Creta | Seltos Watch Out; Maruti And Toyota Are Coming For You

The Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos will soon see some stiff competition in the mid-size SUV segment from the likes of Maruti and Toyota

Suzuki and Toyota have teamed up and will soon bring a range of new products to the market. We will soon get to see the first all-new vehicle jointly developed by the Japanese manufacturers to take on the Koreans. The all-new car will come to the Indian market next year as Maruti Suzuki plans to bring a slew of SUVs to the market this year.

The Hyundai Creta has had an unprecedented run in the Indian market for years before the arrival of sister brand Kia. Currently, the mid-size SUV segment is dominated by Hyundai and Kia even though manufacturers like Skoda, VW, Renault, Nissan, and even Tata and MG have tried to penetrate the segment. Now, Maruti Suzuki and Toyota are working together to bring an all-new car to end the dominance of the Koreans in the mid-size SUV segment.

The new car will be based on the DNGA platform

After rebadging cars for a while, both Toyota and Maruti will conceive an all-new mid-size SUV from a clean sheet of paper. Both the models will have the same core and platforms but will look different from the outside. The new models will be based on the Daihatsu-sourced modular platform known as the DNGA. This platform is designed for the emerging markets and is different from the TNGA platform that underpins the new Camry.

The new car will target the immensely successful and popular Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos

Just like the Vitara Brezza - Urban Cruiser, Baleno - Glanza, the new vehicle will sell from the showrooms of both the manufacturers. But since it is an all-new vehicle, both the manufacturers can incorporate their styling elements to give a unique design unlike the vehicles mentioned above.

New SUV to be manufactured by Toyota

The all-new SUV will be manufactured by Toyota and will be supplied to Maruti Suzuki initially. It will be manufactured by Toyota at its Bidadi plant in Karnataka. Toyota has used the codename D22 for the SUV while Maruti Suzuki codenamed the upcoming vehicle as YFG. Until now Maruti Suzuki was manufacturing all the rebadged cars and supplying them to Toyota.

Maruti-Toyota SUV to be highly fuel-efficient with hybrid

Toyota will finally bring its hybrid expertise to the affordable models. The new SUV will offer a strong hybrid system similar to the hybrid system of the Camry. It will come with a bigger battery pack that will even allow the vehicle to work on pure electric mode.

It will be a major upgrade from the Maruti Suzuki’s SHVS mild-hybrid system that can only offer limited functions like start/stop and mild electric boost to the petrol powertrain.
Keeping up with the trends in the market, both the manufacturers will bring the cars with a long list of features to take on the leaders Creta and Seltos.

New SUV will arrive this year

Since it is an all-new car, it will be designed differently by both the manufacturers

Maruti Suzuki and Toyota will bring their respective iterations of the new SUV by the festive season this year. The brands also plan to bring the updated version of the Baleno - Glanza, Vitara Brezza - Urban Cruiser and the Ertiga with its rebranded Toyota cousin.
