The Suzuki Swift Sport is an attractive performance hatchback which is already on sale in many parts of the world. We can call ourselves little unlucky because Maruti has decided not to launch the sportier variant of the Swift yet because performance hatchbacks were not popular in the Indian market. However, that is all going to change soon, according to the recent reports, there is a huge possibility that Maruti will be introducing the new generation Swift Sport in India keeping in mind the fact that hot hatchbacks are now finding places in the garages of many young Indian customers who want slightly powerful hatchbacks.
We already have many popular performance hatchbacks introduced in India recently by few favourite Auto manufacturers including Fiat and Volkswagen. Even Maruti too launched the Baleno RS which is their iteration of performance hatchback based on the Baleno.
Recently Suzuki has released a teaser video of their soon to be launched new generation Swift Sport hatchback which is based on the current generation Swift that was launched recently in the International markets. The new generation Swift hatchback like we all know will be launched in India towards early 2018 while the Swift based sedan is already available for sale in the Indian market. Suzuki will be showcasing the new Swift Sport at the upcoming 2017 Frankfurt Motor show. Although we are not sure at this moment, there is a high possibility that Suzuki might showcase the new Swift Sport alongside the new generation Swift hatchback at the 2018 Auto Expo.
So now that we have little information about the upcoming 2018 Swift Sport hatchback clicks past jump to read about the performance hatchback.
Suzuki has provided us with only a few glimpses of the performance hatchback yet, but these images are enough to give us an idea that the Swift Sport will be getting a new front apron with more aggressive cuts. The performance hatchback is although based on the same hatchback but it does feature a different grille. Just like the new grille the sportier hatchback also gets a front splitter as well which helps in giving the front profile a much more aggressive and sportier stance. The side profile of the soon to be launched Swift Sport features a newly added side skirt and a slightly larger diamond cut alloy wheels.
The rear profile of the hatchback has not yet been fully revealed, but a small teaser image does show that the hatchback will get a black diffuser and twin exhaust.
A small teaser image of the interior was released by Suzuki which gives us an idea of the change which you can expect inside the cabin. The cabin of the Swift Sport hatchback does get a flat bottomed steering wheel and red dials which will help you differentiate between the standard and sportier variant. The other features which are carried over from the standard hatchback include the new seven-inch touchscreen display which comes integrated with Bluetooth connectivity, plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The instrument cluster also gets an integrated 4.2-inch display embedded in between the two dials.
Its predecessor used a naturally aspirated 1.6-litre petrol motor, but the new generation hatchback will use a slightly smaller but turbocharged 1.4-litre Boosterjet unit. This lower unit is expected to produce around 140 Bhp of peak power which is something to cheer.
The engine not only delivers more power and torque but will also be powering a lighter hatchback. The new-gen Swift Sport underpins the new Heartect platform which has reduced the overall weight of the hatchback to less than 1000 kilograms. Even with the additional body kit expect a slight increase in overall kerb weight. This will not only result in better performance and handling but also an improved overall fuel efficiency.
First of all, we are not yet sure whether Maruti Suzuki has any plans of introducing the hatchback in the Indian market or not and even if they do it will be priced in the range of other hot hatchbacks which is already available in the Indian market by the likes of the Fiat and VW. We can atleast confirm that Suzuki will price this hatch quite aggressively because it hasn’t received plenty of changes except the new engine which will affect the pricing for sure.
With more power available on tap and lower body weight, the Swift Sport inevitably will mean business. If the hatchback manages to retain the same handling like its predecessor even after underpinning an entirely new platform then we are pretty sure there will be plenty of takers for this performance oriented hatchback.
