An affordable Diesel variant is now here which costs almost 12.32 Lakhs less than the top end diesel variant
Mercedes-Benz, another diesel variant to their E-Class lineup, Called the E 220 d this will be sold as an entry level diesel variant and is priced at INR. 57.14 Lakhs (ex-showroom Pune). This diesel variant is priced just above the entry-level E 200 petrol which is priced at Rs 56.14 lakh. The only diesel powered car until now in the E-Class lineup was priced at a hefty price tag of INR. 69.46 lakh thus this newly introduced entry level diesel variant will be beneficial for those who wants a diesel car within their reach.
Another good thing is that just like the E350D the E200 is also available in the long wheelbase variant of the E-Class which are sold exclusively in the markets of India and China.
The E220D, unlike its bigger brother, uses an entirely new 2.0 Litre four cylinder turbo-diesel engine which produces about 194 Bhp of peak power at 3, 800 rpm and 400 Nm of torque between 1,600 rpm and 2,800 rpm. All those power is then transmitted via the 9G-TRONIC 9-speed automatic transmission to the rear wheels of the sedan. This diesel unit replaced the Luxury car makers 2.1 Litre unit internationally last year although this is a new engine has been developed to meet the Euro VI emission in other International markets, Mercedes developed it specifically to meet the BSIV norms of the Indian Government. The engine I s quite a powerful one and is capable of sprinting from 0-100 km/h mark in just 7.8 seconds while the top speed is limited to 240 Km/h mark.
This was the most powerful diesel engine offered with the X3 CRossover
BMW silently discontinues the 3.0 Litre diesel unit of the X3 lineup from India. This used to be their top end diesel variant which they offered in the Indian market. After the discontinuation, the X3 model lineup now continues to be sold in the Indian market only with the 2.0-litre, four cylinder petrol and diesel powertrains in India.
The top end 3.0 Litre inline six-cylinder unit was available only with the high-end M-sport trim and only with the xDrive 30d guise. The twin turbo diesel unit was capable of producing an impressive 255 Hp of peak power and equally impressive 580 Nm of torque. The diesel engine was paired to an 8-speed automatic gearbox, and it also came along with paddle shifters.
Now after the discontinuation of this powerful diesel unit the X3 model will be available with only a single 2.0 Litre four-cylinder diesel unit which is capable of producing about 188 Bhp of peak power and 400 Nm of torque. Apart from this diesel unit, there is also a 2.0 Litre petrol unit on offer as well with the X3. The petrol unit is capable of producing about 241 Bhp of peak power and 350 Nm of peak torque. Both the diesel and the petrol engine come paired to an 8-speed Steptronic automatic gearbox.
The 2.0 Liter diesel unit will be sold alongside the 2.0 Litre Petrol
The rumours of Jaguar launching the new 2.0 Litre diesel unit was doing rounds on the internet for quite some time, and finally, the rumours came true. Jaguar today introduced the 2.0 Litre diesel derivative of MY17 Jaguar XE in India at an attractive starting price of INR.38.25 Lakh, (ex-showroom, Delhi). This engine will be sold alongside the 2.0 Litre petrol unit. The new 2.0 Litre diesel will be available with all the trim levels of the XE sedan including the base Pure, the mid-range Prestige and the top end Portfolio trims.
With the entry of this new 2.0 Litre Diesel unit, the Jaguar XE can compete directly with its other rivals as well which already came equipped with diesel drivetrains alongside the petrol units.
Talking about the new 2.0 Litre 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel unit, in particular, this diesel mill is capable of producing about 180 Hp of peak power and 430 Nm of torque. The engine is paired to a 8 speed eight-speed automatic gearbox. This diesel unit also powers some other Jaguar cars as well including the new XF and F-Pace. With the inclusion of the new Diesel unit, the XE can now compete directly with the entry-level Mercedes C 220d, the BMW 320d and the Audi A4 35 TDI.
There is no difference regarding equipment list the Jaguar XE gets Jaguar Drive Control, Torque Vectoring by Braking, All Surface Progress Control, Meridian Sound System (380 W), Sliding Panoramic Sunroof and 20.32 cm (8) Touch Screen with InControl Touch Infotainment System, etc.
The British AUto manufacturer has already commenced bookings for the upcoming diesel variant
Jaguar has launched the XE in India back in February 2016, but it was only launched with a petrol variant. The XE petrol variant gets the 2.0-litre, in-line 4 engine which churns out 197bhp @ 5,500rpm and 320Nm of torque @ 1,200-4,500rpm. But after a year the British luxury car maker has decided to introduce the diesel variant of the sedan as well. The company has even started taking bookings in all the 24 dealerships across India.
The diesel variant of the XE will get the 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder, turbo diesel engine. This engine develops around 177bhp of peak power at 4000rpm and 430Nm of torque at 1,750 – 2,500rpm. The engine will be paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The diesel motor powered XE is capable of sprinting from 0-100 km/h mark in 7.8 seconds and can reach a top speed of 228km/h.
