The A3 surely made lot of news when it entered the Indian market last year and why not it was the cheapest offering from Audi which provided more space than a premium hatchback. The A3 was made available with both diesel as well petrol drivetrain which actually gave the customers wider variety of options as well. When it was first launched in the Indian market it had no such competitors but after Mercedes-Benz saw the potential in this particular segment they introduced the CLA which was also a compact sedan offering and was priced almost in the same margin as the A3. After Mercedes introduced the CLA Audi felt the pressure because there was no doubt in the fact that the CLA was the best looking car on road amongst the duo.

Now after almost two years after the introduction of the third generation A3 in the International market Audi decided to introduce a facelift variant of the sedan and our spy photographers were also able to catch a glimpse of the car while it was being tested for the very first time. The facelift A3 definitely will get some cosmetic upgrades to both its front as well as rear profile while we also expect there will be some changes made inside the cabin and under its hood as well.

We are perhaps the very first Indian website to provide you some exclusive images of the facelift A3 while it was being tested in snow recently.

2014 Audi S3

2014 Audi S3

Just like Mercedes-Benz AMG products Audi S versions are meaner, more powerful and luxurious counterpart of the specific standard products. When Audi launched their entry level A3 sedan in the International market it made everyone happy because the A3 was the cheapest sedan which rolled out from the premium German auto manufacturer’s factory and now for those who always wanted to get their hands on an Audi can afford one for themselves or their family. Just few days after the launch of the A3, Audi also announced the S3 which is the more powerful version of the A3 sedan.

The S3 possesses typical sports sedan looks and a powerful engine under the hood; it also has received quite a number of mechanical changes which makes it a completely different car than the standard A3 sedan. Powered by a 2.0 Liter TFSI engine which produces a healthy amount of power and an impressive amount of torque figures this car will also impress those who worries about numbers more than their performance on road. But unlike other tuned cars the S3 is practical enough for daily use and is also capable enough to be driven on a race track. 0-100 km/h comes in just 4.9 seconds while the top speed is restricted to 250 km/ h mark.

Now everything sounds really interesting! right? Wait till you hear this Audi’s rival Mercedes Benz is all set to launch the CLA 45 AMG in the Indian market which is the AMG tuned version of their of their cheapest sedan the CLA Class, so in order to compete with its rival Indian Audi fans can hopefully expect the arrival of the S3 also in our Indian market as soon as Audi launches the A3 in the Indian market. So it’s really a tough competition between these German premium auto giants to capture the top spot, that said let us shift our focus back to the S3 sedan.

Audi A3 Will Derive Its Power From A 3-Pot Engine

Audi A3 Will Derive Its Power From A 3-Pot Engine

Audi has confirmed the A3 sedan for India. It will be the new entry-level Audi after the Q3 and should be priced upwards of INR 20 lakh. Powering the new Audi A3 would be a 2.0-liter diesel and 1.8-liter turbocharged petrol engine. These engines are roughly the same found on the A4, albeit in different states of tune. A manual gearbox would be offered on the Audi A3 and so would an automatic on the more expensive versions.

Audi CEO Rupert Stadler has confirmed a new engine for the A1 and A3. This new three-cylinder engine will be available in Europe and isn’t expected to come to India. The 3-pot engine has been in development for a while now and will soon be offered on European-spec A1 and A3 models. The new engine will be the base or entry-level powerplant followed by the staple TDI and TSI engines on the pricier versions.

“In the A1 and the A3, the three-cylinder will be a standard engine in the future, for sure. It gives a good feeling and plenty of torque. I think for a while, we will stay with the entry-level products – I’m not quite sure if the market in the mid to long run responds to three-cylinder tech. But just look at it 10-15 years ago when six-cylinder was a must and now four-cylinder has taken over”, said Stadler, Audi CEO.

It was a tight battle between the two Germans, but in the end the Audi A3 took the top honors to be named the "World Car of the Year 2014". So, what is so special about the A3 that made the judges vote for it?

First of all, the A3 sedan will be launched in India later this year which means we can discuss about it. The A3 sedan is based on Volkswagen’s MQB architecture and is the cheapest product from the German giant; it features front-wheel drive and won’t use ’Quattro’ which is so synonymous with Audis. Under the bonnet, goes a 1.8-liter turbocharged petrol and 2.0-liter diesel so, a no surprises there. The interior is typically Audi with premium materials laid end to end to make up a plush cabin. I still cannot point out what makes this Audi so special that it won the votes of the judges.

Anyway, the 2014, World Performance Car of the Year was awarded to the Porsche 911 GT3 and its quite surprising to know that the judges weren’t pleased with the new Corvette Stingray or Ferrari Speciale. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class was named the World Luxury Car of the Year, while the BMW i3 took home two awards with it.

Audi S3 launch slated ahead of A3 launch in India

There has been a lot of excitement about the new Audi A3 sedan since the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo where it was first showcased on Indian soil. The A3 is set to be the next entry-level Audi after the Q3 SUV. Now, according to reports, Audi is also planning to launch the performance version of the A3, called the S3 along with the base sedan.

