Ban on 2000 cc and above displacing diesel engine extended by Supreme Court
As a blow to several automakers, who sell cars with engines displacing over 2000 cc, Supreme Court has extended the bans on the diesel cars with engines of 2.0 litre and above in Delhi and NCR. This is the second time the apex court ordered the ban on such cars. The next hearing on the case will be on 9th May, 2016. The ban on such cars was taken to curb the alarmingly rising pollution level in the Delhi and NCR. Due to the sanction several automakers have been facing a steep decline in their sales. The automakers include Mercedes Benz, Tata Motors, and Toyota who sell cars with larger engines.
The Society of Indian Automobiles Manufacturers (SIAM) believes, such a move will discourage the automakers from investing in the country. In the meantime, Supreme Court has allowed the Delhi police to register its new diesel cars with engine capacity above 2000 cc, but Delhi police had to pay a 30% of green cess in order to register those cars. In recent months Delhi government and Supreme Court has been taking several steps to reduce the pollution level in Delhi and NCR. From 1st May onwards, the diesel taxis in the region have been ordered to go off the road in Delhi and NCR, as Supreme Court denied extending the deadline of conversion diesel taxis to CNG. The Delhi government has been taking pollution curbing measures like Odd-Even rule in the region, which has significantly reduced the pollution level in the capital city and adjacent area.
Delhi-NCR To Continue Ban On Diesel Vehicles With Cubic Capacity Above 2000 cc
The ban on big diesel passenger vehicles which was implemented in Delhi NCR region since last year December still continues till Supreme Court makes the next hearing which will take place on 9th of May 2016. The decision of extending the ban on diesel vehicles which are above 2000 cc was taken on Saturday by the court.
The Court even refused to provide or give an extended deadline to the taxi operators in NCR, the taxi drivers were given a choice to switch from diesel to CNG within May 1st. The rule said all the taxi operators dunning on diesel will have to switch to CNG. The cab operators and their association also made an urge to the Government to extend the deadline but the Supreme Court officials refused to extend the deadline.
The Delhi NCR diesel cab operators were ordered to switch from diesel to CNG on March 1ST, later the deadline was extended to March 31st and again to April 30th.
According to reports there are about 60, 000 taxis registered in the national capital our of which 27,000 run on diesel and after Government implemented the orders more than 2, 000 diesel run taxis has switched from diesel to CNG.

Volkswagen has been one of the largest automaker of the world. But due to the recent Dieselgate scam their brand image has been affected very badly. The Dieselgate scam first came under light in the US, when several Volkswagen diesel cars equipped with the company’s EA 189 TDI engines were detected emitting 40 times higher Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) than the permitted emission limit.
The shocking fact was, that the automaker has been selling these cars across the world in several markets fitted with an emission cheating device, which emits less NOx in controlled environment like lab tests. Recently the German automaker took a decision to buy back or repair the affected cars, and it also agreed to give the affected customers compensations, as the repairs will reduce the performance and fuel economy of these cars. Volkswagen will buy back 5 lakh affected diesel cars in Dieselgate scam
As it seems Volkswagen trouble with Dieselgate scam is not getting over so easily. Finally the Volkswagen officials, lawyers and US government officials has come to a deal, according to which the German automaker will buy back the affected diesel cars which are equipped with the particular TDI engines and the emission cheating devices.
The German company will not only offer buy back options to the affected customers of those particular cars, but also give compensation to them. Although the German automaker is yet to reveal any detail officially, but they might offer buy back to those customers whose vehicles are relatively newer. The company will consider the facts like model year while buying back the cars. The owners of the newer cars will receive less compensation and the removal of the cheating devices. While the older vehicles will receive updates and more compensation, as these vehicles will be affected on the performance and fuel economy front after the cheating device removal. The amount of the compensation is not confirmed, but it might come between $1700 to $5000 depending on the car.
