Almost every other Auto manufacturer has atleast one compact SUV or Crossover in their lineup because of their popularity across the World. Jaguar compared to some of its other rivals entered this competition little late but definitely with a bang with their big sporty Crossover F-Pace last year. Now Jaguar wanted some sales numbers and what else could bring them that except a crossover which collaborate almost all the qualities of their flagship Crossover in a small exciting yet affordable package.

Our spy photographers managed to capture the first testing sessions of the E-Pace Crossover towards early last year with the help of that we can assume that the development of this car began atleast one year before.

So now the question is will the E-Pace be as successful as its big brother the F-Pace? Well, the initial impression of the Crossover picked up lots of positive reviews from across the world. It definitely looks sporty and shares almost the same DNA with its successful brother the F-Pace, the E-Pace based on the modified version of the JLR D8 platform which also underpins the Range Rover Evoque and the Land Rover Discovery 4. Although the Crossover looks compact, it offers plenty of space inside, but the small shape gives it a more sporty appeal. What else is also interesting is also the fact that the E-Pace gets the 2.0 Litre Ingenium diesel and petrol engines which also powers some of the other cars of the JLR family.

So it already has almost all the right formula which is needed to make this product successful, and Jaguar calls this compact SUV “A seriously smart small SUV. Designed and engineered to be beautiful, fun and bright”, but does it live up to its name?
We find out everything that you should know about this new addition which will begin its delivery from early next year and offcourse this will come to the Indian market as well.

Jaguar E-PACE SETS NEW WORLD RECORD EVEN BEFORE ITS LAUNCH

We know Jaguar does something exciting when they introduce their new products; this is called pushing boundaries and limits we saw that in the case of the launch of the new generation XF and also during the launch of the XF Crossover. Jaguar perhaps wanted to demonstrate the sporty quality of the Crossover and by performing a 15.3 metre-long James Bond movie style jump complete with a 270-degree corkscrew-like ‘barrel roll’.

The E-Pace completed the World Record jump at Excel in London where the car was revealed. The stunt was performed by stunt driver Terry Grant who has done numerous tricks and already holds 21 Guinness Records titles to his name. What Jaguar was able to achieve is something truly worth appreciating, they managed to blend sportiness into an SUV which is quite a hard thing because SUV and Sportiness never can go hand in hand.

The E-Pace manages to stand out from the rest with its Sports car inspired design with dynamic qualities engraved in it. Towards the front the E-Pace gets Jaguar’s signature J-Blade LED headlamps and a bold honeycomb mesh grille. The best part of it is the fact that although the E-Pace is a baby brother of the F-Pace, it still tries to look different than the F-Pace.

Towards the side profile, the Crossover has a Coupe like profile and gets a dynamic shaped bonnet and Coupe like roofline which is then followed by an integrated large roof spoiler towards the rear. The spoiler rests on top of a steeply raked rear window. To add more muscle Jaguar has added muscular haunches towards the rear profile which is then well balanced with the sporty front end with the help of the swooping bulge which flows just beneath the C-Pillar all the way towards the rear window. The rear profile also gets integrated twin exhausts which help in giving a performance oriented look to the rear. The rear taillamps truly resemble that of the bigger F-Pace SUV and the F-Type sportscar.

The E-pace looks compact, sporty while the muscular edges and the coupe like roofline adds a distinct shape to this Crossover.

INTERIOR

The sporty theme of the exterior is continued inside the cabin as well. The E-Pace gets driver centric controls, and a sports car inspired grab handle in the centre to bring out the sportier side of the Crossover. At the central console, there is a 10-inch touchscreen which comes integrated with Jaguar’s touch-pro infotainment system while three rotary dialer controls are positioned just below the touchscreen. The E-pace gives you an option of 5 USB ports and connects upto eight devices via wifi hot spot. There is no doubt in the fact that the interior gets finished in all the high quality and premium materials. The leather seats get contrast stitching while the large fixed panoramic sunroof helps in creating light and spacious interior.

Towards the rear, the passengers get ample of space to enjoy the luxury that Jaguar provides for its passengers inside. Believe it or not but the luxurious compact Crossover features an impressive 577 Litres of boot space for the rear passengers which can be extended to 1234 Litres by folding the rear seats. The E-pace also provides plenty of storage options for its occupants inside increasing the overall practicality of the Crossover. The E-pace gets deep storage space in the central console which also gets a phone holder with charging points and removable cup holders.

