Menu

The X1 is one popular entry level compact Crossover from the premium Auto manufacturer BMW, launched almost 6 years ago and it was a grand success across the globe and sold more than 730,000 units worldwide. Although this was a much smaller vehicle compared to bigger X series SUV like the X3, X5 and X6 but the X1 still carried all the styling cues from the bigger BMW X models which set it apart from the rest of the Crossover available out there.

Recently BMW introduced the second generation X1 and there is no doubt in the fact that it looks more mature, proportionate and dynamic than its predecessor. Apart from the styling the X1 also hosts a couple of new features which is worth mentioning including the full LED headlamps as an option, Dynamic damper controls, BMW heads up display and lastly the Driving Assistant Plus system.

The new X1 is also taller than the previous generation vehicle which also has raised the seating position of both the front and rear passengers which actually is an added advantage for the person driving the SUV because they can now get a commanding view of the road ahead. The space inside the Crossover has also increased comparatively which means more seating comfort inside for the passengers. What is even more interesting is also the fact that for the very first time BMW has launched any SUV with the front wheel drive system, the X1 uses the new UKL platform which is also used by the Mini Cooper. Beside the front wheel drive BMW has also equipped the new generation X1 with two petrol and three diesel units which also belongs from the family of BMW’s new family of engines.

Overall the new X1 looks loaded and comes with plenty of new and exciting features which make the new X1 more competitive and fierce rival. Although there is some time left before its launch meanwhile get all the details of this new compact Crossover here.

EXTERIOR

"the new X1 looks muscular and proportionate than the previous generation vehicle and because of the bigger X model styling cues"

If you have noticed the other X BMW models, they all have a rugged proportion and a powerful presence and the new generation X1 is no different because it too borrows the same styling cues from the bigger SUV’s like the X3 and the X6.

Towards the front the X1 gets a restyled front kidney grille while the headlamp units too looks all new and similar to what you will find in the new BMW models the Bavarian auto manufacturer as already mentioned earlier is also offering full LED headlamps as an option. Towards the lower front half the X1 received larger air intakes for more aggressive feel and also slightly bigger fog lamps.

While if you view the side profile things will looks identical to the previous generation Crossover because the new-gen X1 still carries the dynamic line towards the lower section of the vehicle while the side skirts too is present even in the new X1. So what exactly has changed in the side profile? Well you do get a larger glass area which is a huge advantage for the occupants because they will now get a more commanding view of their surrounding while the roofline also seems to be more raked which actually has give the Crossover dynamic proportion, you cannot miss the false roof rail which actually works for the X1. The X1 comes with standard 18 inch wheels while the customer also has the options to fit larger 19 inch wheels too.

Step towards the rear of this vehicle and you will notice that the rear taillamps looks all new and quite honestly these new taillamps gets the LED effect which looks premium. While the twin exhaust at the rear makes things appear sportier which is actually much needed for a change, we also loved the way the tailgate has been finished with the little roof spoiler added towards the rear.

Overall the new X1 looks muscular and proportionate than the previous generation vehicle and because of the bigger X model styling cues the new-gen X1 looks even more appealing and serious with the touch of added sportiness to its exterior.

INTERIOR

"The cockpit for example has been more inclined and angled towards the driver which also includes the centre console controls."

BMW has focused on how to increase the interior room of the X1 and as a result the occupants will get to enjoy additional head and leg room, the leg room of the rear passengers has increased by almost 1.5 inches while BMW also provides an optional adjustable rear seat which allows 2.6 inches of leg room.

The cockpit for example has been more inclined and angled towards the driver which also includes the centre console controls. The rear seats can be optionally be split 40:20:40 which means all the three seat sections can be individually or jointly be folded or reclined to increase or decrease the cargo space. The cargo load area or space has also now increased while the standard automatic tailgate adds an extra advantage.

Coming to the dashboard of the new X1 it now features better styling and thanks to the 6.5 inch floating display integrated into the dashboard one can operate the iDrive operating system more easily. The standard equipment lists includes alarm with remote-controlled central locking and keyless engine ignition, electric window controls, electrically adjustable and heated exterior mirrors, a multifunction leather steering wheel adjustable for height and reach, a rain sensor including automatic headlight control and Dynamic Cruise Control.

While the passenger compartment at the rear gets larger door pockets for more storage space, nets in backrest of the driver, the driver and the front passenger to enjoys the privilege of integrated storage compartments in the arm rests for storage.

Lastly the neat looking dashboard too looks new and the addition of horizontal aluminum strip adds a more premium appearance to the dash while the smaller AC vents gives the dash a clean look. The X1 also comes with some other important st6andard features which include a seven speaker audio system.

BMW also offers an optional M sports package with the X1 which includes sports seats and paddle shifters. Before I forget let me also inform you that the X1 now also comes with Heads up Display unit which projects all the driving related information directly on the windscreen which is also a feature that you will notice in some other bigger X models.

