He is one of the biggest business tycoons of India, chairman of India’s largest and oldest business conglomerate. We have seen him very quiet at difficult times. As it seems he is a very private person, and world knows nothing about his life away from his office.
We are talking about Ratan Naval Tata, the ex chairman of Tata Group. For decades we have seen Mr. Ratan Tata pioneering the Indian automotive industry to a new dimension. It is no surprise, that Ratan Tata has been emotionally attached with Tata Motors. He made the impossible task possible with the Tata Indica and Tata Nano. To put it in a simple way, we can say, Ratan Tata is crazy about cars, in his personal life and professional life as well.
During his tenure as the chairman of Tata Group, he has been spotted many times behind his exotic car’s steering near his residence on South Bombay roads. It is also a known fact that every weekend he takes his cars for a spin. Now, as he has retired from the post, he invests more time for his exotic rides. He is also known as one of the few business tycoons around the world who loves to take the seat behind the steering wheel rather than being seated at the rear and driven by chauffeur. Ratan Tata has been seen pampering this beautiful ‘Rosso’ red Ferrari California on South Bombay roads during weekends. It was certainly the first of its kind when Mr. Tata took the delivery of this car. This car was named after the Ferrari Classic 250GT California. The exotic beauty is powered by a 4.3 litre V8 engine paired with a 7 speed dual clutch automatic gearbox, which delivers 460 PS peak power and 485 Nm maximum torque.
What he says: “It’s the most exhilarating car I have. The sound is fantastic and it turns heads.”
Not every other person owns a Maserati in India. The Quattroporte from the Italian auto maker is arguably one of the best looking sports sedans around the world. Power for this car is produced by a 4.7 litre V8 engine which churns out 430 PS peak power and 490 Nm maximum torque. The Quattroporte can reach 0-100 kmph in just 5.1 seconds.
What he says: “It’s softer than the Ferrari and is also terrific to drive.”
The entire automotive world knows about how Ratan Tata and his Tata Group revived Jaguar Land Rover. Despite being the owner of the British company he also owns an XFR from the luxury auto maker. The Jaguar XFR of Ratan Tata’s garage was specially built as per his choice. The beast is powered by a huge 5.0 litre V8 supercharger engine mated to an 8 speed automatic transmission, which kicks out 515 PS of peek power and 625 Nm maximum torque. It can reach 0-100 kmph in 4.9 seconds.
Ratan Tata owns a red coloured Jaguar F-Type convertible, which is his latest possession and it is certainly the most powerful possession of the Mumbai based business tycoon. It comes powered by a 5.0 liter turbocharged V8 petrol engine, which delivers 494 PS peak power and 625 Nm maximum torque.

There are certainly only a few people in India who own a Cadillac, and Ratan Tata is doyen among them. The General Motors made car is one of the iconic beauty produced by any American company. This car is known for its loud grunt beneath the hood and luxurious comfort. It comes powered by a 4.6 litre Northstar V8 engine paired with 6 speed automatic gearbox, which churns out 324 PS peak power.
What he says: “This roadster is one of my favourites. The acceleration is impressive and the suspension is quite stiff by American standards.”

Another American car from Tata’s garage is Chrysler Sebring. Mr. Tata bought this convertible nearly 17 years ago. The car is powered by a 2.5 litre engine mated to a 5 speed gearbox. Mr. Tata was so much impressed by this maroon coloured Chrysler Sebring, that he instructed his team in Tata Motors to paint the first Tata Indica prototype in same colour. Incidentally that was the first Indica prototype showcased in 1998 Geneva Motor Show.
What he says: “I just love the colour of this car. In fact, the Indica we first showcased in Geneva in 1998 was painted the same colour.”
One of the early possessions of Mr. Ratan Tata, this is presently just another car for him. But, still he takes care of this car as one of his prized possession.
What he says: “When I got it, it was terrific but it’s now just another car.”
Many business tycoons use this car as their daily drive, and Ratan being the head of the largest Indian conglomerate couldn’t stay out of the league. He owns a Mercedes Benz S Class to, and uses it as his daily ride, while the sports cars are basically for joy rides. This gorgeous and luxurious beast comes powered by a huge V12 petrol engine paired with 7 speed dual clutch gearbox, which kicks out 530 PS peak power and 830 Nm maximum torque.
What he says: “It’s for normal use and after the sports cars it feels like butter and goes like a glider!”

Although we don’t know about Ratan Tata’s affection for vintage cars, but this old Buick Super 8 has a special place at his star studded garage.
Beside Jaguar Ratan Tata is the owner of the Land Rover too. He owns an iconic Land Rover Freelander in his garage. This hugely popular luxury SUV is powered by an inline 4.0 litre diesel engine which is mated to a 6 speed automatic gearbox, and it churns out 190 PS peek power and 420 Nm maximum torque.
What he says: “It drives quite well and I love the red upholstery.”
Honda Civic is one popular car around the globe from the Japanese auto manufacturer. Many people love this car for its good handling quality, superior safety and comfortable riding capability. Ratan Tata too owns one and we have seen him driving his white Honda Civic in several occasions.
The last but not the least, Ratan Tata owns a Tata Indigo Marina, the Tata Indigo sedan based station wagon from his own company. He has a special purpose for this vehicle. He uses this car for moving his pet dogs.
What he says: “I’ve removed the backseat and put a mattress to take my dogs in it.”