The S3 launch could precede the official launch of the A3 sedan and will be offered at a slightly higher price point. The A3 is the main rival for the Mercedes-Benz CLA Class which is also touted for the Indian market.

The Audi S3 is powered by a 2.0-liter TFSI petrol engine that produces 296 horsepower. The base A3, on the other hand could be offered with a 1.8-liter petrol and and 1.6-liter diesel mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. The sportier S3 will instead get a 6-speed S-Tronic.

Audi’s top-down strategy for the Indian market seems to be paying dividends for the Ingolstadt based automaker. The company has been able to capture a substantial chunk of the market, especially in the premium segment. The Audi A3 sedan will offer customers immaculate quality at a very affordable price. Then, for those who want a bit more, the S3 would be a great option.

Audi A3 Sedan Tops Crash Test In US

Audi A3 Sedan Tops Crash Test In US

Soon to arrive in India, the cheapest sedan from Audi has lately earned the top honor in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the US crash test.

Audi A3 compact sedan was rated as Top Safety Pick+ by the Institute for Highway Safety. Audi A3 after undergoing the test scored ‘good’ in almost all the disciplinary ratings and the sedan also got an ‘advanced’ rating for the ‘Audi pre-sense front’. The pre-sense front technology in Audi helps the driver by letting them know when the safety distance from another car at its front has been shortened, thus minimizing the chances of any accident. Also when there is a dangerous situation, the electronic assistant gives the driver a warning and an automatic emergency brake gets applied when required. This whole process delimits the speed thereby lessening the possible impact, precisely any accident is prevented from happening.

The company must have been enjoying a high time because test as such are not quite easy to pass and not many cars can get over this examination successfully. Joachim Scheef, head of vehicle safety development at Audi AG said, “The Top Safety Pick+ award for the A3 sedan impressively illustrates the importance Audi attaches to the issue of safety.”

Now that Audi A3 has passed the safety test with flying colors, it seems that the compact sedan will arrive in the country anytime soon. This sedan was showcased in February at the Auto Expo, 2014 and the company has planned to launch the baby sedan by this year. The car retains its power from 1.4 and 1.8 TFSI petrol engine and 1.6 and 2.0 TDI diesel engines.

The new Audi A3 sedan bridges the gap between the entry level Audi hatchbacks and the A4 sedan. That said, the car shares its underpinnings with other Volkswagen Group products. Also, there is a rumor that the A3 could borrow the engine from the VW Vento when it arrives at our shores.

This being an Audi, expect improved levels of luxury compared to Volkswagen cars from a similar price range. The A3 sedan would offer an alternative to those looking for a premium sedan that isn’t as large as a Skoda Superb or a Toyota Camry, but sports a premium badge.

It will be complete with all the bells and whistles including Audi MMI, sunroof, bi-xenon headlamps, 4G connectivity and premium audio system among other creature comforts.

2013 Audi A3 sedan

2013 Audi A3 sedan

Hatchbacks are perceived in India to be cheap and economical cars intended to get you from once place to another without any trouble. Automobile analysts would tell you that our market hasn’t matured enough to the extent where we would associate hatchbacks with luxury. There aren’t any hatchbacks in India over 9lakhs but Mercedes with the B-class, BMW with the 1-series and Audi with the A1 have plans to get the ball rolling in the premium hatchback segment. Only time will tell if these cars will be a success. The Audi A3 is another hatch in the premium luxury segment which is sold in Europe but for markets like India and China, Audi has unveiled a sedan version based on the A3. The 3rd generation A3 will be launched internationally in 2013 and there is every chance that we might see that in India. We expect a price of around 20lakhs for this car.

Volkswagen to underpin 4 million cars from one platform

Volkswagen to underpin 4 million cars from one platform

Volkswagen it seems knows no limits. The German automotive giant is predicted will use its MQB platform for 4 million units by 2017. The MBQ platform debuts with the Audi A3 and would be used for nearly half of VW’s annual production. In return the manufacturer hopes it would be able to cut costs and reduce production time.

Platform sharing at such a level is unheard of in the auto industry and this global platform will be used for hatchbacks, sedans, crossovers and SUVs as well. This platform standardizes engine positioning and the manufacturer claims that the width, length and wheelbase can increase or decrease according to model. Though the benefits could be immense, this would be the first time that a manufacturer would be doing platform sharing at such a scale.

The MQB platform would underpin cars for Audi, Volkswagen, Skoda and Seat models and the Audi A3 which will be the first car to use this platform will go on sale in 2013. This car is also expected to come to India in 2013 and when launched would be the cheapest Audi on sale. Volkswagen currently is the world’s second largest automobile maker and aims at becoming the largest.

The MBQ or the ‘Modular Transverse Matrix’ platform is designed to accommodate a wide variety of transverse, front-engined, front-wheel drive models.