Volkswagen’s Dieselgate scam has been the biggest automotive scandal ever till date. The German company has been selling cars with emission cheating devices fitted to the TDI engines which emit less nitrogen oxide in controlled test environments. Recently the South Korean auto giant has revealed a rendered image of the Ioniq. The compact sedan looks to be defying the trend of hybrid car segment. Well, there is no point in hiding that the hybrid or electric cars have never been aesthetically beautiful or even stylish enough. Hyundai Ioniq seems to be a stylish car with an environment friendly power plant beneath its hood.
Earlier in 2015, TopSpeed.com has already got some spyshots of the car going to the Arctic circles for extreme cold weather testing. Hyundai Ioniq will come in with different powertrain options, which include plug in gasoline/electric hybrid, gasoline/electric hybrid and a completely electric powertrain.
The naming of the car is also pretty unique, as it refers to the elements of the creation. Ion is an electrically charged atom, the usage of the word “Ion” in the first part of the name suggests to the electric powertrains, while the second part clearly depicts the unique place this car is about to get in Hyundai lineup. In the Ioniq logo, the letter “Q” is portrayed as a visual breakthrough, which acknowledges the fresh approach of the advanced, low emission mode; as Hyundai officially puts it.
Although, the South Korean automaker has launched the all new Ioniq hybrid on 14th January, but the Hyundai Ioniq will go to production assembly sometime around mid 2016, while the car will be globally introduced at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show and New York Motor Show.

While Volkswagen is all set to initiate the biggest recall program of Indian automotive history, National Green Tribunal has pleaded the central government to impose ban on sales of Volkswagen cars. National Green Tribunal (NGT) has requested the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises, Ministry of Environmental Forest and Climate Change and the Central Pollution Control Board to impose ban on manufacturing, assembly and sale of Volkswagen cars in India. This seems to make the situation much tougher for the German brand.
The existence of an emission test cheating device first came in light in the US, then several countries tested the VW cars, which revealed that the German brand was cheating the emission tests globally. In India central government ordered ARAI to test the alleged VW cars, which revealed that the auto maker was cheating the tests in this country too. Recently in the wake of the worldwide scandal Volkswagen India has initiated a recall program which includes several Volkswagen models, alongside the Audi and Skoda models as well. This is also going to be the biggest recall program in the country as it involves more than 3.23 lakh cars. They have assured, that the brand will replace the alleged 1.2 litre, 1.5 litre, 1.6 litre, and 2.0 litre EA 189 diesel engines with a solution which was developed at Germany. In the meanwhile NGT has pleaded the ministries, and asked them to respond by 23rd December. Not only that, the scandal has prompted the central government to investigate all the cars from every manufacturer for possible emission cheating devices. No wonder, Volkswagen has not only put themselves into trouble, but they have created a non desired situation for every other auto maker in the country as well.
Volkswagen Group India has announced the recall of approximately 323700 cars in India, which are fitted with 1.2 litre, 1.5 litre, 1.6 litre, and 2.0 litre EA 189 diesel engines; that were manufactured and sold between 2008 and November 2015. Incidentally, this is going to be the biggest recall program ever. Earlier, Hyundai initiated a recall program of 2.23 lakh vehicles in the country, which was the biggest till date.
The German auto maker initiated the voluntary recall program after the Indian government ordered an investigation which revealed that Volkswagen has fitted the alleged engines with an emission test cheating device. The affected cars include 198500 units of Volkswagen cars alone. Volkswagen cars include models like Polo, Vento, Passat and Jetta. Apart from that Skoda and Audi also recalling their models. Audi A3 and A4 cars are included in this recall program. These two brands are recalling 88700 and 36500 units respectively which are fitted with the EA 189 diesel engine. All these cars will be fixed with the solution developed Volkswagen head office in Germany.

Toyota is known for their effort to make the environment better by manufacturing hybrid cars like Toyota Camry Hybrid, Prius. They are known as the pioneer of hybrid technology. To promote the hybrid and electric vehicles in India they took part in the “FAME India Eco Drive” rally which is an awareness rally to be run in between three cities - Delhi, Jaipur and Chandigarh. This rally is being organized by the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MoHI) and it started from Red Fort of New Delhi on 26th November. In this several hybrid and electric powered cars is running to promote the awareness of energy conservation.
