Honda launched its first compact sedan in India on April 11th called Amaze. There was lot of hype surrounding this small entry level sedan from Honda, because this is the only Diesel saloon that rolled out of the Honda stable in India. The Amaze is based on one of the successful hatchback of Honda in India called Brio. Honda managed to keep the length of the vehicle under sub 4 meter, but still the amount of cabin space provided inside is impressive, and because of its size (sub 4 meter) Honda was able to rip the benefits of excise taxes, and as a result the prices of the new Amaze is really Amazing.

The Amaze is available in both Diesel and Petrol variants. The new Honda Amaze is powered by a 4 Cylinder, SOHC i-VTEC 1198 cc Petrol engine which generates 88 Ps of maximum power at 6000 RPM and 109 NM of torque at 4500 RPM, whereas the Diesel unit is powered by a 4 Cylinder, DOHC i-DTEC engine which generates an amazing 100 PS of maximum power at 3600 RPM and 200 NM of torque at 1750 RPM. The engines has been mated with a 5 speed manual gearbox, but there is also an option of 5 speed automatic gearbox which has been offered by Honda for its Petrol variant.The interesting fact about this Diesel engine is that it offers great fuel economy and also is the most powerful amongst its class. Design and interiors

The new Honda Amaze looks almost like the hatchback Brio from the front, but the car looks totally new if we take a look at the rear of the sedan. The amazing thing about this vehicle is that it does not look like that the rear portion has somehow been adjusted on the hatchback Brio, the car is beautifully proportioned and the extended rear boot blends perfectly with the whole body giving it its own unique identity. The changes that you will notice in the front are the two chrome plated slabs which leans upwards and also has the Honda logo engraved in the middle along with the body colored front bumpers which also looks new and makes the car look big and tall at the front, it also has the Brio’s teardrop headlamps cluster with integrated side turn indicators in the front. The side profile of the Amaze will also attract the attention of many, the bold looking stripes that runs from the front to the rear of the vehicle gives it an upmarket appeal. The rear of the car looks proportionate too, though the tail lamps might seem like they have been inspired from the Honda City, like many other sedans here in the Indian market there is a chrome plate at the rear just above the number plate area which enhances the overall appeal of the rear, the rear bumper also looks beefy and thus gives an overall stylish and sporty look to the rear.

In brief the Honda Amaze looks compact yet spacious it also has many common features like the body colored door handles and the rear view mirror with side turn indicators. Now coming to the interior of the new Amaze, the first thing that you will notice inside the vehicle is that the interior is quite spacious and the big windows makes the interior airy. The dashboard has been taken directly from the hatchback Brio , the instrument cluster consists of the analogue speedometer and tachometer with Amber glow back lit display, along with a digital fuel gauge. The dashboard also houses the audio system but it comes without a CD player, there is also a manual air condition controls at the bottom half of the dashboard, the three spoke steering wheel with the Honda badge in the middle also comes with audio mounted controls. Now coming to the seating position and the seats, the front seats are fairly comfortable and spacious with enough underthigh support, it also has beige upholstery which looks attractive and upmarket, but the fixed headrests of the front seats might cause a bit of a problem during long journeys. Due to the longer wheelbase the rear seats also does not feel clumsy and has plenty of leg room and under thigh support in comparison to the other cars of its class, there is space for 2 adults at the rear, however there is some usable amount of room also for the third person at the rear seat. It is really amazing that Honda was able to extract so much room inside the cabin in its sub 4 meter compact sedan. There are some other features inside the cabin which surely will attract attention like the 7 bottle holders and the quality of plastics. There is also an option of power windows and automatically retractable rear view mirror in the high end variant of the Amaze along with an option of alloy wheels

Overall the interior of the Amaze is comfortable and looks upmarket and there is enough room for 4 adults inside the cabin too. The beige interiors also looks classy and stylish. There is also a 400 litre boot at the rear which can store some good amount of luggage for weekend getaways. The things that might disappoint is the dashboard which has been directly lifted from the Brio hatchback and the amount of engine noise that seeps inside the cabin.

Engine and performance

As mentioned above the Honda Amaze is launched with both the diesel and Petrol variant and the engine has been mated with a 5 speed manual gearbox, however there is also an option of an automatic gearbox for the petrol engine which is the same unit from the Brio hatchback. The Petrol engine is much more responsive than the Diesel engine but the Diesel engine has been introduced for the first time by Honda motors and Honda claims that the new Diesel engine will returns an amazing fuel economy of 25.8 km to a litre. The Diesel engine too is quite responsive but the when pushed hard there is some fair bit of noise which seeps inside the cabin which is disappointing. Unlike other Diesel engines the Amaze ‘Earth Dreams’ Diesel engine is has enough power once one puts the pressure on the accelerator. The engine performs well both in city and highways. However the Petrol engine may feel bit underpowered and lacks the mid range power and this lack of power really effects the driving while overtaking in the highways. But at the end of the day the Petrol engine won’t disappoint you because the car is lighter in comparison to the Diesel engine and thus has a perfect power to weight ratio.

Overall both the engines are quite responsive and Amaze is fun to drive in city and open roads. The Diesel engine also returns a good fuel economy and thus will definitely attract more crowd.

Ride and handling

The Honda Amaze uses Independent, MacPherson struts at the front and non-independent, torsion beam axle suspension setup at the rear, the suspension setup is efficient enough to handle Indian potholes with ease. The compact sedan feels planted and rock solid even in the highways, it also has a small turning radius of 4.5 metres which comes in handy in congested city traffics. The power assisted steering is also responsive and helps in easy handling of this compact sedan. The Honda Amaze has been fitted with disc at the front and drum brakes at the rear which is quite efficient in bringing this compact sedan to a halt. Last but not the least the Honda Amaze uses 175/65R14 inch tyres which also provides enough grip on the tarmac. Overall the handling and ride quality of the new Honda Amaze is amazing and the above all the impressive handling genes of the Honda is present in their new product also.

The Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire is the toughest competitors of the new Honda Amaze and is powered by a 1.2-litre K-Series petrol engine which produces 85PS of maximum power at 6000rpm and max torque of 113Nm at 4600rpm and a 1.3-litre FIAT sourced diesel engine which produces 75PS of maximum power at 4000rpm and 190Nm of torque at 2000rpm. The quality of plastic and interior is quite impressive but the Amaze offers more interior space than the Swift Dzire. The Diesel engine of the Honda Amaze also generates more power than the Swift Dzire and also returns better fuel economy than its competitor.

The Amaze is an exciting product that Honda launched here in India, the new entry level compact sedan has more space than one can expect in a sub 4 meter saloon of this size. The quality of the interior is impressive and the Amaze provides good comfort at the rear seats. The quality of the ride and handling is also impressive and Honda claims that the Diesel engine will return a mileage of about 25.8 kmpl which is highest in its class. Though there are some flaws in the new Amaze too, there is some amount of engine noise and vibration that seeps inside the cabin when the car is pushed hard.