The XE is the entry level offering from Jaguar which has definitely own immense popularity because of its styling and modern features. Apart from the XE the Jaguar range also consists of XF, XJ, F-Pace SUV and the F-Type coupe and convertible.

The low demand of the smaller diesel engine has forced Maruti to take such a big decision
It looks like Maruti has taken the decision to discontinue the Celerio Diesel variant from the Indian market. The good news is that petrol variant of the Celerio is still on sale in India, but the diesel variant totally disappeared from their Indian website recently.
Maruti launched the Celerio hatchback back in 2014 and during the time of its launch the hatchback was offered only with a petrol engine under the hood. Later, after almost a year, Maruti added the diesel variant as well to the lineup.
The diesel mill which used to power the celery was a completely new unit which was developed by Maruti engineers. The small 793 cc unit produced about 47 bhp peak power at 3,500 RPM and 125 NM torque at 2,000 RPM. Now compared to some other rivals of this segment the power and torque figures were less, but keeping the size of the 2 cylinder engine in mind the power output were quite impressive. The car definitely returned an impressive fuel efficiency figure of 27.6 kmpl which was definitely the highest fuel efficiency figures of its segment. Besides the impressive fuel efficiency figures the diesel engine was also one of the lightest units weighing only 89 Kilograms courtesy the aluminium engine blocks.
Now when Maruti introduced this new engine the trend of the smaller diesel engine was quite popular because of the increasing petrol prices. But recently the Market situation changed completely and the consumers were inclined towards petrol engines only because of the lesser gap in between both fuel prices.
The official launch will take place this February
Hyundai is all set to introduce the Grand i10 facelift in India in the month of February; this will be their first major launch for the Indian market in the year 2017. Details of the soon to be launched hatchback now have surfaced online including information about its new updated engine and pricing.
According to the recent reports the facelift Grand i10 prices will start from INR. 4, 58, 000 for the base ERA petrol trim while the top end Asta diesel is expected to be priced at INR. 7.33 lakh(ex showroom). The best thing is that the facelift variant base variant will now be atleast INR. 30,000 cheaper than the existing variant. Apart from the revised pricing the hatchback facelift also gets a revised lineup as well. The Asta(O) trim has now been discontinued in favour of standard Asta trim, while two new trims are also being added to the current lineup which includes Sportz(O) and the Sportz(O) AT which is available exclusively with the petrol variant.
Coming to the cosmetic changes the soon to be launched Grand i10 will get a wider front grille, repositioned front fog lamps and a new rear bumper to go with the frontal changes. Unfortunately there are no other big changes made to the hatchback.
The most powerful compact sedan of its segment
Volkswagen has introduced the diesel variant of the Ameo in India the prices of the diesel variant of the compact sedan starts from INR. 6.33 Lakhs and goes all the way to INR. 9.32 Lakhs for the top end variant.
The reason for launching the diesel variant after few months of the launch of the petrol variant was Volkswagen was working to improve the diesel engine. The new diesel engine has now received some minor jump in its overall power output thanks to the new set of turbochargers.
The 1.5 Litre, 4 cylinder unit now produces about 110 Ps of peak power and 250 Nm of torque. This actually also makes the Ameo the most powerful compact sedan of its segment which is then followed by the Ford Figo Aspire which produces about 100 ps of peak power. The new and more powerful 1.5 Litre unit is paired to a 5 speed manual transmission as standard while there is also an optional 7 speed DSG unit as well on offer. However the automatic transmission is available exclusively with the top two trims only.
If we talk about safety features the Ameo Diesel variant gets cruise control, static cornering lights, ESP and hill hold control (DSG only), rain sensing wipe. Moreover it also gets dual airbags and ABS available as standard with the compact sedan.
On the inside the Ameo gets touchscreen infotainment system with Mirror link system. The rest of the interior looks identical to what you will find in the Petrol variant as well.
The diesel engine with bigger turbocharger now produces more power
Volkswagen will be introducing the diesel variant of the Ameo in India on 27th September. Until now the compact sedan was available in the Indian market with a 1.2 litre petrol engine option.
The diesel variant of this compact sedan will be powered by an updated 1.5 Litre TDI engine which also powers the Volkswagen Polo and the Vento sedan. The engine has recently been updated and it now features a slightly bigger turbocharger which has helped in improving the overall power output. The 1.5 Litre diesel unit now produces about 110 Bhp of peak power. Expect the diesel engine to be paired to a 5 speed manual gearbox while one can also expect an optional 7-speed DSG gearbox as well.
Just like the pterol variant the Ameo diesel variant will also be sold in three trim levels which includes the Trendline, Comfortline and Highline. You definitely won’t find any change when it comes to styling, however the Diesel variant will get a new badge towards the rear.
