2016 BMW 1 Series Compact Sedan

2016 BMW 1 Series Compact Sedan

India’s largest selling luxury car brand BMW started their compact car venture in 1993 with the 3 Series (E36), which later found its way into the 1 Series in 2004 after the discontinuation of 3 Series liftback in 2004. The 1 series has seen several upgradations. BMW decided to continue the 3 and 5 door hatchbacks as the 1 Series, while the 2 door coupe and convertible received a new badge, 2 Series. The Bavarian brand has been working to expand their 1 series lineup, which gave birth to the idea of a compact sedan in the segment. The 1 series compact sedan is based on the same UKL platform of the German auto maker, which is seen in the 1 series hatchbacks.

In September, 2014 the materialized version of the 1 Series sedan first came into light. TopSpeed.com snapped a few spyshots of the camouflaged 1 Series sedan being tested. Later a few days ago at the Auto Guangzhou 2015 we have seen BMW unveiled a new compact sedan christened as BMW Concept Compact Sedan, which is nothing but the 1 Series sedan itself. The new compact sedan is expected to hit the markets sometime during mid 2016. This car will come equipped with a Front Wheel Drive (FWD) system, while the prime rivals against it will be the Mercedes Benz CLA and Audi A3, significantly both of them is equipped with FWD.

TopSpeed.com has published a few rendered images, from where we can get an idea how this BMW sedan will look like. There is no news about this car being tested on Indian roads, but we hope we can catch a glimpse of this car at the upcoming 2016 New Delhi Auto Expo.

This Will How The BMW 1 Series Compact Sedan Will Look In Reality

This Will How The BMW 1 Series Compact Sedan Will Look In Reality

BMW unveiled the compact sedan concept recently at the Guangzhou Auto show in China and there was nothing too fancy about it. Only recently we came across this rendered image of production variant of compact sedan concept could look like. This is not an unknown fact anymore that BMW is already testing the 1 series sedan and it will most probably be launched in the International market towards the beginning on next year while we also expect that the Bavarian premium auto giant won’t delay its launch in the Indian market as well which definitely is one of the popular compact car markets of the world.

The rendered image of the car definitely has subtle difference compared to the concept showcased at the show take for example the front fascia headlamps looks more realistic while the kidney grille too has been finished in Black. The side profile of the car looks almost identical to the concept the only difference is that it gets more conventional door handles. Apart from the door handles the wheel design too looks more realistic and before we forget yes! The rear view mirrors too look complete with the integrated side indicators. We also loved the Blue paint that has been used on the rendered car.

The new 1 series based compact sedan will use the same platform which also underpins the 2 series Active tourer model. Unlike other products we can expect that this upcoming sedan will be based on front wheel drive architecture but there will also be an All wheel drive variant on offer too. As far as its drivetrains are concerned we expect that this compact sedan will use transversely mounted 3 and 4 cylinder diesel and petrol engines.

The upcoming compact sedan will take on the likes of Audi A3, Mercedes-Benz CLA once it is launched in the market.

2015 BMW Concept Compact Sedan

2015 BMW Concept Compact Sedan

Compact sedan is one of the highly competitive and popular segments in the Asian auto market. German auto manufacturer BMW seems to have taken keen interest in their potential growth chance in the segment. They recently showcased their concept compact sedan prototype in the Auto Guangzhou 2015. The concept compact sedan comes bearing striking resemblance with present BMW 3 Series at the front profile, although on a bit smaller note. Moreover, once this concept compact sedan comes out as production, it will directly compete against the Mercedes Benz CLA Class and Audi A3. When it hits the production, it is expected to come as the BMW 1 Series sedan. Although this concept sedan comes in the compact segment, but the amount of space and luxury it offers, don’t let us think twice about the compactness of this car.

BMW’s vision behind this car is clear from the statement of Mr. Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. He said, “The BMW Concept Compact Sedan reveals the potential we see in a compact sedan. It not only gives the driver and passengers generous amounts of space within a compact area but does so while providing the sporting ability you’d expect from BMW and an elegance otherwise only available in large BMW sedans. The quality and intrinsic value of the BMW Concept Compact Sedan are clear signals of our premium intentions for the car.”

As we have seen the concept prototype, it seems that the car is production ready. Now the question is will BMW be able to bring new wave of design, thinking in the already congested compact sedan segment? Let’s take a closer look at the BMW Concept Compact Sedan.

