We are very much conscious about Volkswagen Beetle; those little bugs like vehicles have an irreplaceable and undeniable charm indeed. Although the German iconic car has a permanent place in every automobile enthusiast’s heart, but it is not sure why the MINI cars, which are substantially close to the Beetle’s, could not gain the permanent place in the petrol head’s heart.

Well, without going deeper we can assume Beetle has a long history and it was first produced as the first “people’s car” of the world. On the other hand, MINI vehicles have always delivered an elegant charm and aura which is not very close to the “people’s car” theory.

Coming back to India, BMW has made quite a profit in the country. But their subsidiary MINI couldn’t make it upto the mark. Only a few people of the country, mostly from the elegant class, use this car and that too, in a very small number. Getting Amitabh Bachchan as their prized customer MINI couldn’t afford a good share of Indian automobile market pie.

Convertibles bring us the charm and aura from the long gone era, when driving on street was so much pleasure, streets were not crowded. But as time evolved, convertibles also took a new face. MINI Cooper S Convertible come in the same way. The drop top version from the British iconic car manufacturer was unveiled a few days ago, just before the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show. There is no news yet about the car launching in India. But as we have heard, this car may arrive in India sometime next year. Therefore we tried to bring our readers a detailed review of 2016 MINI Cooper S Convertible.

The exterior of the MINI Cooper was restyled earlier in recent times. In 2014 the hardtop MINI Cooper went through major redesigning. Although the Cooper we are talking about is a drop top version of the hardtop one, but it comes with similar design language. Although the differences don’t actually come very much notable.

The front facade looks classy with extensive usage of chrome elements on the headlamps cluster, front grille section. The swept back headlamps comes in form of iconic round shaped units. These bi-xenon headlamps come with chrome surrounding which highlight the cluster. The front radiator grille comes with thick chrome bar highlighting the section and three thick chrome bars. The front bumper also looks stylish with the lower grille section coming with chrome treatment. A horizontal chrome strip runs the width of the lower grille section.

At the side profile MINI gave this car a crossover type look, which comes in form of a thick black body cladding running around at the lower part of the entire body shell. Under the cladding adorned wheel arches the 8 spoke wheels look distinctive. The dark door sills can be seen, which not only make the car stylish looking, but also improve the aerodynamics and make the appealing from side view point. The side scuttles come with orange side indicators, and the door handles come body coloured. The car comes with a stylish soft top which can be removed to give this car an all new stylish look. Well, who wouldn’t want to feel the gushing breeze in a sunny day drive?

The rear profile too comes quite stylish in the MINI Cooper S Convertible. The indicator comes positioned centrally in the tail light cluster, while the brake illuminates above and below the rear light. The tail lamps come surrounded by a chrome ring. The registration enclosure comes highlighted by the chrome finished rear handle bar. The interior of the MINI Cooper S Convertible comes equally stylish, but it doesn’t actually look like a four occupant seating comfortable interior. It is more of a 2 person seating car. The front panel comes with a stylish dashboard, and three spoke steering wheels which boast a few control buttons mounted on it. The dashboard is the most attractive section of this car, as it comes with big round dials and gauges at the drivers information panel. While the centre console boasts an unique round shaped large touchscreen infotainment panel. It is very much obvious, that we are accustomed with a rectangular shaped touch screen panels, while the MINI Cooper S Convertible comes with a round shaped one. The head rests come round shaped, which is also something unique inside the cabin.

Although it’s a soft top vehicle, but the cabin comes with a sunroof option which enables the roof to be open midway for just letting the sunrays inside. The surround and door ring complements each other and we can see plenty of chrome usage inside the car also. The interior and upholstery come with lots of leather and premium quality clothing options.

The MINI Cooper S Convertible comes with powered by a 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine, which comes mated to a 6 speed automatic gear box. It generates 192 PS peak power and 280 Nm. It reaches 0-100 kmph in 7.1 seconds with top speed of 233 kmph.

When MINI Cooper S Convertible arrives in Indian market, it will face competition from some of the already existing cars in the market. Here they are.

We already have a convertible in India in form of Audi A3 Cabriolet. Although, that’s not exactly super cute looking MINI type. But the car definitely talks about volume and sheer elegance. Priced at INR. 44.75 lakhs this car can be a tough competitor against MINI Cooper Convertible, if we consider the established brand name of Audi in India.

Fiat Abarth Competizione came in India with lots of hype. This car certainly looks uber cool. Although it is not a drop top vehicle, but it has every potential to give the MINI Cooper Convertible run for money. The sport focused look and performance of the car is an advantage for Fiat Abarth Competizione.

MINI Cooper S Convertible is certainly one of the most exiting looking stylish and cool compact car in the world. As Indian market is very much price sensitive, we have a doubt about it’s future in the country. But it is no surprise that the young generation of the country is opting toward buying innovative designed cars. MINI Cooper S Convertible certainly has everything to attract them.
