A small hatchback from the auto giant Maruti Suzuki is always welcomed with open heart in India.

The new hatch has been christened as Celerio and is built and developed on a completely new platform and posses the looks and features to attract even the choosiest person. Maruti Celerio will replace the A-Star and the Estilo which are already present in the Indian market for quite some time now. We have already informed you about the different variants that are offered with this new hatch and also the list of equipments that will be available with them.

The Celerio is powered by a new 3 cylinder engine codenamed which has a displacement of 998 cc and will generate an impressive amount of power and torque about which we will talk about a bit later in this review. It also features a new type of transmission which is also something new and has been installed in a budget car for the very first time here in India.

So without wasting any more time let us get straight into the details of this new hatch which will be launched here in the first week of February 2014.

The styling of this hatch will definitely not force you to leave your unfinished coffee and jump out of your seats but what makes the Celerio a bit special is the fact that this is a hatchback launched from the stable of the small car specialist Maruti Suzuki after a gap of 2 long years.

Coming to its styling the front grille looks a little different from other Maruti Suzuki hatches which also have given this car a new face and character it also does carries the shiny Suzuki logo in the middle, the headlamps styling looks stylish though. What will you attract your attention is its lower front bumper of the Celerio which has an aggressive styling and it also holds the fog lamps and that pretty much wraps everything about its front.

If you walk towards the side of this hatch you can’t miss the distinctive character lines that run parallel to each other which add a sporty quotient to the hatch. The manufacturer has fitted the base variant with a 13 inch rims while the other variants are offered with 14 inch rims, there is also an alloy wheel option available with the top end variant. The base LXi and the ZXi variant won’t be getting a body colored mirrors but the ZXi variant will get an electrically adjustable body colored ORVMs.

As far as the rear is concerned the tail lamps definitely looks similar with other Maruti hatches except the rear bumper which still was able to give the Celerio its own unique identity.

The Celerio definitely looks attractive than other Maruti Suzuki hatches of its segment but we can only call it an evolution in design theory but not a revolution.

Now we are coming to the most important part of any hatch which is its interior specially keeping the Indian masses perspective in mind.

The Celerio hatch promises to offer a spacious interior and like every other Maruti products the interior too has been finished with top notch quality materials. The front seats come with integrated headrests which looks much more comfortable than its predecessor. The steering wheel on the top variant will come fitted with audio mounted controls, the two tone dashboard looks quite neat and tidy and the round air cons looks stylish too.

Maruti Suzuki has tried their best to fit all the essential equipments in the new hatch and the top ZXi variant comes loaded with many new and interesting features such as height adjustable driver’s seat, audio player with CD, USB, aux-in and Bluetooth compatibility, keyless entry, electrically adjustable outside mirrors, audio controls, tilt steering, driver seat belt warning light and rear window demister and many more.

Coming to the rear seats the Celerio hatch definitely is a spacious car and from its exterior styling it is quite clear that this it also has impressive headroom. The rear seats too look spacious but a third person at the rear has always been a bit of a squeeze. Although the rear has a descent boot space of 235 litres if that is not enough then there is also a 60:40 rear split seats.

At present the Celerio will only be available with a Petrol engine which has a displacement of 998 cc and will generate about 67 bhp of maximum power at 6000rpm and 90 Nm of torque at 3500rpm. The front wheel drive vehicle will be mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox and now comes the most interesting feature about the Celerio it will also have an option of an automated manual gearbox.

The updated Petrol engine is named as K10B, Maruti has tried their level best to lower the NVH level of the engine but the entire 3 cylinder engine has a common problem which is when you push them hard there is always odd noises from the engine and the engine feels strained.

Now comes the tricky part Maruti Suzuki has decided to equip the new car with a transmission which eliminates the use of clutch while shifting but this is not exactly an automatic transmission which are available with premium vehicles. Maruti is calling it the EZ drive which is exactly a combination of manual and automatic transmission and there is also a M mode in which you can change the gear manually. This gearbox is less expensive and also will provide a feel of driving an automatic transmission vehicle which is quite interesting actually but this type of transmission is only available with the LXi and the VXi variant others will be offered with a 5 speed manual gearbox which is lighter than the present gearbox which are available with the Alto or the Wagon R.

The manufacturer also claimed that their new hatch Celerio is capable of returning 23.1 Km to a liter of fuel.

Like all the other hatches the Celerio too has been fitted with a McPherson strut with coil spring at its front and coupled torsion beam axle with coil spring at its rear. The suspension setup as you all already know is quite capable of handling uneven roads with ease.

The Celerio has been fitted with ventilated discs at its front and drums at its rear, the overall lightweight of the vehicle along with the power steering helps in keeping the car under control.


Ford Figo

The Figo is a worthy competitor to the Celerio what keeps it ahead is the fact that it also has an option for diesel engine. Ford Figo after it received its facelift in 2012 looks even more stylish and also has many new types of equipment installed in its interior so one can definitely keep it as an option.

Hyundai i10

The i10 may not be as spacious as the Celerio inside and also offers few equipments inside but it is definitely a fun car to drive and if you can extend your budget you might also gets your hand on the new Grand i10 which is packed with lots of interesting features and an impressive engine.
