All Chevrolet Cars to be discontinued by the end of 2017 however Chevrolet will provide after sales service to their existing customers
The rumours of Chevrolet exiting Indian market were doing rounds on the internet for quite a long time. Now, finally, those rumours come true Chevrolet officially announced their departure from the Indian market yesterday although General Motors did say that their focus in India will now only be on exports.
General Motors Telegaon assembly plant, will remain open and will be used as the export hub. As a result of their exit from Indian market General Motors now will slowly stop selling the Chevrolet cars in India by the end of the year 2017. Chevrolet cars like the Beat, Sail twins, Cruze and Trailblazer SUV will be discontinued from the Indian market by the end of this year. GM has already stopped operation of their Halol facility in April 2017. We are still not sure what forced General Motors to take such big decision, but we could certainly blame its poor sales figures and lack of new products as the main reasons.
Stefan Jacoby, GM executive vice president and president of GM International, said, "We explored many options, but determined the increased investment originally planned for India would not deliver the returns of other significant global opportunities. It would also not help us achieve a leadership position or compelling, long-term profitability in the domestic market. Difficult as it has been to reach this decision, it is the right outcome to support our global strategy and deliver appropriate returns for our shareholders." He also included that their decision in strengthening the performance of their GM international operation and establishing GM as a more focused and disciplined company.

Some reports suggest that the new generation Chevrolet Beat will be launching within the next few months here in India. This is a new generation hatchback which is commonly known as Spark in Global market. However, there is a difference between the International spec hatchback and the hatchback which will launch in India.
While the International Spark underpins a whole new platform called G2XX platform, which is the successor to GM’s Gamma 2 platform and underpins some other GM vehicles like Aveo and Bolt EV, the Indian spec Beat will continue to use the old Beat’s platform to cut the cost. So you can say that the new generation Beat is an updated variant of its predecessor.

Expect the new hatchback to launch towards the first half of 2017
Chevrolet is all set to introduce the new generation Beat hatchback soon, the hatchback was spotted couple of times being tested on the Indian road. It was once again caught on video as well strengthening the chances of its launch in the recent months.
Chevrolet showcased the new generation Beat hatchback for the first time at the 2015 Seoul Motor show. While for the International market the Beat (also known as Spark) is based on a new M2 platform. This is an improved platform but unfortunately the Indian spec Beat will be based on the same old platform which underpins the current hatchback. The reason for GM not using the new expensive M2 platform for the Indian market is to keep the prices of the new hatchback down and in the same margin of its predecessor which is on sale currently.

Thed newest compact sedan will replace the Sail compact sedan in the market
The car was first showcased at the 2016 Auto expo where it attracted quite a lot of attention. This new Chevrolet Beat Essentia concept was built on the same platform which also supports the new Beat hatchback. According to the recent reports the car will be launched in the Indian market next year and will take on some of the other rivals of the Indian market like the Tata Zest and the Hyundai Xcent and also Maruti Swift Dzire.
The test mule which was caught testing was heavily camouflaged but there was no doubt that this is definitely the new sedan. The original concept which was showcased at the show surely looked interesting with its big headlamps towards the front and tall taillamps towards the rear. Now it will be interesting to find out how much styling will be carried over to the production variant as well. Inside the concept things looked quite modern as well. The concept had blue backlit digital instrument cluster, this instrument cluster consisted of the digital speedometer, tachometer. The centre of the dashboard had a toucshscreen music system hopefully this too will be continued to the production variant as well.
Under the hood the Beat Essentia will most probably be powered by the same 1.2-litre STEC ll petrol engine which powers the current generation Beat hatchback, this engine produces about 77 bhp and 107 Nm of torque. The diesel variant on the other hand will most probably be powered by the new 1.0 Litre three cylinder turbocharged unit. A 5 speed manual transmission will be paired to both the engines which will send power to the front wheels.
Expect the new Beat Essentia Compact sedan to be priced in between INR. 4-7 lakh ex showroom.
airbagless Indian built Chevy Beat gets 0 stars while Euro version with airbag got 4 stars in 2009
After all the controversy surrounding the crash test results of the Indian cars last year what it looks like nothing has changed actually. Only yesterday we reported about both the cars and how they scored at the Global NCAP crash tests. Now the Chevrolet Beat which is one of the popular hatchbacks from GM motors was tested at the Latin NCAP test facility and the results were equally shocking as well.
The made in India Chevrolet Beat which is sold under the name of Spark GT in the Latin American market scored zero stars for adult and child occupant protection. The Spark GT is a popular model in the markets of Mexico and Colombia.
Alejandro Furas, Latin NCAP Secretary General said that this is definitely another big disappointment from General Motors especially for the model which definitely has potential to offer the highest level of protection. The basic version which was tested by Euro NCAP in 2009 was equipped with 6 airbags in total and thus it scored an impressive 4 stars. Now compared to that this is almost unacceptable, while the European variant is offered with 6 airbags the Latin American version which is priced almost the same gets no airbags at all.
While in regards to child occupancy, the Latin NCAP was surprised that the child restraint system was faced forward by General Motors for a child belonging to age group of 18 months. The global tendency however is to keep the child restraint faced rearward as much as possible. Thus this is also definitely not expected from General Motors.
The newest sub-compact sedan from Chevrolet based on new generation Beat
Chevrolet quite honestly has not been able to do wonders in the Indian market recently although their stall at the 2016 Auto Expo attracted lots of attention because of some of their promising future product lineup. The two products which definitely attracted all the attention was the Beat Essentia which is actually the sub-compact sedan based on the new generation Beat hatchback and the other was the Beat Active concept which was a Crossover based on the new generation Beat hatchback.
Now although there is still some time for the launch of new generation Beat hatchback in India but according to the recent report Chevrolet is actually planning to introduce the Beat Essentia sub-compact sedan in the Indian market next year.
Beat Essentia will definitely help Chevrolet with some volumes because this car will compete in one of the most competitive and growing market segments of India. We already have some interesting cars in this segment from Maruti, Hyundai and Ford while Tata will too enter this segment soon with their new compact sedan.
GM will be building parts of the Essentia locally which will help them to keep the prices down. According to the reports GM will be sourcing atleast 80 percent of the parts which will be used to manufacture the car.

Based on the Spark hatchback the Chevrolet Beat can be called as a car for the developing markets, while the Spark is a model for the already developed markets.
Earlier this year when Chevrolet showcased the Beat Activ Concept, it made a sensation indeed, and what was clear, was that the American automaker is working on a new Beat. Now the General Motor subsidiary has unveiled the entire new Beat line up which consists of three different models. The Chevrolet Beat being the regular model with revised guise the Beat Activ will be a cross hatchback and the Beat Essentia will be a new Beat based compact sedan. Other than that, Chevrolet has also plan to launch two other models, in form of facelifted Chevrolet Trailblazer which has been unveiled in Brazil few days ago and the new Cruze sedan. Apart from that the automaker has announced they won’t be launching the Spin MPV in Indian market.
The new Chevrolet Beat comes bearing the same silhouette of the outgoing model, but the front fascia looks more appealing and boxy, which resembles with the new Spark’s contour. Moreover the new Beat also takes design cues from the Beat Activ concept. Expected to come later this year in Indian market the Chevrolet Beat will surely grab eyeballs in the traffic.
