Volvo S90 will launch in India in September, 2016

Volvo might not be as popular in India as its German rivals are. But the Swedish auto manufacturer is becoming quite a known brand in the country in recent times. Few months back the company launched the XC90 premium SUV in India, which is the flagship SUV of the brand. Now the automaker is all set to launch its flagship sedan in the country. Expected to be launched in September, 2016 the Volvo S90 comes in two different variants, D4 and D5. Both the variants will be powered by a same engine, in different tunes albeit. Once launched, it will directly compete against the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series and very popular Mercedes Benz E Class in India.

The Swedish automaker has just commenced the pre launch booking process for the upcoming S90 luxury sedan. Here we will take a look at the facts and figures of the Volvo S90 sedan.

The Volvo S90 luxury sedan has been designed following the automaker’s Scalable Product Architecture or SPA design language. It has been built replacing the S80, and the car bears some design cues from the Volvo XC90 as well. At the front fascia it sports the ‘Thor’s Hammer’ design LED headlamps, which is seen in the XC90 as well. Another similarity is portrayed through the vertically slated large front grille. The lower bumper sports a wide air intake. At the side profile the car might remind you of the BMW 5 Series. It gets a coupe roofline, which undoubtedly enhances the appeal. The rear profile adorns large set of C shaped taillamps. The roof sports a panoramic sunroof. So far, the 4963 mm long luxury sedan looks muscular and elegant.

The Volvo S90 comes with a luxurious and premium interior, which not only offers an elegant vibe but also offers the premium comfort. The interior have been designed with design cue from the XC90 SUV. The interior sports a multifunction steering wheel wrapped in plush leather, a sleek instrument cluster. The centre console boasts a large tab like touchscreen display which houses the navigation, entertainment system. It also minimizes the usage of the control buttons. The dashboard, door trims come with wood treatment. Talking about the upholstery the S90 comes with plush premium quality leather upholsteries, while the cabin is pretty much spacious.

The India spec Volvo S90 will come available in two different variants, which are D4 and D5. Both the variants will be powered by a 1969 cc diesel engine, tuned in separate modes albeit. The D4 comes with a 2.0 litre diesel engine mated to an 8 speed Aisin Warner automatic gearbox, kicking out 190 hp of peak power and 400 Nm of peak torque. On the other hand the D5 variant also draws power from a 2.0 litre engine paired with 8 speed automatic gearbox and churning out 235 hp of peak power and 480 Nm of peak torque. Being sub 2000 cc diesel engine powered car the Volvo S90 will be out of the diesel ban in effect in the Delhi, NCR and Kerala.

Volvo is known for offering unique range of safety features in their cars. The S90 also comes with several safety features. Interestingly, this will be the first car in India to come equipped with radar based safety features, as Indian government has lifted the restriction on 36 – 38 MHz, 433 - 434.79 MHz, 302 - 351 kHz and 76 - 77 GHz to improve vehicle safety. Among other features the Volvo S90 gets adaptive cruise control, multiple airbags, automatic braking, lane keeping assist etc.

The Volvo S90 luxury sedan will directly take on its German competitors like Mercedes Benz E Class, which is certainly the best selling Mercedes Benz sedan in India. Among other the S90 will take on Audi A6 and BMW 5 Series. No wonder, Volvo’s job is not going to be easy.

Volvo Auto India will bring the S90 sedan as a CBU in India. Therefore the pricing of the car will be higher. The automaker is yet to announce the exact pricing of the S90 luxury sedan. But it can be priced between INR. 45 lakh to INR. 55 lakh. The D4 variant would be priced between INR. 45 lakh to INR. 50 lakh. While the D5 variant would be priced between INR. 50 lakh to INR. 55 lakh.