COMPETITION

MERCEDES-BENZ GLAS-CLASS

The GLA-Class is the latest offering from Mercedes to compete with the rivals like X1 and the Audi Q3. This is a compact Crossover which shares the same platform with the A, B and the CLA-Class. The GLA is launched with two petrol and two diesel engine options. In India the GLA Class is available with both petrol and diesel variant which produces 135 KW and 100 KW of peak power respectively and 300 NM of torque.

CONCLUSION

We absolutely loved the new X1 styling and added features both on its exterior as well as interior. Although what we loved the most is that BMW has also taken care of the interior room and now this compact Crossover comes with extra bit of room for both its front as we all rear seats passengers. The refreshed new engine too is a boon for the Crossover which provides better power delivery along with improved fuel efficiency.
This is also the very first time that the X1 ditches its RWD and adapts FWD which will be preferred by many. The new-gen X1 will showcased in some upcoming auto shows and will be launched towards the month of October and we Indians have to wait until the next year to get a glimpse of this Crossover.

Press Release

The new BMW X1. Urban all-rounder delivers boundless driving pleasure

The new BMW X1 – the successor to the model that blazed the trail for this class of car – treats the premium compact segment to an even more potent shot of Sports Activity Vehicle DNA. The second generation of this successful model, more than 730,000 units of which have now been sold, takes to the stage with a body design straight out of the BMW X model mould. The interior of the new BMW X1, meanwhile, offers significantly more space for passengers and luggage, a cutting-edge premium ambience and functionality grounded in solid engineering. Four-cylinder engines from the BMW Group’s latest generation of power units, an efficiency-optimised version of the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system and newly developed chassis technology all help to palpably enhance sporting ability and ride comfort compared to the outgoing model – with fuel consumption and emissions reduced by up to 17 per cent, model-on-model.

Alongside its market-leading dynamics and efficiency, a host of innovative equipment features also help to secure the new BMW X1 its stand-out position in the segment. Among the items on the options list are full-LED headlights, Dynamic Damper Control, the BMW Head-Up Display and the Driving Assistant Plus system.

A typical BMW X model: sturdy proportions, impressive variability and established premium characteristics.

Rugged proportions, a powerful presence and dynamic lines lend the new BMW X1 a commanding appearance and highlight its status as the youngest member of the BMW X model family. The new model has grown in height compared to its predecessor (+53 millimetres), which has helped increase the spaciousness of the interior. And its significantly raised seating position (+36 millimetres at the front, +64 millimetres at the rear) optimises the driver’s view out over the road.

Knee room in the rear has increased by 37 millimetres in standard specification and by up to 66 millimetres with the optionally adjustable rear seat, while the 505-litre boot capacity is 85 litres larger than that of its predecessor. Folding down the standard-fitted 40:20:40 rear seat backrest, which can also be specified in angle-adjustable form as an option, allows load capacity to be expanded to as much as 1,550 litres. The optional folding front passenger seat backrest and a rear seat bench which can slide 13 centimetres fore and aft offer additional variability.
The interior design of the new BMW X1 combines the driver-focused cockpit design that has become a hallmark of the brand’s models with touches promoting authoritative, SAV-style driving pleasure and a contemporary premium ambience. Standard equipment includes air conditioning, an audio system with USB and AUX-in sockets, and the iDrive operating system, whose 6.5-inch display is integrated into the instrument panel in freestanding monitor form. Meanwhile, the Advantage, Sport Line, xLine and M Sport packages available as an alternative to standard specification open the door for targeted individualisation.

New generation of engines, efficiency-optimised xDrive all-wheel-drive system.

The second-generation BMW X1 (fuel consumption combined: 6.4–4.1 litres/100 km [44.1–68.9 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 149–109 g/km) lines up with an all-new selection of engines. Two petrol and three diesel units will be available from launch in October 2015, all of which have four cylinders and are members of the BMW Group’s new engine family. Outputs range from 110 kW/150 hp to 170 kW/231 hp. The engines link up with either a six-speed manual gearbox or an eight-speed Steptronic unit, both of which are new developments.

The xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system also takes its place in the new BMW X1 in a further developed form. The weight-saving, compact and efficient system uses an electro-hydraulically controlled multi-plate clutch to distribute drive between the front and rear axle just as required for the situation at hand. Joining the fray in the BMW X1 sDrive20i and BMW X1 sDrive18d, meanwhile, is a front-wheel-drive construction which has been developed to deliver the driving dynamics typical of the brand and has already proved its mettle in the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer.

Premiere in the BMW X1: Head-Up Display and Driving Assistant Plus.

The change of BMW X1 generations also brings significant advances in the field of intelligent connectivity. A new addition to the range of BMW ConnectedDrive features is a BMW Head-Up Display which, as in the larger BMW X models, projects driving-related information directly onto the windscreen. The BMW X1 can now also be specified with the Driving Assistant Plus line-up of the Active Cruise Control system with Stop & Go function, Lane Departure Warning, Traffic Jam Assistant, Collision Warning and Pedestrian Warning with City Braking function. These systems are complemented by an up-to-the-minute selection of apps allowing customers to add to the car’s comfort, navigation and infotainment functionality, as desired.
