The mid size SUV segment is not that crowded in Indian automobile market yet, but that doesn’t mean it is competition free. Two India bound next generation SUVs Ford Endeavour aka Everest and Toyota Fortuner which will be launched in the coming months are set to redefine the segment.

Both the vehicles have been in the Indian auto market for quite some time now. While Toyota Fortuner has became one of the most sold SUV’s in India, the Ford Endeavour on the other hand couldn’t actually capture the market share. Although the 2016 Ford Endeavour looks hot and it is expected to give the upcoming 2016 Toyota Fortuner some tough competition.

Ford has already showcased the new Endeavour which is also named as the Everest in their official website. The new generation Endeavour looks totally different from the outgoing version. It also comes powered by some anew and updated powertrains. On the other hand, the Toyota Fortuner too gets restyled and sleeker looking exterior. The 2016 Fortuner is surely a stunner. It also comes equipped with new powertrains and various other off roading features. Now the question arises, which one will actually be a better off roader?

As already mentioned above that both the SUV’s are arriving in the Indian auto market in the upcoming months, we tried to bring a spec sheet based comparison of these two upcoming SUV’s.


Both next generation Ford Endeavour and Toyota Fortuner comes with an enriched muscular look, they also promises to be spacious than before. While the Ford Endeavour gets its exterior designed in American style and features masculine proportions, the Toyota on the other hand gets sharp contours and in more stylish way. Both the SUV’s gets equipped with features like projector headlamps, chrome grille, large alloy rims and high ground clearance.

Dimensionally 2016 Ford Endeavour measures 4893 mm in length, 1862 mm in width, 1836 mm in height and 2850 mm wheelbase. The 225 mm of ground clearance is surely pretty impressive too. On the other hand the 2016 Toyota Fortuner comes with 4795 mm of length, 1855 mm of width, 1835 mm of height and 2750 mm wheelbase. The 193 mm of ground clearance comes shorter than Ford Endeavour. So far, 2016 Ford Endeavour comes much more spacious than 2016 Fortuner, while the better ground clearance indicates it can become a better off roader too compare to the Fortuner.

Both the Ford Endeavour and Toyota Fortuner are tough off roading vehicles and also features powerful powertrains under their hood.

The 2016 Ford Endeavour uses two different diesel engines, which comes in the form of 2.2 litre 4 cylinder diesel producing 158 hp peak power and bigger and more powerful 197 hp delivering 3.2 litre 5 cylinder diesel units. Both these engines are paired with either 6 speed manual or 6 speed automatic gearboxes, while the 3.2 litre variant is equipped with an All Wheel Drive (AWD) set up.

The 2016 Toyota Fortuner uses a lot less powerful engines than the Ford Endeavour. The Japanese auto maker has fitted their SUV with 2.4 litre 4 cylinder GD diesel churning out 150 hp peak power and a 2.8 litre 4 cylinder GD diesel unit delivering 177 hp. Both these engines are mated to either a 6 speed manual or 6 speed automatic transmission. The 2.8 litre variant is equipped with an AWD set up as well.

So far, the 2016 Ford Endeavour aka Everest with better power.

Both these cars are known as tough off roaders. The next generation versions are no different, and they are actually equipped with plenty of features which makes them an agile and rigid off roaders. Both Ford Endeavour and Toyota Fortuner variants gets an All Wheel Drive (AWD) technology, which is the must have for any off roading vehicle.

The Ford Endeavour also gets a tough body on frame design. It is also equipped with Terrain Management System (TMS), which actually has four distinctive settings like Normal, Snow/Gravel/Grass, Sand and Rock; this system allows the Endeavour to perform its jobs on different types of terrains and surface which includes everyday roads, sand, snow, and extreme rocky terrain with optimized performance. It is also enabled with Roll Stability Control (RSC), Electronic Stability Program (ESP), and traction control. The high ground clearance of 225 mm and 800 mm of wading depth makes the SUV a tough off roader.

The Toyota Fortuner might not be as powerful as the Ford Endeavour is, but the Japanese iconic model comes with plenty of surprising off roading features. It is equipped with Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with traction control. Further it gets Hill Start Assist (HAS), Downhill Assist Control (DAC), Tractor Sway Control (TSC) etc.


As it seems, the 2016 Ford Endeavour surely is a lot more powerful, agile and rigid than the 2016 Toyota Fortuner. We can tell more about it once it gets launched in few months.

The Toyota Fortuner has already launched in Australia and gets a new set of diesel engines under its hood which are not only powerful but fuel efficient at the same time. But when it comes to offroading I am pretty sure both the American as well the Japanese SUV will be able to take on any terrain with ease.