The rally promotes mass adoption of hybrid and electric powertrain for vehicles under the National Scheme on Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME) India. The rally will arrive in Jaipur on 30th November and Chandigarh on 7th December 2015. Started from Red Fort of New Delhi, it covered Connaught Place, Maitry College, NH-8, MG Road in Gurgaon, District Collectorate in Gurgaon and concluded at MDI Gurgaon. More than 50 hybrid and electric vehicles from different auto makers took part in the rally.
Speaking at the flag off ceremony Mr. T.S Jaishankar, the Deputy Managing Director, Toyota Kirloskar Motor has said, "India emerges as the 4th largest consumer of energy in the world, following the US, China and Russia in energy accounting for 4.4% of global energy consumption. We feel privileged to be a part of the FAME Eco Drive to educate and encourage the use of full hybrid vehicles in India. Toyota Camry Hybrid is the first ever locally manufactured full hybrid vehicle with 48% more fuel efficiency and emits 25% lesser CO2 when compared to the car of the same size in petrol variant. From fuel efficient vehicle to developing ground breaking technology, our focus is on environmentally sustainable solutions in everything we do and every vehicle we make. The recently notified demand incentives for buyers by the Govt, in the form of an upfront reduced purchase price of environment friendly vehicles will give a boost to the demand and encourage faster adoption of these vehicles in India."

Mahindra Reva E2O comes as the first zero emission completely electric car of India. Now Mahindra started India’s first all electric car expedition consisting three Mahindra Reva E2O, which is named as the ‘Goodness drive’. The journey started from Srinagar, and it will end in Kanyakumari, therefore the journey will cover the entire length of north to south of the country.
In this expedition the Mahindra Reva E2Os will cover more than 5000 kms, 52 locations including 12 cities like Delhi, Jaipur, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Kanyakumari; and that too without any fuel and emission, making the cleanest eco drive ever. The main objective behind this expedition is increasing awareness among people. Present at the occasion of the inauguration of the expedition was Mr. Aravind De Silva, former Sri Lankan international cricketer. The Mahindra Reva E2O comes powered by a single electric induction motor which is connected with the rear wheel of the car. It comes powered by a 48V Lithium ion battery placed below the front seat. The electronics equipments are placed inside the vehicle, which are resistant to rain and water. It comes with instant power, available with the pressure on the accelerator. The body panels are also lightweight.
Volkswagen group has been facing stern criticism all around the world in context of emission test cheating scam in the US. Therefore several countries around the globe has ordered probe against VW vehicles. India also joined the fray a few days ago. With Volkswagen’s loyalty in question the German auto manufacturer is trying to regain the faith in an attempt to salvage their lost image.
VW group India has already begun the process of evaluating their vehicles, and they recently declared they will submit the evaluation report to the Indian government authorities by the end of November. According to a statement Volkswagen Group India has just sent, the company representatives have met Government of India – Ministry of Heavy Industries and ARAI, on 29th October 2015. They have updated the authorities on the evaluations so far on the ongoing emissions issue with reference to India.
The statement also says, “Since there is a complex combination of several brands, various models, different engine variants and gearboxes as well as different model years that need to be analyzed, establishing detailed facts is taking a longer time.” They have assured, after the evaluation process is complete and the reports are submitted the company will take the next steps depending on the findings from these evaluations. The German auto maker has assured that all the VW vehicles remain technically safe and roadworthy.

Now as the automotive world is progressing toward better eco friendly technology, London Taxi too is all set to walk the same route.
Recently London Taxi Company (LTC) has revealed that, soon the black taxis running on the roads of British capital will adorn the same hybrid technology, which ensures a better eco friendly emission system. They unveiled the prototype of the new design for its next generation zero emission capable Black Cab, which is named as the TX5, at a VIP event at Lancaster House, London. Incidentally, that event was a part of the state visit to the UK by Chinese President Xi Jinping. The TX5 concept prototype comes with a blend of the past generations of LTC models such as the Fairway series and derived from the iconic design of more than sixty years of style that has made the Black Cab an iconic character on the streets of London. The new zero emission capable TX5 has been updated to serve the needs of present generation passengers.
