car.

The stylish 16 inch scorpion alloy wheels which also gets wrapped with lower profile tyres but however take a closer look and you will notice the low profile tyres leaves a huge gap between the wheel arches. Fiat also has reduced the ride height of the hatchback furthermore to perfect the handling of this hatch.

The Abarth Punto Evo interior gets subtle changes compared to its exterior, the only noticeable change that we noticed inside comes in the form of Abarth badge placed on the steering wheel which actually replaces the Fiat badge. The rest of the change includes a fully Black soft touch dashboard which actually replaces the Beige and Black duel tone dashboard available with the standard hatch. The other change that you will also notice inside the cabin is that the seats gets Black Upholstery which actually comes with yellow contrast stitching.

Now this is definitely the most interesting part of this first impression review that you all are eagerly waiting for and what it gets under the hood.

The Abarth Punto is powered by the 1.4 Liter, 4 cylinder Turbo jet engine which puts up a healthy 145 Bhp of peak power at 5500 rpm and an even impressive 210 Nm of torque. That amount of power can be instantly felt as soon as you push the throttle. Now imagine a regular Punto Evo getting a dose of all that extra juice. A 5 speed manual transmission helps it in keeping all that power in right band.

The power change can definitely be felt as soon as you drive the hatchback and I am talking about some real power here (145 Ps means a lot for this small hatchback). Now in order to cope with the behavioral change Fiat has definitely made some mechanical changes to the standard Punto Evo which includes tighting the suspension springs stiffness and lowering the ride height. While to add more stopping power to the hatch Fiat has also installed rear disc brakes as well and thus it gets equipped with disc brakes on all the 4 wheels.

Installation Front, transverse
Type 4-cyl, in-line, 1368cc DOHC turbo-petrol
Power 143 bhp at 5500 rpm
Torque 212 Nm at 2000-4000rpm

Fiat has priced the new Abarth Punto at INR.9.95 Lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi).

Until now we haven’t found any competition for the Abarth Punto because it is the only hatchback which will be launched in our market with so much power on tap. However Volkswagen is also preparing their own version of hot hatchback for the Indian market which will be based on their Polo hatchback and will be powered by a 1.8 Litre unit but that launch is still far away.

Fiat is offering a complete package when they will be launching the Abarth Punto in India. Surely this hot hatch will not have any mechanical upgrades except the new engine so do not expect it to handle extraordinarily but with all that power on tap this will surely be one energetic small hatch which will be within your budget.
