The Scorpio is a household name in the Indian car market since the year 2002; the SUV has many accolades to its name including ‘Best car of the year’, ‘Best SUV of the year’ and much more. While the first generation SUV was introduced back in 2002, the second generation was introduced just after four years in 2006. Much later Mahindra decided to up their game and introduced the third-generation SUV back in 2014. Now after almost three years of its production Mahindra has decided to launch the facelift variant of the SUV.

The 2017 Mahindra Scorpio facelift variant will most likely get some exterior and interior updates while there won’t be any significant change under the hood. The SUV was caught testing couple of times already which gives us an idea that it will most probably launch towards the end of 2017.

The Scorpio is one of the first SUV’s which was developed in-house by M&M engineers. M&M engineers also developed the 2.2 Litre mHawk engine which powers some other Mahindra suvs at the same time. While the launch of the new Scorpio facelift is nearing, we are here to provide you all the details of the facelifted SUV available at this moment.

EXTERIOR

1. Mahindra Discontinues Scorpio Automatic Variant

Like we already mentioned above the test mule of the facelifted SUV was spotted a couple of times and from the spy shots of the test mule, it is quite clear that the facelifted SUV will get all the changes mostly towards its front and rear profile.

The front profile of the SUV will feature a restyled bumper which might get some bigger air inlets to make it look premium and slightly more aggressive. Apart from the new bumper expect the facelifted SUV also to get a slightly redesigned grille as well. Many reports are saying that Mahindra might redo the headlamps, but we firmly believe that the daytime running lamps styling won’t change much. Apart from these changes to the front profile, there won’t be any changes made to the side profile of the SUV. However, we do expect it to get a new set of alloy wheels to enhance its exterior styling. Just like the front profile the rear profile of the SUV will also get some styling updates as well which might come in the form of slightly redesigned taillamps and rear bumper.

INTERIOR

Just like the exterior expect the interior also to receive some styling updates as well which might come in the shape of a new seat upholstery and some feature updates which might include:
– New 7.0 inch touchscreen audio system
– Automatic Air Conditioning
– Seven person seating configuration(including a third-row seating option)
– New seat upholstery

DRIVETRAIN

Like we already mentioned earlier the facelift Scorpio won’t be receiving any changes under the hood. The Mahindra Scorpio will continue to be powered by the 2.2 Litre mHawk diesel unit. This is the same unit which also powers the slightly more premium Mahindra XUV500 SUV as well; this engine is capable of producing about 140 Bhp of peak power and 280 Nm of torque. The engine is paired to a 5-speed manual transmission as standard while Mahindra will also introduce a new Automatic transmission as well because they already have discontinued the older unit. The reports online state that Mahindra will introduce a new Aisin sourced 6-speed automatic unit which supposedly will be much smoother and responsive at the same time. Mahindra does offer the Scorpio SUV with both two-wheel as well as four-wheel drive configuration.

Now, there is also a fair chance that Mahindra might also introduce a petrol variant of the Scorpio as well which is still a hush matter even at this moment. Mahindra in collaboration with Ssangyong is working on a petrol engine which might be launched when Mahindra introduces the facelift variant in India.

The soon to be launched Mahindra Scorpio facelift will rival against the likes of the Tata Safari Storme and the Hyundai Creta.

TATA SAFARI STORME

The Tata Safari Storme hasn’t received any major updates recently expect the engine now is available in a different state of tune which generates more slightly more power and torque output. The Safari Storme is powered by a 2.2 Litre VariCOR unit which is capable of producing about 138 Bhp of peak power and 320 Nm of torque. The slightly more powerful variant, on the other hand, has been tuned to produce about 156 Ps of peak power and an impressive 400 Nm of peak torque. While the former is paired with a 5-speed manual unit, the later has been matched to a 6-speed manual gearbox.

HYUNDAI CRETA

The biggest rival of the Scorpio at this moment is the new Creta for sure. The Creta is available with both petrol and diesel engine options under its hood. The diesel variant gets the option of both 1.4 Litre CRDi and 1.6 Litre CRDi unit. The smaller unit is capable of producing about 90 Ps of peak power and 22.4 Nm of torque; the bigger unit provides about 128 Ps of peak power and 26.5 Nm of torque. Both the engines are paired to a six-speed manual while there is also a 6-speed automatic transmission available as well.