The TX5 comes with a new light weight aluminium body structure. The TX5 benefits from a range extended battery electric vehicle system. Although the new TX5 prototype retains the iconic London Taxi styling, but all its 2000 components have been re designed and fitted with the latest modern technologies. The TX5 comes designed to deliver comfort to the passengers and the drivers too. It can accommodate six passengers easily and it features improved leg room for the driver. An interesting characteristic of the TX5 is the return of the rear hinged door, which improves passenger access and, for the first time on a Black Cab, a panoramic glass roof is fitted to give the passengers a view of London skyline. TX5 is equipped with WiFi facility too. The TX5 will be launched in the UK at the end of 2017 and across international markets in 2018.

As a result of the scandal, Central Government has given a directive to the Indian automotive testing agency Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) to check whether the automobile giant has rigged emission tests in India as well. Recently Volkswagen was caught using a cheating device to reduce the actual emission figure during laboratory tests. When they get caught, US Government slapped a huge amount of fine due to the cheating. But the real effect came after that as the German automobile group faced immense criticism all around the world, and their popularity got reduced too. In the awake of that scam Indian Government has given the directive to make sure, whether the brand has done the similar thing in this country too or not. Although Volkswagen India is doing tests on their cars to make sure they meeting the emission norms of the country, but ARAI will be performing tests with modern gadgets, which can test a car on the roads too. After that there will be laboratory tests too. As we came to know, Volkswagen India officials has visited Delhi to meet the authorities there and discussed about the problem. We have also heard, they are preparing to recall a large amount of vehicles to check whether those vehicles are okay with the emission norms or not.

Although, there is no such news yet from Volkswagen group, but Dr. Herbert Diess, who is the CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand has said, “We are working at full speed on a solution that we will present to partners, to our customers and to the public as swiftly as possible. Our aim is to inform our customers as quickly as possible, so that their vehicles comply fully with regulations. I assure you that Volkswagen will do everything humanly possible to win back the trust of our customers, the dealerships and the public.”
From his statement, it is clear that Volkswagen group is trying to regain their reputation, which they lost after the news of the emission cheating scam came in public. Therefore the German auto giant may launch a recall drive soon, which will include vehicles like the sixth generation Volkswagen Golf, the seventh generation Volkswagen Passat and the first generation Volkswagen Tiguan. Incidentally, all these vehicles are equipped exclusively with the type EA 189 diesel engines, which is in question at present.
Dr. Diess also added that, the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand will inform all markets worldwide how many of vehicles are affected locally. Volkswagen group is working intensively on the remedial measures in close coordination with the certification authorities. Dr. Diess assured that, the Volkswagen vehicles will remain technically safe and roadworthy.
Volkswagen Chief Executive Officer Martin Winterkorn has resigned from Volkswagen group CEO post with immediate effect, in the wake of emission cheating scandal in America. Recently it came to public knowledge, that Volkswagen group was using a cheating software to manipulate the emission data, and by using this software the German auto manufacturer made defective vehicles easily pass in the NOx emission tests in USA. Due to this, Volkswagen group is about to face a huge amount of fine in that particular country.
As a result of this scandal the German group’s CEO Martin Winterkorn has resigned from his post. In an official statement released by Volkswagen group, Mr. Winterkorn has said, “I am shocked by the events of the past few days. Above all, I am stunned that misconduct on such a scale was possible in the Volkswagen Group. As CEO I accept responsibility for the irregularities that have been found in diesel engines and have therefore requested the Supervisory Board to agree on terminating my function as CEO of the Volkswagen Group. I am doing this in the interests of the company even though I am not aware of any wrong doing on my part. Volkswagen needs a fresh start – also in terms of personnel. I am clearing the way for this fresh start with my resignation. I have always been driven by my desire to serve this company, especially our customers and employees. Volkswagen has been, is and will always be my life. The process of clarification and transparency must continue. This is the only way to win back trust. I am convinced that the Volkswagen Group and its team will overcome this grave crisis.”
