Maruti-Suzuki is certainly the biggest automaker in the Indian market, and the Indo Japanese automaker is trying to explore the new dimensions of the market in the country. In an attempt to do that the automaker has shifted its focus toward new segments like compact SUV, micro SUV.
The 2016 New Delhi Auto Expo, earlier this year in February was a vital event for the company to showcase its new products for the Indian market. In the biennial event Maruti-Suzuki unveiled two very important products, in form of the Vitara Brezza compact SUV, Ignis micro SUV. The Vitara Brezza has garnered a large customer base within very short time after launch, while the Maruti-Suzuki Ignis is all set to launch in September, 2016. Interestingly, this car will be the brand’s first step into the sub compact crossover segment.
Here we will take a look at the 2016 Maruti-Suzuki Ignis micro SUV.
WHERE IT CAME FROM
The Suzuki Ignis was first introduced by the automaker in 2000 as the replacement of Suzuki Cultus. The new generation Suzuki Ignis is based on the Suzuki IM-4 concept which was displayed at the 2015 Geneva International Motor Show. Later the sub compact crossover was showcased in its production version avatar, which was first showcased at the 2016 Tokyo Motor Show earlier this year.
THE COMPACT AND INTERESTING DESIGN
Maruti-Suzuki Ignis is still under development process, but we have already got the glimpse of the design it will feature. The car looks compact and stylish with a bit of muscular tone around the body. The Ignis sports two unique shaped headlamps with U shaped LED daytime running lights, and the headlamp clusters are positioned in such way, which looks like they have been blended into the front grille making it look like a single unit. The front grille features sleek chrome lining up and below, while the middle also gets a sleek strip, with the brand logo positioned at the middle. The front bumper looks muscular with larger rectangular air dams and chrome garnished fog lamp housings. Other design elements include flared wheel arches, sleek character lines, side turning indicator integrated wing mirrors, floating roof, large taillamps, a bit unusual looking hatch.
Dimensionally the Maruti-Suzuki Ignis measures 3700 mm in length, 1660 mm in width, 1595 mm in height and 2438 mm in wheelbase. The car will also feature 180 mm of ground clearance.
WHATS THERE INSIDE
Although the interior of the production version Maruti-Suzuki Ignis is a mystery, but the interior is expected to come impressively designed. It would feature a multifunction steering wheel, a sporty dual tone theme, a large analog dial sporting instrument cluster, the centre console will be in two parts; while the upper will receive a touchscreen infotainment system, and the lower part will come bearing the buttons and switches. Despite being a compact car it would offer sufficient space to the occupants.
WHAT ARE THE POWER SOURCES
The Maruti-Suzuki Ignis will be available in both petrol and diesel engines options. The petrol engine is a 1.2 litre inline four cylinder DOHC unit churning out 84 PS of peak power and 115 Nm of peak torque. While the diesel version gets a 1.3 litre engine under the hood generating 75 PS of peak power and 190 Nm of peak torque. Expect the engines to come with fuel efficiency of 22 kmpl and 29 kmpl respectively for the petrol and diesel variants. The transmission duty will be done by a CVT gearbox instead of an AMT gearbox, which was rumored earlier.
In Japan the Suzuki Ignis gets an All Wheel Drive (AWD) configuration, while in India it is very likely to receive both the AWD and Front Wheel Drive (FWD) configurations, while the other features would be lane management system, parking camera at front, side and rear.
Maruti-Suzuki Ignis will come featuring several safety measurements, which will include dual front airbags for both the driver and co passenger, ABS, EBD, hill decent control.
THE NEXT NEXA PRODUCT
Nexa is the premium dealership of the Maruti-Suzuki, and the Ignis would be the next model from the company after the Baleno premium hatchback and Maruti-Suzuki S-Cross crossover. Apart from these the upcoming Maruti-Suzuki Baleno RS will also be sold through the Nexa dealership, and the Ignis will be the entry level premium model from the automaker in the country.

Maruti-Suzuki Ignis will be coming with an affordable price tag which will be around INR. 5 lakh to INR. 7lakh.
WHO ARE THE COMPETITORS
If we see in terms of segment, the Maruti-Suzuki Ignis doesn’t have any direct competitors in the country, but the Mahindra KUV100 will give it a close competition, that can be well assumed.