For the entertainment of the passengers inside the E-pace offers an option to choose between two states of the art Meridian audio system. The 10-inch touchscreen gets integrated with navigation pro which ensures that you never loose your way with the help of route map and navigation system. There is also an optional head up display which projects information’s like GPS route and speed on the windscreen. There is also an optional activity key which is just like a wearable hand band which helps you to lock and unlock your E-pace without the car’s key. There is also an optional gesture control which helps in opening the rear tailgates and is located on either side of the rear bumper.

DRIEVTRAIN AND PERFORMANCE

It’s a Jaguar so it should also drive like a Jaguar that is why the E-pace gets a choice of two Si4 Petrol Ingenium units which promises to deliver around 249 Ps and 365 Nm of torque while the more powerful unit returns about 300 Ps of peak power and 400 Nm of peak torque respectively. Both the petrol engines are turbocharged units which deliver a faster throttle response and eliminates turbo lag. The 249 ps unit helps the E-pace to sprint from 0-100 km/h mark in just 7.0 seconds flat while it has a top speed of 230 km/h mark. The 2.0 Litre 4 cylinder turbocharged diesel unit, on the other hand, is capable of producing about 150 Ps of peak power and 380 Nm of peak torque. The more powerful unit is capable of producing about 180 Ps of peak power and 430 Nm of peak torque. Jaguar also offers the 2.0 Litre diesel unit in a more powerful tune as well, the top of the line diesel unit is capable of producing about 240 ps and 500 Nm of torque.

The entry level 2.0 Litre, 150 Ps diesel unit, is only offered with a front wheel drive system while the rest of the variants get an all wheel drive system and is paired to a nine-speed automatic gearbox. The front wheel drives 150 Ps diesel unit only is offered with a six-speed manual gearbox.

All the engines have been designed to provide an excellent driveability, extreme refinement and impressive fuel efficiency.

RIDE AND HANDLING

Jaguar E-pace features a fully independent suspension system which gets an integral link rear suspension which is also shared with the F-pace Crossover.

Jaguar also offers multiple driving modes with the Jaguar drive control; these models include winter, eco mode, Normal and Dynamic. The dynamic mode helps the driver while he wants to drive the E-pace just like any sportscar. The E-pace also gets an electronic power assisted steering system helps in improving fuel economy without hampering the drivers steering inputs. The Eco-mode of the E-Pace helps in optimising fuel consumption while the winter mode is ideal for wet or snowy condition by making the Jaguar more stable and planted. The all wheel drive system of the E-Pace in wet and snowy conditions switches the torque output continuously in between the front and rear wheels providing the right amount of traction where it is needed.

All these advanced electronics and driver aid help improve handling and the Crossovers stability on the road along with refinement.

DRIVER AID AND SAFETY FEATURES

The car also gets adaptive cruise control while the Q assists help in keeping a suitable distance from the car ahead while in traffic and stopping the vehicle when necessary. The Crossover also gets an emergency braking system. It further also gets blind spot assists system as well. It further also gets driver fatigue detection lane assists system, there is also a 360-degree surround camera system which helps in parking the car.

COMPETITION

The new generation Audi Q3 is one of the biggest competitors of the new E-Pace besides the new BMW X1.

1. Audi Q3 Dynamic Edition
While the Audi Q3 got its much-needed update in 2015, it is available in India with the 2.0 Litre turbocharged diesel unit capable of producing 174 Bhp of peak power and 380 Nm of torque. The engine is paired to the 7-speed automatic transmission which sends power to all the wheels via the Quattro all wheel drive system.

The BMW X1 on the other hand got is update last year and is already available for sale in the Indian market as well. Unfortunately, BMW has decided to launch the new generation X1 with a single diesel engine option for the Indian market. The X1 is available with 2.0 Litre diesel unit capable of producing about 181 Bhp and 380 Nm of peak torque.

PRICING

There are no details of the pricing available yet, however, expect Jaguar to price their newest entrant at par with its rivals the X1 and the Q3 to keep things interesting while the additional options will cost you some extra. However, the good thing is that there will atleast be a four wheel drive variant available in India.

The Jaguar E-Pace with its compact proportions, sporty exterior and interior impresses everyone. The 2.0 Litre turbocharged petrol and diesel engines will also definitely do justice to the compact Crossover while the all wheel drive system further helps in boosting the Crossover tag.

The E-Pace is powerful than some although many will say that it is just a baby Crossover but only time will tell if this compact Crossover will be able to be equally successful as its bigger brother the F-pace.
