What you see here are clear and close up images of what could be the first ever electric car to roll out of the country’s largest car manufacturer. Maruti stopped manufacturing diesel cars post the implementation of BS6 emission norms and has been promoting both petrol and CNG models for the past few years. Their next take could be on the EV segment which currently has the most affordable option in the form of the newly launched Tata Tigor EV.

While the company has remain tight lipped on its EV plans, most of us know that they have been testing EV mules for over 3 years now. The latest pictures, coming our way from Sandeep Singh suggest that this indeed is an electric car. if you look closely, there is no grille up front and no open passages that usually allow air to pas through to cool a conventional engine. As the car is running without any camouflage, it is safe to assume launch is around the corner, possibly around the festive season of Diwali.

When launched, the WagonR could be India’s first proper mass electric car with a possible price of about Rs 8 lakh. Given Maruti’s widest network around India, this could be the car to finally start the electric revolution in the country. As I told you above, Maruti has not shared any details, it is safe to assume it would offer a real world range of 200km. Top speed could be limited, keeping range in mind, to 100 or 120 km/h. The entire battery pack will be under the floor, hence, giving a lower centre of gravity to the car.

Visually, the car is based on the current WagonR but with a fully revised front end that makes it look far more sharper and modern. Headlights are now in the middle part of the bumper while the slim grille is flanked by sharp glass panels at each side. These house the indicators and could get DRLs too. The car also wears same set of alloy wheels as seen on the Ignis and tyre size could stand at 175mm. The rear is almost similar to that of the WagonR apart from a black out effect for the tail lamps. Looks cool, eh?

So if you have been waiting for a sub Rs 10 lakh EV that can seat 5, has ample boot space and comes with dependable technology, this could be the perfect fit. Fingers crossed.