BMW 1 Series Sedan Spotted Testing Will Rival A3 and CLA (Spy Images)

BMW 1 Series Sedan Spotted Testing Will Rival A3 and CLA (Spy Images)

Just when you thought BMW is doing nothing to grab any sort of attention or market share in the entry level luxury sedan market of the World which is currently dominated by its other German rivals like Mercedes Benz and Audi. AutoSohu was able to click some images of a compact sedan being tested in China which surely will blow your mind.

According to the reports the car which was covered in some heavy camouflage is the upcoming entry level sedan from the Bavarian auto giant which will take on its competitor like the Audi A3 and the Mercedes CLA in the near future. The 1 series sedan (codenamed F52) is based on the UKL1 platform which also underpins the Mini hatchback and will also most probably share the same powertrain with the 1 series hatch which by the way recently received a facelift and also some new engines.

Now this entry level premium sedan will have a lot of responsibility on its shoulder because it will come in the market to compete with some already established players of the game like the Audi A3 and the CLA so this has to look stylish and come in comparison to the beauty pageant winner CLA but will also have to handle well to beat its other rival the A3.

Expect the new sedan to come out in the market by next year and while the report also suggests that the front face will look identical to the recently launched 1 serieshatchback which by the way is looking more dynamic and sporty compared to the pre-facelift variant while the rear should take some styling cues from the existing 3 series sedan.

2016 BMW 1 Series Hatchback Caught Testing (Spy Shots)

2016 BMW 1 Series Hatchback Caught Testing (Spy Shots)

BMW 1 series is the entry level car from BMW that is available with us at this moment, known for its impressive drive and handling abilities and interior comfort the front wheel drive hatch is quite popular amongst the crowd. Recently with the increasing competition from the other premium manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz and Audi BMW had to really update their aging 1 series which is definitely not the looker of this segment.

Recently our spy shot photographers caught the next generation camouflaged 1 series hatch in action, now although the lower half of the hatch was covered in heavy camouflage but surely we can inform you that the next generation hatch surely won’t be getting a huge amount of changes on its exterior. From the front we can make out that the kidney shaped grilles appears larger while the headlamp units looks much similar to the BMW 2 series. Towards the side profile nothing seems to really catch our attention though and quite frankly this is still in its first stage of development process so BMW surely will be making lot of changes further to the hatch. Towards the rear of the car the tail lamp though looks like they have been restyled and also gets the new pattern and LED treatment.

The Topspeed spy shot photographers were also able to click some images of the interior of the next generation hatch and the images reveals that the new hatch will be getting some significant changes, The central console looks clean and although the car you are seeing in the images comes with manual gearbox but it is available in the Indian market with the 8 speed automatic transmission. The dashboard too looks slightly different from the current generation car; however the steering wheel and the instrument cluster remains unchanged even in this new generation car.

OVERVIEW 2013 BMW 1 Series

2013 BMW 1 Series

There was much hype when BMW launched the X1 in the Indian market few years back, it was their entry level offering for the Indian buyers. Then the demand for the compact premium car market began to rise from the previous year and Mercedes benz launched their A class and B class hatchbacks to compete with other cars in this segment. So BMW also wanted to step in this market segment so they have planned to launch the 1 series which is their 5 door premium compact hatchback by this year’s September. Although the X1 was very popular when it was launched in the Indian market but slowly it lost its charm to the Audi SUV Q3 maybe because Audi proper SUV stance and powerful engine are more appealing than the crossover styling of the X1. So in order to gain their lost position BMW will be launching this premium hatchback the 1 series in the Indian market.

UPDATE 03/09/2013: BMW has announced the 1-series hatchback with two engine options. One is a 2.0 liter turbo charged diesel engine (as expected) that generates 143bhp of maximum power and 320 nm of massive torque and a 1.6 liter turbo petrol unit which generates an impressive 136bhp of maximum power and 220Nm of torque. Both the engines are mated to a ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox.

BMW to Launch the 1-Series in India this September

BMW to Launch the 1-Series in India this September

BMW is all set to launch their A class rivalling hatchback on the 3rd of September, 2013. People who have been looking forward to the launch of the 1-Series in India, ever since its inception a few years ago, can now have something to rejoice.

