Maruti Suzuki Baleno

We start our article with one of the most popular premium hatchbacks of its segment the Baleno. The Baleno hatchback was introduced in October 2015 and since then this hatchback has crossed one lakh sales mark already which itself speaks about its popularity. People really received something different from Maruti after a long time after the Swift hatchback. The small hatchback competes with other premium hatchbacks like the Hyundai Elite i20 and the Honda Jazz.

Under the hood the Baleno hatchback gets the same 1.2 Litre K series petrol unit which produces about 84 Ps of peak power and 115 Nm of torque. This engine is paired to a 5 speed gearbox. There is also a diesel variant as well which is powered by the same 1.3 litre diesel unit as well which produces about 75 ps of peak power and 190 Nm of torque. This engine too is paired to the same 5 speed unit. Although this may be the same engine which powers the Swift hatchback as well but the Baleno uses some lightweight materials in its construction and as a result also weighs less than Swift hatchback which definitely makes it a better performer.

While the top speed is claimed to be 160 kmph the diesel variant promises to return 21 km to a litre of fuel.

There is one more reason to get excited as well because Maruti will also introduce a sportier Baleno RS variant as well which will be powered by a 1.0 Litre Booster jet petrol motor which is expected to produce about 110 Bhp of peak power and around 170 Nm of torque making it an exciting hatchback as well.

FORD FIGO

The new generation Figo hatchback is definitely a winner in every sense and why not it looks good, provides the best in class safety features. But what we are really interested in is the fact that its powertrain. While the base petrol variant is powered by the 1.2 Litre unit which produces about 88 Ps of peak power and 112 Nm of torque, the engine is paired to a 5 speed manual gearbox. The top end variant which we were particularly interested in is powered by the 1.5 Litre unit which produces about 112 Ps of peak power and 136 Nm of torque. This engine is available with both manual as well as automatic transmission as well. This definitely makes this hatchback one of the most powerful hatchbacks of the Indian market available within a budget. Coming to the diesel variant, the 1.5 Litre variant is capable of producing about 100 Ps of peak power and 215 nm of torque. This engine is paired to a 5 speed manual gearbox and promises to return an impressive 25.83 kmpl.

FIAT PUNTO ABARTH

The Punto Abarth is a clever little hatchback which uses the same 1.4 Litre 4 cylinder Turbo jet engine which actually has been taken from the Fiat’s Linea sedan. This 4 cylinder petrol motor is capable of producing an impressive 143 Bhp of peak power and an equally impressive 112 Nm of torque. Now imagine what a hatchback can do with all that power and torque. Although this engine is paired to a 5 speed manual gearbox which has a slightly rubbery effect which hampers the fun slightly. HONDA JAZZ

Honda introduced the new generation Jazz hatchback last year and it was launched with both diesel as well as petrol variant under its hood. The petrol variant gets the same 1.2 Litre petrol unit which is capable of producing about 90 Ps of peak power and 110 Nm of torque. This 4 cylinder unit is paired to a 5 speed manual transmission while there is also an option of an automatic transmission as well. The diesel variant on the other hand is powered by the same 1.5 Litre unit which produces about 100 Ps of peak power and 200 Nm of torque, this engine is paired to a 6 speed manual gearbox. The diesel variant claims to return an impressive 27 kmpl while the petrol variant promises to return a claimed fuel efficiency of 18 kmpl.

Volkswagen Polo GT