Inside expect the same feature from the petrol variant to be carried over to the diesel variant as well. Some of the highlighted feature in the Ameo diesel might include touchscsreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, and leather wrapped steering wheel. For the safety of the passengers the Ameo gets dual front airbags as standard along with ABS as well. The top end variants will also feature cruise control, automatic rain sensing wipers, reverse parking camera etc.
The Volkswagen Ameo diesel variant will compete directly with the Maruti Dzire, Tata Zest and the Hyundai Xcent.
The main highlight is the new engine under the hood
Mahindra has launched their new sub-4meter Bolero SUV today. Called the Bolero Power+ SUV, it is available in three grades SLE, SLX and ZLX being the top end variant. The prices of the newest compact SUV of the block starts at INR. INR 6.59 Lakhs(ex-showroom Mumbai) while the top end variant is priced at INR. 7.57 Lakhs (ex-showroom Mumbai).
Mahindra hasn’t paid much attention towards the styling the Bolero Power+ SUV gets Bolero’s signature grille towards the front as well as those signature bumpers as well. The blue vision headlamps and the body decals help in adding some sporty details to the SUV.
Coming to the interior the new Sub 4 meter SUV gets a duel tone interior. The cabin compared to the exterior looks modern because it gets this stylish digital instrument cluster, a driver information system and also a voice messaging system. The duel tone interiors also help in adding some colour to the SUV’s character not making the interior look bland.
Coming to the main highlight of the SUV its engine, the new Bolero Power+ SUV gets the reliable mHawkD70 engine which is capable of producing about 70 bhp of peak power at 3,600 rpm and 195 Nm of peak torque between 1,400-2,200 rpm making it almost 13 percent more powerful than the existing Bolero. The engine is paired to a 5 speed manual gearbox which sends all that power to the rear wheel of this SUV.
What does this mean for the Indian market
This really took us by surprise when we first heard the news that at the ongoing 2016 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show an Indian made Vitara Brezza compact SUV with AT made its appearance. Actually after its official debut at the 2016 Auto expo in Delhi this was the second auto expo where the sub-4 meter compact SUV actually made its appearance.
The Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza will be sold under the Suzuki banner and will be launched at a later stage in the Indonesian market. The compact SUV will be sold in the Indonesian market with a single diesel engine option which will come paired to both 5 speed manual as well as an automatic transmission. Though what is surprising is the fact that the Indonesian market will be the very first market which will get the Automatic transmission variant of the Vitara Brezza.
Although the engine option offered in the Indonesian market is the 1.3 litre, four cylinder DDiS diesel unit which is capable of producing about 90 Ps of peak power and 200 Nm of torque and is already on offer in India as well. But the best part is that it will be available with both the 5 speed manual as well as an Automatic transmission which will be available as an option. Although India gets the same engine but only with single 5 speed manual gearbox.
The Vitara Brezza won the title of India’s largest selling UV of the Country last month by able to sell over 10, 000 units. There is a waiting period of over 6-9 months for the compact SUV at this moment in our Country.
the second generation Innova gets shaper exterior design and premium cabin

What do we know so far
Volkswagen first showcased the Ameo compact sedan which has been developed specifically for the Indian market at the 2016 Auto expo. The compact sedan was launched in the month of June while the deliveries began only in July. The Ameo was offered in the Indian market with only a single 1.2 Litre petrol which is capable of producing about 75 Ps of peak power and 110 Nm of torque, the engine is paired to a 5 speed manual gearbox. The ARAI rated fuel efficiency of this engine is about 17.83 km to a litre.
Now Volkswagen also has plans to introduce the diesel variant of this sedan as well and it was recently also caught being tested on the Indian roads. According to the reports on the internet Volkswagen has decided to introduce the diesel variant of this compact sedan towards the festive season.
The Diesel variant of the Ameo will be powered by an updated 1.5 Litre, four cylinder TDI unit which also comes with a new turbocharger. As a result of that update the power output of the diesel mill has increased significantly and it is expected to produce about 108 Hp of peak power and an impressive 250 Nm of torque. The engine will be paired to both 5 speed manual and a 7 speed DSG transmission. While you can expect the lower trims to get the manual transmission the higher trims will be made available with the automatic transmission.
For the safety of the occupants expect the Diesel variants of the Ameo to get ABS and front airbags as standard even in the lower trims. While you can expect plenty of other modern features like a touchsreen infotainment system with rear parking camera, automatic climate control, steering mounted controls, cruise controls etc available with the car.
What do we know so far
Mahindra & Mahindra has introduced the completely new Scorpio which comes with ‘Intelli-Hybrid’ technology which is actually a newly developed mild hybrid technology. This new system is available across the entire manual gearbox equipped variants which actually uses Mahindra’s renowned mHawk diesel unit. The new Scorpio Intelli-Hybrid is priced at Rs 12.84 lakh (ex-showroom, Navi Mumbai) for the top S10 2WD variant.
