Ford has ceased local production in India and will only sell CBU imports
The upcoming Mustang Mach E will rival other full electric luxury SUVs from Audi, Mercedes and Jaguar. While it will be under-cut other EV SUVs, does it pack in enough?
Ford’s pulling the plug on Indian operations has surely come as a rude shock to all of us. While they will no more manufacturer cars in India, select dealerships will remain and sell CBU or completely built units of models like the Mustang, Raptor, Bronco and other models. These also include the popular EV variant of the pony or the Mustang and this is what you see here. Trust me on this, the Mustang Mach E will also go on to become one of the most popular luxury EVs that India will ever see.
Pricing and rivals
One of the key aspects that will make the Mach E a very interesting proposition is the fact that it will under-cut all other luxury EVs on sale in India. These include the Audi e-tron (from Rs 99.9 lakh), Jaguar I-Pace (from Rs 1.05 crore) and the Mercedes-Benz EQC from Rs 1.06 crore).
Ford’s Mustang Mach E carries a starting price of about Rs 32 lakh in the US market and with import duties in place, it will carry an ex-showroom price of about Rs 80-90 lakh here in India. Stand alone this sounds high but again, the Mach E will be positioned in the luxury EV space and hence, looks value for money enough.
Performance on tap
The Mach E ends up justifying the ’Mustang’ brand name and the pony positioned on its grille. Customers can pick from entry level version producing 266 bhp via the rear wheels to as much as 480 bhp on the GT AWD variant. Likewise, torque varies from 430 Nm to 860! This means the Mustang Mach E is capable enough to keep up with the fastest of Supercars, even in the lower power / torque variant. This model can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in just 5.2 seconds. The GT on the other hand does the same in 3.8 seconds. As this stage, it remains unknown which power / torque version will hit Indian roads. Ditto for the fact if Ford will get the AWD (all-wheel drive) models here or not. Fingers crossed!
The Mach E addresses one of the biggest worries that come from electric cars - range anxiety. Even the lower variant offer a range of as much as 330km as per EPA (American) test standards. Bigger battery packs bump up the range to almost 500km! For comparison, the Audi e tron offers a range of 379km to 484km depending on the battery pack size. The Ford Mustang Mach E support fast charging with 10 minutes of charging offering a range of 75km!
The Mach E keeps up with modern times, offering a long list of features that will keep owners happy. From a vertical 15.5 inch central touch screen to a 10.2 inch driver’s display, the Mach E also offers cool add-ons like a touch button on the pillars that open up the doors. And then you have a panoramic sunroof, 360 degree park camera, powered tail gate among others. It will also come with Ford’s famous SYNC 4 infotainment set-up.
The Mustang Mach E shall arrive on India shores later this year / early next year and will pave the way for other global products that will come as fully built in units.
