Spec comparison: Tata Tiago vs Maruti-Suzuki Celerio
Celerio will be Tiago’s biggest competitor with an AMT
Getting firm grip in the highly competitive and crowded compact hatchback segment of Indian automobile market is not easy. As it seems, Tata Tiago is going to face lot of challenges from several models from different automakers. But Maruti-Suzuki being the most popular automaker of the country and the Celerio being an immensely popular hatchback, Tiago will surely lock horn with it.
Available in both petrol and diesel variants, and most importantly equipped with an AMT gearbox Celerio has become a huge crowd pooler in recent times. An AMT ensures, you don’t need to divert your attention toward clutch-gear action in bumper to bumper city traffic. Celerio also gets ABS and airbags at all the variants.

Indian customers want almost everything in one single car. No matter how small the amount of price is, the buyer will look for maximum out of the car. Tata Tiago looks stylish. Based on the new IMPACT design language from Tata Motors this car sports an appealing appearance, which looks very urban and upmarket compare to the Celerio. It gets a smiling grille with honeycomb design in piano black finishing accompanied by smoked lenses headlamps, chrome garnishing, and horizontally slated air intake at the lower bumper. The front fascia comes with a roundish appearance, which looks nice. The side profile is nicely sculpted with sharp creases running from above the front fender to the rear through the doors. The B pillars are blackened to give it a sporty appearance. The ORVMs sport side turning indicators, while the car gets diamond cut alloy wheels. The rear gets a roof spoiler with stop lamp mounted on it. The taillights come sharper.
Maruti Suzuki Celerio on the other hand doesn’t look as attractive as Tata Tiago. The front fascia gets large headlamps with an aggressive looking front grill consisting dual vertical chrome slats joining the headlamp clusters. The front bumper looks muscular with a larger slated air intake at the lower fascia and dual round fog lamps placed at both sides. The side profile gets side turning indicator integrated lamps, crisp character lines. The rear profile gets sharp taillights and a roof spoiler with high mounted stop lamps.
Dimensionally speaking, Tata Tiago gets a 3746 mm of length, while Celerio comes shorter with 3600 mm. Tiago is 47 mm wider than Celerio at 1647 mm, while Celerio comes taller. Although smaller than Tiago, but Celerio offers better boot space at rear with 265 litres of luggage capacity.

Tata Motors has equipped the Tiago with an upmarket interior which reflects comfort and style. It gets a multifunction steering wheel, dual round dial placed instrument cluster which also gets a digital display, a hexagonal centre console with piano black finishing, which houses a ConnectionNEXT infotainment system developed by Harman. The dashboard looks classy and it gets two AC vents at both sides highlighted by body coloured panel. The sound system consists of four speakers and four tweeters. Rear passengers get ample space for leg and knee. The 240 litres of boot space is crafted intelligently.
Maruti-Suzuki Celerio gets dual tone interior theme. It gets multifunction steering wheel, large dials at the instrument cluster. The centre console is ordinary with the entertainment system equipped with USB connectivity. It also gets electrically adjustable ORVMs, keyless entry, tilt adjustable power steering wheel. 265 litres of boot space at rear offers plenty of space for your luggage.
Tata Tiago will be offered in both petrol and diesel options. The petrol variant will get power from a 1.2 litre Revotron MPFi engine under the hood mated to a 5 speed manual transmission churning out 85 PS peak power and 114 Nm peak torque. The diesel variant on the other hand, is powered by a 1.05 litre Revotorq CRAIL engine paired with 5 speed manual transmission producing 70 PS peak power and 140 Nm peak torque. Both the variants come with Tata Motor’s Multidrive technology.
Maruti-Suzuki Celerio is also available in both petrol and diesel variants. The petrol variant gets power from a 1.0 litre K10B engine which gets a 5 speed manual transmission producing 68 PS peak power and 90 Nm peak torque. Interesting fact is, Celerio comes equipped with an AMT gearbox, which they call Auto Gear Shift technology. This AMT gearbox eliminates the usage of clutch pedal, although this not an entirely automatic transmission. The EZ drive as Maruti-Suzuki calls it; is a combination of automatic and manual transmission. It gets an M mode, in which you can shift gears manually. It is not as expensive as automatic transmission, while it delivers the comfort of automatic driving. This AMT gearbox is available in LXi and VXi variants only. It gets a fuel efficiency of 23.1 kmpl. The diesel variant on the other hand comes with an 800 cc DDiS engine under the hood paired with a 5 speed manual transmission and kicking out 47.6 PS peak power and 125 Nm peak torque.

Tata Tiago would be priced between INR. 3.6 – 5.5 lakh. The Maruti-Suzuki Celerio on the other hand is priced around INR. 5 lakh.
Tata Tiago is surely bringing fresh air in the congested compact hatchback segment, while the Maruti-Suzuki Celerio still has craze being a compact, comfortable car and equipped with AMT gearbox.
