Jeep launched the 2015 Renegade with all the bells and whistles in the market. The Renegade looks smart and well-proportioned. But it is bit disappointing to find out that the new baby Jeep is actually missing the strong muscular lines that should define a character of a SUV or are too subtle to notice from this one. It looks puny and somehow gets the attention with the large front grille. The diminishing size of Jeep Renegade does take away notice from every part of street.
But let’s not be mistaken by the small size, the Jeep Renegade surely comes armed for the serious off-road enthusiasts. The base model is a two-wheel drive model, more of an ego-massager. The top-of the line Trailhawk has all the teeth in it to put any off-road vehicle to shame. It comes equipped with four-cylinder engine options and pairs up with nine-speed automatic transmission, the one similar to the Jeep Cherokee.

The Renegade design is made keeping the city and off-road in mind. The versatile size of the Renegade adds maneuverability in both city traffic and off the tarmac conditions. With Jeep Renegade, Jeep marks its entry into the compact segment. The all-new 2015 Renegade is inspired by the powerful Jeep Wrangler with new styling and rugged body. Jeep Renegade is so well made that it provides the best-in-class approach and departure angles purposely built which provide the best stance to the onlookers.
From inside, the Jeep Renegade is provides an energetic persona with precisely crafted details and high-quality materials. The beautiful colors and smartly designed storage space inside the vehicle enables the Renegade to use the available space for optimum space management.
With the title ‘Tek-Tonic’, the Renegade form distinctive language. Major visible areas are made of soft-touch materials to give a premium feeling while the inserts are made up of heavier material borrowed directly from its elder sibling, the Wrangler. The “X” shape inspired by the roof and the tail lamps can be seen on the interiors too, providing an image of Tek-Tonic to true sense. Jeep has also mounted unique and protective clamp fasteners with anodized design accent to provide a feeling of extreme sports.
The Renegade has really flexible interiors with removable, reversible and height-adjustable cargo floor panel and fold-forward front passenger seat.
The Renegade comes with two choices of engines: a turbocharged 1.4 liter that churns out maximum of 160 horsepower, a naturally aspirated 2.4 liter engine with 184 horsepower. The smaller engine comes with a six-speed manual transmission while the bigger one is mated with the nine-speed automatic transmission.
The base model comes with 2WD option only while the higher models feature an advanced 4X4 with state-of-art equipments. Jeep will also offer the all-new Renegade to the global markets with a combination of 16 powertrains, which will be customized according to the market it will go to for which will include its performance and fuel efficiency.
RIDE AND HANDLING
The Jeep Renegade is dubbed as the most capable off-road car in its segment. But not all its variants are equally armed, the base model for instance only offers a 2WD system but the higher models are much more capable and can take on any upheaval with confidence.
The Renegade features the all new 4X4 system which also comes fitted with Jeep Cherokee. Through this advanced set-up, 100 percent power and torque from the engine can be directed to any of the four wheels for optimum grip during the most hostile situation. The two advanced systems that come with the Renegade are Jeep Active Drive and Jeep Active Drive Low.
The Jeep Active Drive is a full-time 4X4 system while the Active Drive Low provides full-time 4X4 with a crawl ratio of 20:1, which can take out the Renegade even from the most treacherous conditions. The top-of-the-line Trailhawk model gets the Jeep Drive Low as standard feature along with other systems like Select-Terrain system with an option to choose Rock mode. The height of the vehicle can also be raised upto 20mm. The top-trim rides on 17-inch all-terrain tires and has an approach angle of 30.5 degree with 25.7 degree breakover angle and 34.3 degree departure angle. The car also gets Hill-descent control and can operate upto 480mm of water.
The all-new Jeep Renegade is loaded with safety and security features. Jeep announced that the new SUV carries as many as 70 safety and security features.
To start with, the really useful features like the Forward Collision Warning-Plus, which uses radar to detect the objects in front and give driver warnings along with LaneSense Departure Warning-Plus, which announces when the driver changes lanes haphazardly can come really handy during city and highway conditions.
The Jeep Renegade also comes equipped with many other active and passive safety systems.There is Blind-spot detection monitoring, Rear Cross Path detection, ParkView rear backup camera with dynamic grids, electronic stability control along with electronic roll mitigation to control the roll-overs and 7-airbags as standard to make sure that the occupants are as safe as technology can keep them.
In international market, the price will start somewhere around INR 11 lakh but that figure will swell when the car comes to the Indian shores. Jeep has already furnished plans to enter the Indian market, and the Renegade will the perfect ammunition to enter market like India.
As it will come as a completely built unit (CBU) for the time being, the starting price tag can be somewhere around Rs. 20 lakh in the Indian market.
The Q3 might be in luxury segment is more of a soft-roader; it will be one of the main competitors for the Jeep Renegade. The Q3 was launched in Indian market in 2012 and did good numbers since then. It is powered by a 2.0 liter TSFI and 2.0 liter TDI engine with a power output of 211 horsepower and 174 horsepower respectively.
Mini Cooper Countryman also falls in the same price range and will prove to be tough competition for the Jeep branded Renegade. Countryman is a timeless iconic car and recently got updated with new features. It carries 1.6 liter engine tuned in three different power options, with John Cooper works tuned version producing the maximum power of 211 horsepower.
Jeep’s entry into the compact SUV segment with the Renegade opens a lot of markets for the American brand. Upcoming markets like India have been a hotspot for such products and if Jeep can push their product with the right price in the market, it will be a kick-start for the company’s operation in the country. The Renegade is well-equipped and with best of both city and off-road abilities, Jeep will be able to attract the attention of larger amount of buyers and will be able to enter the mass segment.
