Abarth was founded by Carlo Abarth in Bologna, Italy on 31st March 1949. Carlo’s astrological sign, Scorpio was used for the company logo. Abarth started building sports cars like the 204 A and they successfully competed in various racing events.
In 1951, company moved its headquarters to Turin and in 1952, its association with Fiat began. Abarth produced the original 595 and it was based on the original Fiat 500. In 1971 Fiat completely took over Abarth and it became Fiat group’s racing department. In the 1980s, the Italian manufacturer used the Abarth name for performance cars.
On February 2007, Abarth was re-established as an independent unit as the Abarth & C. S.p.a. Currently, Abarth sells the 500 coupe, the 500 convertible, the 595coupe, the 595 covertible, the 695 and the Punto Evo. The Italian tuning company has 10 world records, 133 international records and more than 10,000 track victories to its name.
Fiat has now officially launched the Abarth brand in India and its first offering is the Abarth 595 Competizione which is being brought in as a CBU. It will later be followed by the Abarth Punto Evo.
The Fiat 500, on which the Abarth 595 is based, has retained the look of the classic Fiat 500. The vehicle is a 3-door hatchback. The round headlights and the overall curvy design give the car a cute look. It gets a small bonnet and a sloping tail section. To distinguish the car form regular Fiat 500s, it gets an Abarth wheels and stickering on the side that says “Fiat Abarth 595”. All Fiat badges have been replaced by Abarth badges. The car also gets a new front bumper and new rear diffuser with two twin exhaust pipes. Both the front and rear bumpers have small ait inlets and outlets. The car comes with xenon headlights, fog lamps and rear parking sensors. The Abarth 595 gets lowered suspension and a Monza exhaust system.
The Abarth 595 gets premium high quality interior that combines both the rtro look and the modern look. It gets a dual tone black and red dashboard and red inserts on the doors. The small sporty Abarth steering wheel also has red inserts and it gets paddle shifters. The pedals are finished in metal and the brake pedal has the Abarth logo embossed on it. The front gets sports seats with integrated head rests. Since this is a very compact car, the back seats are best left for children.
The equipment list includes an electric sun roof, Blue & Me hands free system with USB port, a 7 inch TFT colour display instrument cluster, a leather wrapped sporty steering wheel with integrated audio and Bluetooth controls, split rear seats and rear parking sensors.
The Abarth 595 Competizione is powered by a 1.4 litre turbocharged T-JET petrol engine producing 160 HP and a maximum torque of 230 Nm. This amount of torque is available in Sport mode. It is mated to a sequential automated manual transmission (AMT). This power in a small package results in superb performance figures. Power is sent to the front wheels.

SUSPENSION, TYRES AND BRAKES
The Abarth 595 features Copaf front suspension and Koni rear suspension. Both get Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) technology. Stopping power is provided by four piston aluminium fixed brake calipers. The front brakes are self-ventilated 305X28 mm perforated discs whereas the rear brakes are self-ventilated 240X11 mm perforated discs. The Abarth rides on 17 inch alloy wheels. The hatchback also gets Torque Transfer Control (TTC).
The Abarth 595 Competizione will be brought in as a CBU initially. Hence it will be expensive. It is priced at 29.85 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi).
The Mini Cooper S is an iconic 3-door performance oriented compact hatchback from the British marquee. Mini is currently owned by BMW. The car is known for its go-kart like handling and is in its third generation now. The Mini Cooper S is powered by a 2.0 litre, 4 cylinder twin turbocharged engine producing 189 hp and 280 Nm of torque. It is mated to a 6-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. The car accelerates to a 100 kmph from a standstill in just 6.7 seconds. It has a top speed of 233 kmph. The Mini Cooper S costs 34.56 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi).
The Abarth 595 Competitzione is a fun little hatchback that is sure going to thrill all the enthusiasts in the country. It is compact performance car that will take on the likes of the Mini Cooper S and the upcoming Polo GTI. When compared to the Mini it is slightly slower and is down on power but it is cheaper as well. Abarth will later start local production of the performance car at a later stage. That should decrease the price and put it within range for many enthusiasts.

The maximum torque generated is 230 Nm@2750 – 3000 RPM with the top speed estimated to be around 210 kmph. Low ground clearance provides good traction and control for manoeuvring at high speeds with confident driving. The 595 Competizione features large 17 inch alloy wheels to ensure it remains gripped to the road and cut corners with ease. The exterior designing is inspired from the Fiat 500 Cinquecento. The exterior body is made up of steel and it is a forward wheel drive car. The Abarth 595 Competizione comes with the well acclaimed perforated and ventilated brake discs which considerably improves the car’s reactivity while stopping. The advanced aerodynamics provided makes driving the 595 Competizione more easy and interesting.
