Audi A6 facelift spied in the snow

Audi A6 facelift spied in the snow

Audi is set to unveil a facelift version of the popular A6 model in the coming months. The official launch of the 2015 Audi A6 will take place at the Paris Motor Show later this year. Ahead of the car’s launch, test mules have been spotted undergoing cold weather testing. Our friends over at CarScoop have published the images of the upcoming A6 Avant which don’t reveal much apart from a few bits.

The exterior styling of the new A6 won’t see a revolutionary change. However the headlamp cluster and the tail lamp graphic is where most of the tweaks have been made. Apart from these minor updates, the A6 retains its clean lines. The front end is still dominated by that Audi grille while the DRLs have been moved from underneath the headlamp graphic. The rear lights feature angular graphics with a Lambo-like fork treatment.

The India launch of the 2015 Audi A6 is expected to happen post the Paris motor show debut of the new model. That said, the engine and drivetrain will remain the same with a 2.0-liter TDI and 3.0-liter TDI Quattro on offer.

Long wheelbase versions of sedans a possibility. Audi looking at the A4L and A6L, BMW and Mercedes considering options too

Long wheelbase versions of sedans a possibility. Audi looking at the A4L and A6L, BMW and Mercedes considering options too

Audi has already launched the A8L in India and the manufacturer could now follow that up by introducing the A4L and the A6L in India. At the recently concluded Beijing Motor Show the German manufacturer had unveiled the 2012 A4L and the A6L and the stretched versions of Audi’s luxury sedans are primarily made for the Chinese market. Like the Chinese consumers who prefer roomy back seats, the long-wheelbase version of the A4 and the A6 would make perfect sense for India because the prospective India buyer of these luxury sedans also gives more importance to backseat comfort rather than driving dynamics.

The A6L is 5015 mm long, 1874 mm wide and 1455 mm high with a 3012 mm wheelbase as compared to standard A6 which is 4915 mm long, 1874 mm wide, 1455 mm high with a wheelbase of 2912 mm. The A4L is 4763 mm long, 1826 mm wide, 1426 mm high with a wheelbase of 2869 mm as compared to the standard A4 which is 4710 mm long, 1826 mm wide, 1426 mm high with a wheelbase of 2808 mm. Audi sells both the stretched and regular version of their luxury sedans in China and with the Chinese market being much bigger than the Indian market, there is enough room for both these models to coexist. The latest-generation A4L and A6L are made by Sino-German joint venture FAW Volkswagen. In China BMW has also launched stretched versions of the 3 and 5-series and there is a similar long wheelbase version also of the Mercedes Benz E-class.

Passenger comfort is greatly improved in the long wheelbase version of the A6L and the Chinese market has embraced the long wheelbase in recent years. With the Indian luxury car market also growing at a good rate, it is a definitive possibility in the near future that we too get the stretched version of not just the A4 and the A6 but also of BWM and Mercedes models.

2011 Audi A6

2011 Audi A6

Audi is going all out and the recently launched A6 is an example of that. This all-new model, the seventh generation of the A6, which looks like a shrunken A8 is what Audi believes is an extraordinarily good sedan and will help the manufacturer increase its market share and become the leading luxury car manufacturer in India. The new A6 is lighter and the body uses a hybrid construction with 20 per cent in aluminum including axle components, cross members, fenders, hood, boot and doors. It also gets adaptive air suspension with electronically controlled damping as standard. On paper the latest A6 has improved a lot from the model it replaces and we guess Audi’s confidence in the A6 comes from knowing that the A6 has everything to top the charts in the segment. With prices starting from Rs38,76,298 to Rs47,24,659 for the diesel and Rs41,02,270 to Rs47,29,688 for the petrol ex-showroom New Delhi, is the new A6 as good as Audi claims?

2011 Audi A6 2.0 TDI

2011 Audi A6 2.0 TDI

Audi had launched the latest variant of the A6 sedan in India earlier this year to take the fight to the BMW 5-Series which has been the segment leader since its launch. Audi has now launched a 2-litre engine in the A6 which the company hopes will give a big boost to the sales since this variant will cost nearly 10lakhs cheaper than the bigger 3-litre diesel variant. With the smaller diesel engine the A6 now starts from Rs37,70,000 ex-showroom.

With the use of aluminium and high-tech steels, the Audi A6 is extremely light and stiff and safe at the same time. The new A6 borrows its design from the A8 and stays true to the brand philosophy with the long engine hood and low roofline. The LED headlights are optional and inside the cabin is premium looking curved dash panel, special ambient lights, and the MMI operating system. The A6 is 4.92 meters long, 1.87 meters wide and 1.46 meters high and can be bought in either a front wheel drive or the quattro permanent all-wheel drive system. The transmissions choice based on the engine version includes a manual six-speed, a continuously variable multitronic and S-tronic.