According to Mahindra the new Intelli-Hybrid technology can reduce fuel consumption by up to 7%. The system comes into effect while you actually accelerate or decelerate the vehicle. The electric motor assists the other motor and creates brake energy redistribution. The intell-Hybrid technology also consists of start stop technology as well which automatically turns off the engine while the vehicle is stationary and uses the brake energy to charge the battery. In other words the new technology by Mahindra works just like SHVS technology which was invented by Maruti and used in some of their cars. The intelli-Hybrid technology also helps in contributing towards greener and cleaner environment.
The only unfortunate thing is the base S2 trim actually misses out the newest technology because this is actually equipped with the older 2.5-litre diesel motor instead of the new 2.2 Litre unit. However the variant gets Mahindra’s Micro-Hybrid start-stop technology. Moreover the 1.99 litre which has been meant for the market of Delhi and NCR regions also misses out this new feature.
In terms of features the new Scorpio gets an automatic transmission system and voice messaging system as well. The new Intelli-Hybrid system is available with the S4, S4+, S4+ 4wd, S6+, S8, S10-2WD (Manual Transmission) and S10-4WD (Manual Transmission) trims. The 2.2 Litre m-Hawk engine is capable of producing about 120 Bhp of peak power at 4000 rpm and 280 Nm of torque in between 1800-2800 rpm.
Supreme Court might lift the ban after payment of one time environment cess
It’s been half a year, 2000 cc diesel engines are banned in Delhi and NCR. Because of that several automakers like Mercedes Benz, Toyota, Mahindra & Mahindra, Audi, BMW has seen steep decline in their sales figures. While automaker like Toyota has threatened not to launch any new models in the country, automaker like Tata Motors and Mahindra has changed their strategy to equip the Delhi and NCR spec large cars with sub 2000 cc engines. On the other side, the sales of petrol cars have been increased.
Meanwhile Supreme Court has announced they are open to lift the ban on 2000 cc and larger diesel engine powered cars in Delhi and NCR. But condition remains, as the Apex Court has suggested an one time cess to impose on the large cars. Which means the price of these cars will significantly increase. Another question remains; who ever pays hefty, gets the license to pollute? No wonder, another big debate is awaiting.
Meanwhile, we take a look at the popular SUVs with 2000 cc or larger diesel engines under the hood, which have been greatly affected by the ban in Delhi and NCR.

Mercedes Benz, Tata Motors and Toyota seems to in trouble unlimited
As a blow to several automakers, who sell cars with engines displacing over 2000 cc, Supreme Court has extended the bans on the diesel cars with engines of 2.0 litre and above in Delhi and NCR. This is the second time the apex court ordered the ban on such cars. The next hearing on the case will be on 9th May, 2016. The ban on such cars was taken to curb the alarmingly rising pollution level in the Delhi and NCR. Due to the sanction several automakers have been facing a steep decline in their sales. The automakers include Mercedes Benz, Tata Motors, and Toyota who sell cars with larger engines.
The Society of Indian Automobiles Manufacturers (SIAM) believes, such a move will discourage the automakers from investing in the country. In the meantime, Supreme Court has allowed the Delhi police to register its new diesel cars with engine capacity above 2000 cc, but Delhi police had to pay a 30% of green cess in order to register those cars. In recent months Delhi government and Supreme Court has been taking several steps to reduce the pollution level in Delhi and NCR. From 1st May onwards, the diesel taxis in the region have been ordered to go off the road in Delhi and NCR, as Supreme Court denied extending the deadline of conversion diesel taxis to CNG. The Delhi government has been taking pollution curbing measures like Odd-Even rule in the region, which has significantly reduced the pollution level in the capital city and adjacent area.
Supreme Court will take further decisions on 9th May
The ban on big diesel passenger vehicles which was implemented in Delhi NCR region since last year December still continues till Supreme Court makes the next hearing which will take place on 9th of May 2016. The decision of extending the ban on diesel vehicles which are above 2000 cc was taken on Saturday by the court.
The Court even refused to provide or give an extended deadline to the taxi operators in NCR, the taxi drivers were given a choice to switch from diesel to CNG within May 1st. The rule said all the taxi operators dunning on diesel will have to switch to CNG. The cab operators and their association also made an urge to the Government to extend the deadline but the Supreme Court officials refused to extend the deadline.
The Delhi NCR diesel cab operators were ordered to switch from diesel to CNG on March 1ST, later the deadline was extended to March 31st and again to April 30th.
According to reports there are about 60, 000 taxis registered in the national capital our of which 27,000 run on diesel and after Government implemented the orders more than 2, 000 diesel run taxis has switched from diesel to CNG.
