If we talk about styling definitely the new generation Swift has changed a lot. It looks more aggressive, the car still carries over the same sporty design. The hatchback retains the same overall silhouette. What has changed though is the way it looks. The new Swift hatchback looks even sportier with the redesigned front headlamps which now get projector units (on the top variant), a completely new single piece grille and a huge fog lamp enclosure towards the lower lip. Like the front profile the side profile of the hatchback gets newly designed alloy wheels. Both the A and B pillars are finished in Black which has actually left a floating roof like illusion similar to the ones found in the new Vitara Brezza SUV. The rear profile of the new Swift looks little slimmer and also gets broader LED taillamps. It also gets a neat looking spoiler interated into the roof which completes the overall styling of the new hatchback.
The new Swift hatchback shares many of its parts with the Baleno hatchback however if we talk about overall dimension then the new hatchback is actually slightly shorter than the Baleno but has a longer wheelbase. The car is also lighter than the previous generation hatchback the lightest Swift hatchback only weighs 890 kilograms thanks to the new platform. This will definitely be useful and will help improve its overall performance.
The interior of the new Swift hatchback definitely looks modern and much more premium than the old hatchback. The all new dashboard gets round air con vents in the center while towards the side there are rectangular in shape. The center of the dashboard gets a completely new touchscreen setup which gets integrated SmartPlay touchscreen with Navigation. The multifunctional flat bottomed steering wheel too looks new. In terms of some other features it gets a cooled glovebox and newly designed seats as well which has been wrapped with new upholstery.
Coming to the drivetrain the Japanese spec Swift hatchback gets 1.2 Litre petrol motor which you will find under the hood of the base variant. This engine is capable of producing of 67 Ps and 118 Nm of torque. The mid variant too is powered by the same engine available in different state of tune, the same engine produces about 70 Ps of peak power and 170 Nm of torque. While the top end variant gets slightly more powerful 1.0 liter, 3 cylinder motor which is capable of producing about 101 Ps of peak power. All the above engines are paired to either a 5 speed manual transmission or a CVT unit.
For the Indian market the Swift hatchback will most probably get the same 1.2 Litre petrol motor which powers the present Swift hatchback while the diesel variant will continue with the same 1.3 Litre motor which will be tuned to deliver slightly more power and torque output. However Maruti might introduce a slightly more powerful diesel unit as well which will replace the ageing 1.3 Litre mill. Some reports also states that the Indian spec Swift hatchback will get an automatic transmission with both diesel and petrol drivetrains this time.
For the safety of the passengers inside the new Japanese spec Swift hatchback gets seven airbags, ABS with EBD, Rear defogger, Reverse parking camera with sensors, ESP and Hill Hold Assist (RSt variant), LED DRLs while there is also an Optional Safety Pack (which comprises of Dual Camera Brake Support, Lane Departure Warning, and speed limiter).
Expect the prices of the new Swift hatchback to start from INR. 5 Lakh onward while the top end variant will most probably be priced around INR. 8 Lakhs.
With a new lightweight and rigid platform, better features, upgraded safety features and premium interior and sporty exterior the new generation Swift hatchback surely will win plenty of heart. However this is only the Japanese spec hatchback which was revealed today. The Indian spec hatchback is expected to be unveiled infront of the Indian audience towards mid 2017.
