The iconic and rare BMW has an interesting bcakground story

The classic car you are seeing in these images belonged to the ‘Kings of Rock and Rolls’ Elvis Presley. The US musician bought this car while he was actually doing his military service for the army in Germany. The iconic car seemed to have disappeared and after almost 50 years it was discovered in pretty bad shape. BMW then decided to restore the 507 with chassis number 70079 back to its formal glory.

After almost two years of exacting restoration work the now restored 507 will be showcased infront of the public at the prestigious Concours d’Elegance in Pebble Beach, California on 21st August. When the iconic singer took delivery of his prestigious BMW 507 on 28th December 1958, the roadster was finished in feather white colour and was powered by a V8 all aluminium engine which produced an impressive 150 Hp of power back then. The car also featured centre lock rims, black and white interior and Becker Mexico Radio.

Bringing this old iconic car of the legend back to life was not an easy job. Although the cars original parts and other components were all present and intact but the 507’s engine and gearbox were missing, while the rear axle too was actually a replacement part of an unknown origin. The car also had rust problems which was actually eating away the floor assembly. Even the cars seats were all torn and the instrument cluster too was missing.

BMW group Classic completely rebuilt the engine from spare parts. The 3.2 Litre V8 unit was reconditioned back to its original specification. However the engine was not given a number. The front frame carrier was also cut down to the early stage. While the wooden nailing which was used to fix the soft top in position was also reproduced using the same method and materials keeping the original process which was used back in the 1950’s. The car also received a fresh new coat of paint. The instrument cluster on the inside was also newly cast keeping in mind the original set. The seats too were reconstructed and the original subframes were kept in the newly constructed seats. The window winders and the door handles were re-manufactured in the 3D printed way based on the original dimensions.

The BMW 507 was one of the rarest cars from the brand and only 254 examples of the car was produced in between the year 1955-1959. Many celebrities from the bygone era actually owned the car and thus the roadster became a status symbol. The particular car owned by Elvis Presley definitely became more popular because it was lost for almost five decades.

BMW Group Classic Archives and American journalist Jackie Jouret, later discovered that the car owned by Elvis was the car which was delivered to the icon was not a new car infact it was previously used by race car driver Hans Stuck. The car was used in number of hillclimb races as well. Later it was also exhibited at the Frankfurt International Motor Show and was also used for test drives by the press.
As early as October 1957, Hans Stuck actually drove the car through Belgium and presented it to king Baudouin and later was showcased at the Turin Motor show. The same car also won the automobile beauty competition in Wiesbaden. The car also featured in the Bavaria feature film “Hula-Hopp Conny”.

Later it was bought by US soldier Presley while he was only 23 years of age.
