We knew that this was coming the R8 has spent almost 7 years of its life on road and with the increasing competition Audi surely needed to introduce the next generation R8 soon. Equipped with all the modern technologies available at this moment, there is no doubt in the fact that the new generation R8 is one popular contender and stays towards the top of the list of sportscars available in the market today. Audi has already launched couple of special edition R8’s in the market and even some track inspired variants of the first generation coupe too and they surely was able to pull the crowd and why not the R8 has almost everything of being called the ‘perfect mid-engine sportscar’.

However as the time was passing the R8 started aging and there was a buzz that that Audi will be unveiling the new generation R8 last year and it will be replacing the current generation car. The German premium car manufacturer will be focusing on using an improved chassis with special attention to weight saving while the engines will be re engineered to produce even more power and torque and at the same time reduce the fuel consumption and also the CO2 level.

Now there were talks that Audi will unveiling the new R8 at the Geneva Auto show which will be held from 3rd March but we can consider ourselves lucky because even before the show Audi already took the wraps of their new generation R8 and also gave us the details of the new car. The second generation R8 is offered with the V10 units which is available in two states of tune and they both come with more power, better acceleration and an impressive fuel economy figures.

The second generation Audi R8 was spotted couple of times being tested on the track which revealed few details of the car already. While Audi few days ago revealed that their new R8 will also feature optional Laser headlamps which will use high intensity laser diodes that produces lots of light energy from a really small component thus it provide almost double lighting range than the standard LED’s while the R8 will be fitted with LED headlight system as standard.

The mid engine R8 surely gets some serious cosmetic upgrades and take a look at it and the new generation car looks flat and wide, the front fascia of the car is where you will find sea of changes. The R8 gets a single frame radiator grille which is wide, flat and completed with the honeycomb grille design as already mentioned above the LED lights come as standard with the new R8 while the owners can also opt for the optional high performance laser spot lights however what you do get as standard are the grid-type signature of the daytime running lights which sits on top of the now flatter and shaper looking headlamps. The four Audi rings sit on top of the bonnet. You won’t notice any huge changes made to the side profile of the car but the muscular lines and the wheel arches surely adds some muscle to the now sharper looking R8 while Audi also claims that this car is now wider than the previous generation R8, the sportscar comes fitted with 19 inch wheels as standard while it also has an option of 20 inch wheels too. The rear the coupe too has received some styling tweaks and it now comes with an electrically extending spoiler while the R8 V10 Plus gets fixed wing made entirely up of CFRP, beside that the tailamps too has been restyled and just like the front the rear too gets the dynamic turn signals.

While talking about other features this new R8 uses a lightweight design body shell with multi material Audi Space frame (ASF) which weighs only about 200 Kilograms. This new body shell uses carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) form the B‑pillars, the central tunnel and the rear wall which actually means that this shell is 15 percent lighter than its predecessor with all this equipped into the new generation R8 it now weighs only about 1,555 kilograms (unladened).

Talking about the changes that separates the Audi R8 V10 Plus from the standard R8 is the carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) fixed rear wing which is available only with this model. There is also a large diffuser which is placed towards the rear profile and which actually also looks compelte with the trapezoidal exhaust pipes. The rear window in particular provides a clear view of the engine positioned just behind the cockpit area.

The interesting thing about the new R8 is the fact that all the controls are now driver oriented, while the newly designed sports seats are not only comfortable but also provides lateral supports which are definitely important because this car is capable of reaching high speed quickly. The new car also provides optional bucket seats.

The R8 also gets a new multifunction steering wheel which gets start/stop system while the other buttons are for performance mode, there is also a rotary wheel for the selection of dry, wet and snow programs lastly it also gets another button for controlling the sports exhaust system. The conventional analogue instrument cluster has been replaced with a new 12.3-inch display which comes with mind blowing graphics and gives the driver options for choosing between different displays modes. They can even customize the digital instrumental cluster according their own needs and requirements and all these can be operated via the multifunctional steering wheel.

Audi also provides to choose from Alcantara/pearl Nappa leather and fine Nappa leather upholstery. The R8 also gets the latest technology which comes through to them in the form of a new infotainment system, while the MMI navigation plus now comes as standard. The occupants can now connect their smartphone or tablet via the system’s integrated Wi-Fi hotspot. While one can also fit an optional 500 watts Bang & Olufsen audio system into the car.

The 5.2 Litre naturally aspirated V10 plus unit is available in two states of tune even in the next generation R8 and the motor has been retuned and it now produces an impressive 540 Hp of peak power and 540 Nm of peak torque at 6500 rpm while the more extreme and top of the line offering the V10 plus produces 610 Hp of peak power and 560 Nm of torque at 6500 rpm and it is also the fastest and powerful series production car that Audi has ever produced. Talking of speed and acceleration the new R8 V10 is able to sprint from 0-100 km/h mark in just 3.5 seconds while the V10 plus does the same in 3.2 seconds while it has a top speed of 330 km/h mark which is absolutely amazing.

The new innovation also includes an additional indirect injection while it also comes equipped with COD (Cylinder on demand) feature and as a result of this innovative features the R8 now consumes an average of 11.8 Litres of fuel per 100 km. while the more powerful R8 V10 plus consumes an average of 12.4 liters per 100 kilometers. The new generation R8 has now an improved fuel efficiency of almost 10 percent compared to the previous generation car and it also comes with the start/stop system. All the engines are mated to a seven-speed S tronic transmission. There is no doubt that the R8 is one hell of a machine which also has tremendous amount of grip and all that credit goes to Audi’s Quattro all wheel drive system.

As already mentioned above Audi decided to introduce the 2016 R8 only in the in the top-end R8 V10 Plus grade.

According to the Audi the R8 is the closest that one can get to motorsport is get behind the steering wheel of the car. It uses extremely lightweight construction and comes with a dynamic chassis and Quattro all wheel drive system. It uses double wishbone made from aluminum construction which actually guides all the 4 wheels.
