Indian customers are known for their love for compact small vehicles. The hatchbacks are naturally the most popular and most affordable cars in Indian market. They are easy to drive, easy to buy and easy to park. The hatchbacks are pretty much fuel efficient as well. Considering all the factors Indian customers more or often choose to buy a hatchback.
Almost every other auto manufacturer present in Indian market has at least one hatchback in their lineup. In recent times the hatchbacks are not just a small vehicle to transport. All the automakers are offering unique features with their hatchbacks.

Maruti-Suzuki has the largest fleet of hatchbacks in the country. This is also the largest brand in terms of sales and popularity in the country. Introduced in 1983 the Maruti-Suzuki 800 has been the second bestselling car of all time in India, right next to Hindustan Ambassador. It was the first people’s car of the country. Before being discontinued in 2013 the Maruti-Suzuki 800 has sold more than 2.66 million units. The small car was powered by a small but efficient 796 cc F8 series petrol engine. Transmission duty was done by a 4 speed manual gearbox, which was later upgraded to 5 speed manual gearbox. The car sold such a huge volume without any major changes. The car churned out 37 PS of peak power, which was enough for commuting in the city and around. Later Maruti-Suzuki offered a CNG kit for the popular hatchback.
Maruti-Suzuki Alto 800 is the direct successor of the Maruti-Suzuki 800. The car looks different than its predecessor, but it is as popular as its predecessor was. Recently the Indo Japanese automaker introduced a facelift version to the Alto 800. The facelift model comes with some mechanical changes, but no mechanical update at all. The power source for the car is a 796 cc F8D engine which is mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox. The engine churns out 48 PS of peak power and 69 Nm of peak torque. The new model gets a driver side air bag as the lone safety feature. It is priced between INR. 2.49 lakh to INR. 3.34 lakh.
Like any other Maruti-Suzuki model the WagonR is also a very popular model. It was first launched in 1999, and since then it has been one of the bestselling car from the auto manufacturer. The Maruti-Suzuki WagonR comes with a tallboy stance. Powered by a 998 cc three cylinder K10B engine this car churns out 68 PS of peak power and 90 Nm of peak torque. Transmission duty is done by a 5 speed manual gearbox and the car delivers a 18.9 kmpl of fuel economy. The small hatchback offers generous space inside the cabin offering comfortable journey for the occupants.
Moving away from Maruti-Suzuki, Chevrolet has an interesting car in Indian market which has been very popular and very successful in terms of sales. The Chevrolet Beat was introduced in the Indian market more than half a decade ago. Since then it has stayed in the best selling cars list. The Chevrolet Beat is about to receive a facelift soon, which is based on the Chevrolet Beat Activ concept. The Beat Activ concept was showcased at the 2016 New Delhi Auto Expo earlier this year. The new Beat looks very stylish and appealing. Although it retains the basic silhouette of the outgoing Beat, but the front fascia and other parts comes with subtle changes.
The new Beat will be available in both petrol and diesel engine options. The petrol engine is a 1.2 litre SMARTECH engine kicking out 78 PS of peak power and 106.5 Nm of peak torque. The diesel variant on the other hand gets a 1.0 litre SMARTECH engine generating 57 PS of peak power and 142.5 Nm of peak torque. Both the cars come with 5 speed manual transmission.
Ford Figo is a stylish compact hatchback from the American auto manufacturer. The car was launched almost a decade ago. Since then it has been a pretty popular model in the country. In 2015 Ford launched a new Figo, which came with a completely redesigned appearance. The new Figo looks aggressive and upmarket compare to the old model. The new Figo is available in three different engine options, including both the petrol and diesel.
The petrol segment includes two engine options. A 1.2 litre Ti-VCT engine mated to a 5 speed manual transmission generates 88 PS of peak power and 112 Nm of peak torque.