As the heat is soaring day by day due to global warming, people are realizing the value of the conservation of environment and so are our manufacturers and entrepreneurs. That is why Maruti Suzuki India Limited have understood the need of the hour and thus have aligned themselves with the Government’s vision and mission of adopting and strengthening usage of Solar Power by commissioning a 1MW mono-crystalline photovoltaic Solar Power Plant. This plant has been built at the Maruti Suzuki’s Manesar’s facility and will start the operations from this month itself.
Spread over an area of 8900 square meter, this plant will be able to provide an annual output of 1 MW of power and help to reduce 1200 tonnes of CO2 emissions yearly. It took Rs. 103 Million of investment to build this plant which was initiated from the month of November last year and has been completed in the month of June this year. This solar power plant will be having around 4,000 mono-crystalline panels and the power output will be synchronized with the natural gas based captive power plant and will be supplied to the facility.
On the initiative, Mr Rajiv Gandhi, Executive Director, (Plant), Maruti Suzuki said, “With the launch of 1MW photovoltaic solar power plant, Maruti Suzuki has taken the first step to harness renewable solar energy. The initiative is in line with the Company’s philosophy of adopting environment friendly technologies that may have high upfront costs, but help bring down CO2 emissions. Solar energy is abundant, versatile and efficient. Through this solar facility the Company will be able to contribute towards environment. Going forward, the Company is committed to expand its environment care initiatives.”
Suzuki is looking for alternate technologies to boost fuel efficiency of their cars. Suzuki Motor Corp said they will introduce a simplified gas-electric hybrid technology in their cars; their aim is to offer efficient options to its customers at an affordable price.
According to the manufacturer, demand for fuel efficient cars is growing not just in the emerging markets but also in Europe, Asia and Japan as well. Suzuki also builds cars with kinetic energy recovering systems that use regenerative braking to charge lithium-ion batteries. Unlike traditional hybrids, the battery only powers the air-conditioning system.
The new system will use this energy to accelerate the car as well. Suzuki is developing sophisticated hybrid systems for small, city cars. The gas-hybrid setup has to be both simple and inexpensive to be fitted into compact cars. The new system will be first introduced on small cars in Japan, followed by Europe.
Suzuki has a huge presence in India under the brand name Maruti Suzuki. They are India’s largest car manufacturers and have a long history of making affordable, reliable and economical products tailor made for Indian buyers.
In the age of low carbon emissions, downsizing for better fuel economy, there are few engine makers who just can’t give up on performance. Getting a bucket full of horsepower from an engine wasn’t that difficult, until now. Small, fast hatchbacks that used anywhere between 1.6-liter- 2.0-liter engine have had to downsize further to improve fuel economy.
A breakthrough came in the form of Ford’s 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine. Now, General Motors has launched their version of Ford’s EcoBoost. GM like to call it "ECOTEC". Based on a similar principle the 1.0-liter ECOTEC will make its debut on a European hatchback.
The Opel Adam will be the first car to receive this new turbocharged petrol engine. The 1.0-liter ECOTEC in question uses "state-of-the-art" technology to deliver the optimum balance between performance and economy. The 3-cylinder engine uses direct fuel injection and a turbocharger.
This setup ensures increased low-end torque and power characteristics of a 1.6-liter naturally aspirated engine. CO2 emissions are reduced by 99 g/km, thus making it cleaner than a larger capacity engine. The 1.0-liter ECOTEC will come in two states of tune. The base will have 90 horsepower while the higher spec will deliver 115 horsepower and 166 Nm from as low as 1800 rpm.
The 90 horsepower version is claimed to deliver a mileage of 4.3 liter per 100 km which translates to 23.25 km per liter. The improved fuel efficiency is a combined result of direct fuel injection, variable valve timing, weight-saving all-aluminum construction and a switchable water pump.
