Datsun stunned the world by announcing their return. This time however, they are here not to serve motoring enthusiasts, but to serve an ever growing middle class in the world’s biggest economies. The Datsun Go made its debut at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo.

Based on the same hatchback, Datsun also revealed the Go+ MPV. The company also gave us a glimpse into the future of the newly resurrected brand. The Delhi Auto Expo proved to be an ideal platform to showcase the future of Datsun.

The Datsun Redi-Go Concept is a small crossover based on the same platform. The concept is important for the Indian market as the segment has seen rapid growth in the past few months. The compact crossover segment will see more action as we move forward. Datsun would definitely want to be a part of the CUV revolution that is taking place in India today.

Being a just a concept at this stage, Datsun has not finalized on the engines that will power the Redi-Go once put into production. That said, we can place our bets on a frugal diesel engine mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.

EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR

The Datsun Redi-Go Concept builds on the design philosophy laid down by the Datsun brand for its next generation of cars. Towards the front, we have a trapezoidal grille with a distinct honeycomb structure. The headlamps are angular and sporty giving the front fascia a dynamic and confident look.

“We wanted a modern and characteristic design that, at the same time, appeared long-lasting and substantial. We feel we have managed to combine these apparent contradictions in the concept,” said Koji Nagano, Executive Design Director, who leads the entire Datsun design project.

The lime green exterior with matte aluminium surfaces contrasting the base color make the concept look quite stunning in flesh. The large wheel arches further accentuate confidence and robust design. The wheelbase is 2350 mm and the high ground clearance should make it nifty around uneven ground. The interior of the Redi-Go Concept is claimed to be spacious

DRIVETRAIN

The Datsun Redi-Go Concept is still in its early stages of development and was presented at the Expo as a design study. Of course, the fact that it is a compact crossover makes it rather interesting and folks would be excited to know more about the car.

Sadly, we can only speculate about the underpinnings and drivetrains at the moment. We expect the Redi-Go to make use of the same engines as that of the Go hatchback. In India, the Datsun Go is powered by a 1.2-liter petrol engine that delivers 67 bhp and 10 kgm of torque. The engine is mated to a 5-speed transmission that could be used on the production Redi-Go as well.

CONCLUSION

The Datsun Redi-Go Concept has got the looks to woo customers to the brand. With the support of Nissan, Datsun would offer value-for-money products in the future and the Redi-Go would fit quite well in an ever growing compact crossover segment. It could also prove to be a cheaper alternative to what we have now in the form of the Ford EcoSport and the likes.

Shiro Nakamura, SVP and Chief Creative Officer, said: “Although Datsun redi-GO CONCEPT is just that – a concept – it shows clearly the way we are thinking. It’s an ambitious styling exploration but, being a Datsun, it is a logical design, too”.
Datsun redi-GO CONCEPT builds on Datsun’s design language, being modern and distinctive, clear and robust, vigorous and positive. Combining five-door hatchback practicality with a rugged SUV stance, the Datsun redi-GO CONCEPT previews a potential small crossover for the Indian market.

“We wanted a modern and characteristic design that, at the same time, appeared long-lasting and substantial. We feel we have managed to combine these apparent contradictions in the concept,” said Koji Nagano, Executive Design Director, who leads the entire Datsun design project.

Fully integrated bumpers front and rear underscore Datsun redi-GO CONCEPT’s robust design which is accentuated by large wheel arches filled by stylish dark chrome 15-inch alloy wheels. The body is finished in a flamboyant lime green, an active and bold colour reflecting the freshness.

The lime green contrasts with matte aluminium-look grey finish for the sills, wheels arches, and bumper inserts reinforcing its crossover concept aspects. With a wheelbase of 2,350 mm and high ground clearance Datsun redi-GO CONCEPT offers ample interior space.

Although the concept remains a styling study at this stage, were it to be put into production it would be priced to target established compact hatchbacks delivering a compelling mix of modernity, quality and innovation.

“If we were to make a car like Datsun redi-GO CONCEPT it would be a segment creator in India, an aspirational car that at the same time is attainable, a car that would be within reach of the first time buyer. This concept shows how serious we are about reinvigorating the market by catering for the needs of a growing class of Indians who have the chance to own a family car that will enable them to enjoy a new sense of independence,” said Vincent Cobee, Global Head of Datsun.

The Datsun redi-GO concept will be on display at the Datsun stand at the India Auto Expo 2014 from February 7th till the 11th.
