2017 Audi A3
The smallest sedan from Audi has received a facelift and a new petrol engine for the Indian market
One of the main reasons for the popularity of the A3 is because this is still one of the most affordable sedans that you can buy in India from Audi’s stable. The car launched back in 2014 became an instant hit because of its premium build quality, compact size which proved beneficial in City traffic and also its zippy drivetrains.
Now after almost three years since its launch Audi decided to update the popular sedan to keep it fresh until and unless they introduce the new generation model. The A3 takes on the Mercedes-Benz CLA both in the National as well as the International model.
The updated Audi A3 sedan has received subtle cosmetic updates as well mechanical changes under the hood.

If we talk about A3’s overall proportions, then we must mention that Audi has tried to keep their overall design simple and realistic but with the evolving design the German auto manufacturer has decided to add some new updates to their current sedan to make it look in line with their recent design language.
The facelifted car has received its styling inspirations from the new generation A4 sedan; the front profile now gets a restyled face with a large diamond grille which looks similar to some current Audi models. Apart from the new grille, the sedan has also received new sharper looking headlamps which are off course full LED units now. The front bumpers now also have been redesigned with slightly bigger air intakes which have made the front profile look a lot sharper and sportier than before. There are no changes made to the side profile, though, except a new set of 16-inch wheels, there is also a 17-inch wheel available as an option though and slightly bolder shoulder lines. The rear profile, on the other hand, gets slightly tweaked taillamps.
Get inside the new cabin, and you will love what you will see. The facelift compact sedan has received a new set of seat Milano leather seat upholstery. The dashboard has minimal switches on them which have given a clean look. The retractable 7.0 Inch, Multimedia infotainment screen, has a new updated user interface which gets better screen resolution. What you will miss though in the facelift car is the virtual cockpit and also the Android and Autoplay system. The rest of the interior dimensions and space remains identical to the pre-facelift sedan. The dashboard looks clean with round aviation inspired air con vents and new three-spoke Audi TT-inspired steering wheel.
Regarding features, the A3 inevitably gets enough to fulfill anyone’s wish of owning a luxury sedan. The A3 gets:-
- 7.0-inch screen for the MMI infotainment system
- Electronically adjustable front seats
- Rear view camera, proximity sensors at the front and rear
- Wireless phone charging pad under the front armrest
The A3 sedan hasn’t received any mechanical changes in the diesel variant. It still uses the old 2.0 Liter; four cylinders turbocharged diesel unit which puts up about 150 hp of peak power at 5, 000 – 6, 000 rpm and 320 Nm of peak torque in between 1, 750-3, 000 rpm. The engine paired to a six-speed DSG gearbox which sends power directly to the front wheels. Audi claims that although there are no changes in the authority output they have worked on to improve the NVH levels as well on this unit. The car now promises to return impressive fuel efficiency numbers of 20.6 km top a liter which is quite impressive if you want to much some miles with this car. Talk about performance and this diesel unit does not disappoint you at all, the A3 diesel unit can complete the 0-100km/h sprint in about 8.2 seconds while it can touch a top speed of 224 km/h marks.
The petrol engine on the other hand though is a new downsized engine which can also found under the hood of their recently launched A3 Cabriolet convertible. The 1.4 Litre, four cylinder unit now replaces the bigger 1.8 Litre unit and as a result of its downsizing the engine now makes 150 Hp of peak power at 5, 000-6, 000 rpm and around 250 NM of torque in between 1500 – 3500 Rpm. The engine is paired to Audi’s 7-speed dual clutch transmission and return an impressive ARAI certified fuel efficiency figures of 19.2 kmpl.
The impressive fuel efficiency figures were possible because Audi has provided a cylinder on demand technology which shuts down two cylinders when the car runs on low or mid revs and uses all four cylinders during higher revs. However, it lacks the thrill that you used to get from the bigger 1.8 Litre unit though, but still the small engine manages decent performance figures. The car can accelerate from 0-100 km/h mark in about 8.2 seconds while it can reach a claimed top speed of 224 km/h mark.
Now, these are some quick points that I was able to figure out while going through the overall specs table. The 1.4 Litre unit obviously is a smaller engine compared to the outgoing petrol unit but it still manages to produce more power than the bigger 2.0 Liter diesel unit. Now if that does not impress you then here is something more that actually might, the petrol unit also weighs almost 70 kilograms less than the diesel unit, and it also returns an almost same level of fuel efficiency figures as well. Did you get our indication right?

Audi hasn’t officially launched the facelift A3 yet in the Indian market, but you don’t have to wait for too long, though. As far as the pricing is concerned to expect it to be priced slightly higher than the existing car. Expect the facelift Audi A3 to be priced in the range of 30-38 Lakh rupees ex, showroom.
Mercedes-Benz surely won a lot of hearts with their CLA compact sedan. The bold shape and stance surely impress us all. Moreover, it also gets a crazy AMG variant as well. The CLA just its rival has been offered with both diesel and petrol drivetrains, while the petrol gets the 2.0 Litre unit capable of producing about 183 Hp of peak power at 5500 rpm and 300 Nm of torque in between 1200-4000 rpm. The diesel variant, on the other hand, gets the 2.1 Litre, inline four cylinder unit which is capable of producing about 136 Hp of peak power at 3200-4000 rpm and 300 Nm of torque. Both the engines paired to a G-DCT transmission.
Audi has tried hard to make this car as practical as they could, I mean it gets all the amenities that one needs in an entry level premium offering. A downsized but fuel efficient petrol engine alongside the diesel engine and off course a much sharper styling surely does all the trick. But we still feel it somehow lacks the excitement that people looks for in a car of this segment. Take the CLA for example; it somehow manages to catch our attention if we still don’t want to.
However, we still do feel that the aggressive pricing will surely be its success formula and last but not the least those impressive fuel efficiency figures can also do the trick this time.