The India bound 1-series will be offered in both petrol and diesel variants, though we aren’t sure of the engine line-up. It is heard that BMW might launch the 1.6-liter turbocharged unit which generates about 136bhp of maximum power and 220Nm of torque, which is then mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

As far as the diesel engine is concerned, BMW is expected to offer the 2.0-liter four cylinder engine which generates more power than the petrol engine. The diesel engine will generate 143bhp of maximum power and 320Nm of torque.

As far as the luxury is concerned, the 1 series adorns a well equipped interior and sporty looking dashboard, though the space provided in the interior is not plenty enough at the rear, making it a squeeze for 3 people..

You can catch the entire review of the international BMW 1 series while we wait for its official arrival on Indian soil.

Video: Sachin Tendulkar Tackles the BMW 1-Series

Video: Sachin Tendulkar Tackles the BMW 1-Series

From this video, one can infer that the Little Master is quite enjoying his retirement from cricket, all thanks to his contract with the Bavarian Giant.

Prior to its launch date on September 3rd, BMW has uploaded a video that pits Sachin against FIA GT1 Driver Armaan Ebrahim, both in a BMW 1-Series. And, to our amazement, he not only knows how to get his hands dirty with a cricket bat but also behind the wheel. No wonder he was chosen to be their brand ambassador...

Aiming to grab some market share from its scorn rival, the popular Mercedes A-Class, the Beemer will have the added advantage of being built-up locally in its Chennai plant, which translates to a much more competitive pricing of around INR 22-24 lakhs.

Already available for pre-booking, Beemer is luring the initial hundred customers by offering them a complimentary BMW Service Inclusive Plus maintenance package. That should make some people look away from the A-Class, for now.

One thing that we’d like to point from the video is that the Sports button doesn’t make your car "move faster", It just increases throttle response, gear changes, steering response that makes the car more lively to drive. Not like some NOS kit, as the video depicts.

BMW 1-series sedan to be out by 2016. Rival to the CLA and A3

BMW 1-series sedan to be out by 2016. Rival to the CLA and A3

Reports in the media of late have suggested that BMW is not planning a sedan to rival the recently revealed Mercedes CLA and the Audi A3. According to Car Magazine UK however BMW is definitely launching a 1-series sedan which is expected to be launched in 2016.

Like the CLA the 1-series sedan too would be built on a new platform which will support many future BMW models and like the CLA the 1-series sedan will be front wheel drive. Prices of this entry level sedan in the UK would start from well under 20lakhs. BMW last year showed the Active Tourer concept which uses a front wheel drive platform and the manufacturer has also said that it would use the 2013 Mini’s front-wheel drive platform for its cars.

Mini has also confirmed that it would be launching a 4 door sedan by 2015 for markets like India and China and the BMW 1-series and the Mini sedan could share a few things in common. The collaboration with Mini would bring the cost of the sedan significantly down. BMW and Mini aim to manufacturer over will a million compact cars using the new front wheel drive platform and the biggest challenge facing BMW with the 1-series sedan would be to price and position it distinctively separate from the 3-series.

Though it’s only speculative till now but the sedan could use a 3 and 4 cylinder diesel and petrol engines. On offer could be a 1.5-litre diesel in two different states of trims and the 2-litre petrol would also come in 2 different states of trim.

From the renderings on the net it seems that the 3-series would look like a notchback and the styling could resemble the 3-series. In the future a 1-series M variant could also be offered to rival the CLA 45 AMG.

2012 BMW 1-series

2012 BMW 1-series

There lies a pot of gold waiting to be discovered and auto manufacturers are going to fight for it. There is an attack on our moolah and the Germans are leading the assault. An invasion if you like. The luxury car segment continues to grow and one of the most exciting launches this year will be the all new BMW 1-series. The 1-series went on sale internationally in September of 2011 and the 1-series hatchback (codename: F20) is expected to be launched in India in the second half of 2012. The hatchback is the smallest and cheapest in the BMW range and the 5 door hatch has great potential. The sales of the X1 has already given BMW reason for joy and the manufacturer would feel confident that a sub 20lakh BMW would be just right for the Indian market. BMW has also increased the capacity of its plant to 10000 units per year indicating that it expects the hatch to sell in strong numbers. Internationally the 1-series has impressed everyone with its performance, mechanical refinement and desirability, and if the manufacturer can price it around 18lakhs, the hatch would in all probability carve out a new niche for itself as a powerful, premium rear-drive hatchback.
