Volvo S90 was first introduced in the Swedish auto maker’s lineup in 1996, as a renamed version of 960 mid size sedan for certain markets. Later, when the Swedish luxury auto maker decided to discontinue the 900 Series, the present day S80 replaced the S90, which has always been one of the top range luxury sedans from the Scandinavian company. Besides being one of the top ranging premium sedans of all time, S90 has been important for being the last rear wheel drive car from Volvo. As we are nearing the end of 2015, Volvo is again set to bring the S90 premium sedan, which is a redesigned and upmarket model.
Apart from replacing the S80, the new S90 will be distinguished with its new fresh design, and all the latest technologies and luxurious comfort on offer. The new generation S90 will be powered by both petrol and diesel engines, while there will be a hybrid powertrain on offer as well. Volvo has already unveiled the car officially, and it will hit the Indian shores in a few months, sometime around mid 2016, or early 2017. It would have been great if Volvo showcased this gorgeous model at the upcoming 2016 New Delhi Auto Expo, but unfortunately the Swedish marquee will skip the biennial event this time.
Before this car hits the Indian market, we brought a detail review of the upcoming car. Check it here.
Update 02/01/2016:- Volvo has recently released a new video of the upcoming S90’s interior and we have updated the review and added the new video. Do check that out

Compare to its predecessor, Volvo S90 definitely looks cool and vehemently stylish with its fresh design language. At the front fascia we see a lot of resemblances with the luxury SUV Volvo XC90. Take the headlamps. Both these cars sport same aggressive new design grille and ‘Thor’s hammer” like LED daytime running lamps in the headlamp clusters. The headlamps blend perfectly to the front fenders, while the front bumper sports a wide intake which runs almost the entire width of the car.
At the side profile, the car looks sleek with the sharply angular ORVMs which sport LED turning lights, the coupe like roofline, the larger rear windows, chrome outline highlighting the green house area, blackened B pillar. The wheel arches look huge, which gives delivers a powerful aura, while the side skirts at the lower area of the doors give it a sporty appearance. The entire side profile doesn’t cherish any character lines, but the car looks elegant, truly displaying its persona. The roof adorns a panoramic sunroof.
The rear profile definitely looks a bit heavy with all the styling jobs done by the Swedish marquee. The C shaped LED tail lights, the sharp and thick creases at the lid, the protruding rear bumper and twin rectangular exhaust vents with chrome tip sitting at the sleek rear diffuser below the registration enclosure. The rear profile of S90 bears resemblances with the S80. Dimensionally, the new S90 is longer and wider than the S80, which makes it look upscale from exterior.

The upcoming Volvo S90’s interior definitely looks premium and futuristic. The S90 just like the recently launched Volvo XC90 SUV gets minimal buttons on the driver’s cockpit area; the buttons have been replaced by a huge tablet like infotainment screen positioned in the middle of the dashboard which actually helps the driver to operate almost every function inside the cabin. The top end S90 will also get audio speakers from Bowers and Wilkins. The three spoke multifunction steering wheel too has been wrapped in leather and can be used to operate rest of controls and even to scroll menus for the infotainment system.
There is even a rotary drive selector which helps the driver to choose from different drive modes. The rest of the cabin as you all can watch in this video and images gets a high end premium leather seats, there is also a matte-finish wood trim which runs across the dashboard as well. In the center console there is some storage space as well just behind the car’s shifter. The rest of the buttons including the start/stop buttons gets metal finish to it. The cabin looks more spacious and upmarket with the use of light color.
The S90 is longer and wider than the S80, and the wheelbase is larger as well, it is expected to be much more spacious inside the cabin than the S80 luxury sedan.
Well, it may surprise many that the S90 luxury sedan gets power from the same powertrain that is available under the hood of XC90 SUV; but seeing the exterior and interior similarities I didn’t get surprised. The XC90 is said to be the cleanest and most powerful SUV. Drawing inspiration from the SUV S90 is also expected to take the same route. It is not known, what Volvo will offer in India under the hood of the S90, but in international market this luxury sedan comes powered by 2.0 litre 4 cylinder petrol and diesel units. In India too we expect S90 will get power from these supercharged or turbocharged power.
There is a T8 hybrid powertrain too, albeit we don’t know whether this unit will be available in India or not. The transmission job in this car is done by either a 6 speed manual or a 8 speed automatic gearbox.
